Jayant or Jadeja

Fielding - R. Jadeja proven Indian top fielder. J.Yadav good but less than R.Jadeja at the moment (fielding wise)

Bowling - R. Jadeja has proven wickets in many Tests, JY good but not yet proven (not his fault that he only debuted now).

Batting - R. Jadeja 3 300's but absolute bullshit batting. JY FAR BETTER

Jayant will now play as an alrounder after his showing with the bat, should be batting at 7. He has showed more compact technique than Ashwin and other top order batsmen. I doubt we will be playing with 6 batsmen in this series. At least in India, from now on, we will be playing with this combination. Jaddu has not delivered with the bat. A 6th batsman might come only if it is a raging turner, but right we do not have any reliable 6th  batsman too.

RA has multiple test centuries and fifties!! Let JY score couple centuries in Test vs WI before we say that

Jayant batting definitely shows he can play after Ashwin , even above Saha. Saha is all at sea with pace bowling. Jayant has a v good defense and on one case the on-drive looked like a top order batsman's.  Impressive find. Good replacement for Mishraji the peda-wallah!

What kind of logic is this?

Rkt said Jayant looks a more compact batsman than Ashwin, not that he is already a better test batsman.

If Karun Nair makes his debut and is impressive with his compact game, do people have to wait for him to score 5 centuries before saying Nair looks a more organised batsman than a Dhawan or a Rohit or anybody else ??

Jadeja to me is a lucky cricketer n has become a good side act n support to Ashwin, he cannot bat or turn the ball, we need to develop a good legalinner n will change the dynamics of the game, K Yadav, Gopal both can bat, Jayant Yadav purely as a spinner not good enough for me but looks better then Jadeja.

India need to find a good leggie or a spinner who can turn big n that will help at home n away as well, Jayant, Jadeja kinda bowlers are useless away and only play as supporting bowlers at home.

P Rasool is a decent spinner who gives it a rip with a Swann like action also a good bat, Iqbal Abdullah has been performing ing well for ages n also a bat n left armer, Shabbat Nadeem is another one, haven't seen Quadri and Chahal is not bad at all but cannot bat, Chahal to me is far better then Mishra

Jayant's biggest pluses as a batsman are  that he watches the ball carefully and goes to the line of the ball to play it.

He did this against both the seamers and spinners...against pitched up deliveries and against short balls.

He can be groomed to be a No. 6  batsman even.

Vijay, Rahul, Pujara, Kohli, Rahane, Ashwin, Saha and Shami forming the core test team in all conditions.

Pandya or Jayant...depending on the pitch...as the batting all-rounder / 5th bowler.

Replacing  Jadeja with Ishant  outside Asia.

Umesh or Bhuvi depending on whether there is swing in the air or not.

Trying to bring a wrist spinner in the mix in place of  Jadeja on flat tracks.

what has JY having more compact technique than Ashwin to do with Ashwin's runs. Akash Chopra and Sanjay Manjeraker had better and more compact technique than Sehwag and Laxman and even Ganguly. Technique lone does not mean runs, you also need temperament and a decent range of strokes to be successful.

jayant because he gives more respect to batting and also does the same job as jadeja

jadeja isnt exactly herath, he is not an attacking wicket taking bowler... so we wont miss much

what i cannot understand is how low a price jadeja puts on his wicket

as an allrounder, you would expect him to bat a little more carefully and cement his place in the side like moeen ali did (high quality bits and pieces player)

but jadeja bats so carelessly... he is like a talented shami or umesh yadav... nothing more

Why do you say JY has a more compact technique? And do you mean only against particular bowlers (spin or pace) and on a particular type of pitch? And what does compact technique even mean - is it bat and pad together? If yes, then most batsmen are actually shifting away from it after advent of DRS. Now, most batsmen have their bat in front or keep their pads slightly out of line to avoid being LBW.

On this pitch JY could smother the spin but on bouncier pitches, the same technique will result in catches to FSL against spinners. Then, Ashwin's technique will suddenly seem better. So, in terms of technique, there is no real parameter to determine who should bat ahead. In fact, JY's technique seemed very similar to how Saha batted against the Kiwis. Bowlers will figure out different lengths and areas to bowl to him. Need at least 10-12 innings to properly judge his technique.

rkt - he "defended balls" so you are saying "compact technique" since he played cautiously.

Ash has better technique (at this point) than JY. Maybe in future that can change, but at this point, Ash has better technique.

A few things noticeable about Jayant while batting are

-- he watches the ball all the time. Something very basic but most batter don't  do it all the time, especially while leaving bouncers.

-- he goes to the line of the ball while playing and does not play away from the body.

-- goes to the pitch of the ball while playing spinners on the front foot
