PTI Phot At 3.03 AM, the driver of the Indore-Patna Express witnessed “the overhead equipment shaking” and “felt a jerk” — both out of the ordinary occurrences — and applied emergency brakes, show official Railways records of worst train accident in recent years that killed at least 121 people and injured over a hundred. Fourteen coaches of the Indore-Patna Express had derailed at Pukhrayan in Kanpur Dehat district of Uttar Pradesh early Sunday morning. Indore Patna Express Tragedy: Death Toll Crosses 100, Over 150 Injured Sources in the Railway ministry said the Commissioner of Railway Safety, Eastern, P K Acharya, who is probing the accident will look into the possibility of a fracture in the tracks as a possible cause of the accident, which led to the coaches to not only go off the track but also in such a way that several of them piled up against each other causing maximum casualty. Minister of State for Railways Manoj Sinha, who visited the accident spot, too told reporters that a fracture in the rails is suspected to have caused the accident. “Action will be taken against those responsible,” Sinha said. A little after 3 am, when most passengers were fast asleep, the Patna-bound train jumped the tracks. Four sleeper coaches, all overcrowded, bore the brunt of the accident, trapping several people. Of the four sleeper coaches, the S1 and S2 coaches telescoped into each other and most of the casualties are feared to have been in these two compartments. S3 and S4 coaches also suffered severe damage while an AC III tier coach was also affected but casualties in it were not heavy. Official communication records accessed by The Indian Express show that driver Jalat Sharma and chief loco inspector PD Yadav told railway officers that the train was running at 110 km per hour when the accident happened. They told the officers that there was no problem during the run, except around the time that it was crossing the Pukhraya section, some 60 km from Kanpur city. While the engine was safe after he felt the “jerk” and the overhead rumbling, driver Sharma noticed that behind the loco, 14 coaches lay piled over each other. According to Sharma and Yadav’s account, the emergency brake was applied at kilometer 1,290. It was only after crossing almost six overhead equipment (OHE) masts that the train came to a complete halt — ample time for the 14 coaches to derail and ram against each other. “…at km number 1290/6, applied emergency train stop at km number 1290/12, loco and load checked found loco safe. 14 coaches from engine derailed…heavy casualty,” says one of the communication messages. Derailment is the cause of 50 per cent of all accidents in the Indian Railways. This accident happened at a time when Railways, at the behest of minister Suresh Prabhu, was in the middle of a yearlong drive to achieve its “zero accident mission”. The accident has also brought into question the money spent on asset maintenance, including track renewal. “The focus of railway ministry has changed from operation to cosmetics. This is derailment of an entire railway organisation, not a train,” said Dinesh Trivedi, former Railway Minister and Chairman of the Standing Committee on Railways. The accident coincided with a three-day “brainstorming” seminar, Rail Vikas Shivir in Surajkund, Haryana. One of the topics of discussion was how to effect “zero accident”. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who arrived at the shivir in the concluding session held about eight hours after the accident, announced a compensation of Rs 2 lakh to the next of kin of the dead and other ex-gratia packages. Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu, who went to the accident site late Sunday afternoon, also announced a Rs 3.5 lakh compensation to the family of the dead along with other smaller amounts for the injured. Could also be that people steal part of the tracks and sell them off to scrap metal dealers. Most of these are well organized rackets. Hope the government comes down very harshly on this. If that is the case, I hope everyone, from station master to the policemen, One who picked and sold to one who bought, all caught and punished Punishment ranging from from suspension/dissmissal to time in prison.

It has been really windy and cold here and even though we haven't had first snow, there was lot of frost which prompted the aircrafts to delay and get de-iced. Feel sorry for him. Worst nightmare for any person away from their family members sitting overseas. Laaloo 1
