maniac Posted October 13, 2016 Posted October 13, 2016 (edited) Kohli is doing mostly all the right things as a captain so far...like backing fast bowlers....5 bowler theory overseas etc......but needs to break the chains of status quo and needs to give more fresh and new talent a shot whenever possible. That is one aspect of his captaincy that needs improvement. I know IPL is not the best example but even there I haven't seen him trying new or experimental things like Delhi have tried out.....Yes RCB had bad bowling resources but did not see him try anything new or experimenting there either......With RCB it was always the Top 4-5 that won them games. Going back to Gambhir or playing a tired Shami too makes me kind of skeptical. On field he has pretty much got everything spot on with bowling changes and field placements....leagues ahead of Dhoni in that regards. To be fair to Dhoni,he has faced injuries to main players or loss of form of core players quiet a few times and that is where he failed to either motivate or get the right replacements....Kohli has definitely had a smooth sailing so far in that regards. On field stuff has been top class but selections, eye for talent and rotation of talent needs to be seen which are also important for a good leader. Edited October 13, 2016 by maniac

For me the crucial addition is Kohli the player when Kohli the captain plays. Meaning, Kohli the captain gets Kohli the player when he captains as additional benefit, unlike Dhoni who had to make do with Dhoni the wicket keeper and Dhoni the lower order bat, or bordering on tailender towards the end of his career at least overseas most often than not. The same equation worked for dhoni is ODI's because he is a substantial batsman in it. maniac and sscomp32 2
Laaloo Posted October 13, 2016 Posted October 13, 2016 The one thing I will criticize about Kohli is that sometimes he is too quick to make changes. He gets a bit agitated and starts making all those changes. I'm not asking him to be passive like Dhoni but sometimes making too many changes is not a good thing. tweaker, maniac, New guy and 1 other 4
Texan Posted October 13, 2016 Posted October 13, 2016 I can already see this thread becoming legendary The biggest problem I had with Dhoni was his inflexible, sometimes brainless approach. The guy benched Bhuvi in seaming conditions in New Zealand. Serious brain fart there. Then, he kept playing the same batsmen who were failing in Aus when he had Rahane and Rohit sitting on the bench 4 Test losses in a row. Made Rahane wait for 21 Tests before handing him his Test debut, almost ruining his career. As we can see now, Rahane turned out to be a fabulous Test player. All these gaffes and added to them his negative attitude even at the start of a Test away from home really made his captaincy a big liability for the last 3-4 years. tweaker 1

But I disagree with those who are saying he is a better captain than Dhoni. According to me, captaincy requires cool-head. Virat is a great, aggressive player. He cannot plan with patience which Dhoni can do. Meh being cool on the field is just one small aspect of captaincy. No doubt Dhoni was street smart who used his instinct on the field (eg giving last over to Joginder) but what separates great captains from good is that great captains are focused on long term growth. They don't just think of, let me use X, Y or Z because they are best in this situation. They think - if I give A bowling instead of X, we might take few more overs to win but in the long run A will be confident and when we go overseas, he will be a great asset The best Aussie team did not just win the game on the field. They had developed players for years, they had great strategy and proactive attacking options. They won 90% of the match before even stepping in the field. Street smart captaincy and instinct in over-rated, particularly in the longer format like tests. Pulling rabbits out of hats (like hitting six last over, defending with street smart captaincy when 6 runs are needed of last over, making bowler bowl six bouncers or on the leg with leg side field) make for great spectacle but great teams never leave it to that late. They win clinically with strategy instead of depending on cool last minute decisions to turn games. Kohli's team is currently decimating the opposition instead of waiting for captain's one amazing strategy to change the game Edited October 13, 2016 by New guy kruiser, express bowling, putrevus and 3 others 6

If there was a crappy player selected in the 15, Dhoni would make a point to play him in the XI as if to show the selectors - this is what you have given me. At the same time, he would not give deserving players a chance because it "might affect the confidence of the player being dropped". New guy and tweaker 2
putrevus Posted October 13, 2016 Posted October 13, 2016 Dhoni was talking about seniors being a liability in the field so he never had Sachin, Sehwag and Gambhir play together and he contrived to remove them from the team. The same Dhoni never wants to quit T20s even though he has been a liability forever.Dhoni is famous for snatching defeats from jaws of victory in T20s on many occasions with his batting in T20s. It is high time Dhoni relinquishes captaincy in all formats and quits T20s. Kohli should be leading the team in all formats. tweaker and New guy 2

sandeep Posted October 13, 2016 Posted October 13, 2016 Banjo fanboys strike again. You don't have to trash the previous captain and push him down to bring the current captain up. Dhoni had his limitations as test captain. I'm sure we'll see Kohli's limitations at some point. But he's made some good moves, some dumb ones, and shown a willingness to correct himself. Good for him. For the love of phucking Indian cricket, enough with the bashing and counter-bashing and this bullshit. This kachra only serves to bring the forum quality down. But when people are genuinely concerned about Dhoni overstaying you do? Even now some people are bragging about how Dhoni got rid of seniors There is no love of Indian cricket here, just blind Dhoni devotion by some Edited October 13, 2016 by New guy GoldenSun and Rasgulla 1 1
