What is the problem with Sanjay Manjrekar?

His blind admiration for that bottle topper Imran   took off some of the respect I had for this man.But that incident  where he immediately approached Sachin  before Sachin could fully recover from  his despair of that 194* declartaion in PAK and informing that the  declaration was

right for the good of the team  made me lose all respect for this bitter man.

Yes Bhogle was better than these 2, but is that really saying much?  Bhogle's shtick had gotten quite thakela.  We need fresh voices and good insights.  We need an Indian Nasser Hussain.  Heck even an Indian Nick Knight would be an upgrade.

People might hate Sanjay Manjrekar for his commentary or views but no way you can call him a failure as a cricketer....the guy may have not lived up to the expectations or hype he had when he came on the scene but still has a pretty accomplished career.

 

A 200 against Imran,Wasim,Waqar...a 100 in WI against Ambrose,Walsh...a ODI 100 at a 100+ S/R in those days against Donald and co...and some good cameos in the WC.....pretty decent cricketing career.

Heard Ajay Jadeja a few times and he was the main Indian commentator during the West Indies tour, thought he was pretty good. Then there are guys like Atul Wassan etc whom Star can also look into to get some new voice.

 

Won't even mind listening to Ayaz Menon.

Its not that his career is horrible.  His pessimistic phattu mindset as a player that infects his commentating is the problem.  Manju is the standard bearer for cricketers of that era who didn't have the self-belief and tended to wilt at the first sign of trouble in pressure situations - particularly in ODI cricket.  But forget that - let's even call that subjective analysis.  The problem with Manju is his scared eunuch commentary.  Never fails to fail to take a stand on any issue, howsoever trivial.  And as soon as Team India hits a bit of trouble in the game, he reverts to doom and gloom.  And at other times, its back to inane BS devoid of any interesting analysis or insight.

Indians are just not good speakers in English. We produce good writers, but where are the speakers? I'm not just talking about cricket, but in general. Even if you look at news anchors or tv show hosts....who do you consider a good speaker?  Many are fully comfortable with English, and do not make ant grammatical or speling errors....but that doesn't itself translate to becoming a good speaker.

 

If you go to debates, people sound like Gautam Bhimani. Artificial and unnatural.

 

On TV you have the Barkha Dutts and Arnab Goswami. Even if they are good (or not) at their job, it's not because of their brilliant oratory skills.

 

And then you have intellectuals like Shashi Tharoor. Perhaps the closest thing to a good speaker in India, but really, his style is too academic for my liking. Better suited to interviews.

That's a fallacy.  Plenty of people in 1.3 billion who can speak eloquently.  and can do so on cricket.  Problem is that commentators in India exclusively come from former players.  That's quite a narrow pool to pick from.   Name recognition trumps quality.

Sunil Gavaskar is probably one of the best analysts in India...if you look through some of the forced crap he spouts,the guy is a cricket bible.

 

Now coming to Hussain-Apart from his accent which seems to mesmerize people on ICF and other desis-there is nothign extraordinary-I really don't see that big of a difference between his and Sanjay Manjrekar's analysis. Manju is a little bit more negative thats pretty much it.

Not sure if serious. Nasser and Manju on par?

 

Hussain is constantly calling the action before the event has taken place. Don't recall Manjrekar ever doing this. 

 

Plus you only need to read Ravi Ashwin's tweets re Nasser. When one of the most knowledgeable cricketers is giving lavish praise to a commentar, you know he is good.

Comparing Hussain and Manjrekar? Also accents might be your thing mate, but don't think that everyone judges a commentator like you. Naseer is the best Cricket analyst right now. Even Manjrekar and Ashwin tweeted the same.
