Modern Day Rivalries..

Kohli/Williamson/Root/Smith

Three out of four of them are captains and all four of them started playing Tests around 2010/11. All four of them are still around 27 and therefore rivalries will go on for at least next 5-7 years. Smith has upper hand in test matches while Kohli is dominating limited overs stats. Kane Williamson unfortunately plays in NZ which is not known for huge scores... but still has remarkable numbers.

These are roughly the stats at the end of 2016 and it'll be interesting to update stats from year after year.

Kohli legitimately doesn't like Smith it seems. I'm sure there is a little bit of that the other way around as well, but that is the only one that seems like a rivalry to me. Root/Williamson vs Kohli doesn't have the animosity.

I guess Stokes vs Samuels  and Jimmy vs Jadeja maybe some as well.

Kohli far ahead from everyone in ODI''s and t20 and doubt anyone will ever catch up with him in those formats.

Similarly, Smith is far ahead in Test for now but his career is still young and his average is bound to drop just like that of Hussey whose average dropped too as his career continued and even Sachin's or any other great player for that matter. It will be interesting to see how much it drops to in next 2-3 years and I think others like Root and Williamson will catch him.  Kohli will surpass them all.

Steve Smith averaging 10 more than the currently accepted world's best batsman Kohli.

Kohli had starting trouble :)  Beyond a point Kohli turned into a beast.

Remember similar rivalry being built in 90s about 4 young batsmen with Sachin Lara Inzamam and Mark Waugh.

Only for Sachin and Lara to go to another level make the comparison stuff meaningless .Can see both Kohli and Smith doing the same.

As good as Root and Williamson are, they aren't at the level of Kohli and Smith imo

Sachin Lara Mark waugh i remember, Inzy was more about how much time he had to score and how comically he got run out or got Akram run out etc.

Kohli is the best but 2017 is a big year for as far as tests is concerned.Smith has become beast in tests he is walking in every test and scoring hundred like walk in park it does not matter where and what pitch. He has scored 100s everywhere.Averaging 60 after 50 tests is just legendary.
