Kohli's indirect message to Raina

"At the end of the day it's up to the individual after that, how well prepared he is or how eagerly he is waiting for the opportunity. From the management and the selectors' point of view, they can only do so much in showing faith and getting a guy into the squad and it's up to the individual. It's about striking the right balance and hopefully he does get back into his groove because I feel he certainly has a lot to offer for Indian cricket, especially in the shorter formats and he can start with this series onwards, there's no problem with that."

A polite way of saying "It's time you got fit and performed"?

Good, Raina's been getting too fat. Get fit or GTFO. I still like him though.

He should say the same to Bumrah and Ashwin

Bumrah agree .......but apart from the exterior which is clearly rotund, there is nothing wrong with Ashwin's fitness...has shown the capability to play long innings in tests...bowl marathon spells and also a safe catcher....may be not the best option in the outfield as he is not the most naturally athletic...but he seems to be fit.

Ashwin's lack of an athletic body just comes down to what he's been given by nature. No amount of gym work and eating well will mKe him look like an athlete. But by all indications, he works hard in the gym and has a disciplined diet. Cant say the same about Raina. He used to be fit, and then seemed to have indulged in the riches a little too much. No excuse for him.

By fitness it is not about just batting but by showing how you dd in the field.

Ashwin hardly support any bowlers when he is on field in the ODI's, while other young players field their heart out whne Ashwin is bowling.  Ashwin is no better than Mishra in that regard when it comes to diving and saving runs. Mishra at least tries with his gol gappa Tond, Ashwin dives when the ball has gone past him or sometimes does not even do that.

That is what is also important part of fitness.

What are you talking about...so far not one coach, captain or team mate has commented about Ashwin's work-ethic....He is one of the hardest working cricketer in the team. His effort or lack of thereof has never ever been an issue....diving after the ball passes...remind you of someone else? yes that is right our very own coach Kumble.

And Kumble was cited by Wright,Chappell etc as being the most hardworking and disciplined cricketer in the Indian side even above Sachin,Rahul etc.

Sometimes it is what it is.

Also Ashwin is excellent in slips and a safe catcher...not everyone can be a outfielder.

Wait are you advocating that one of our biggest MVP's in test cricket to be replaced :omg:

Yeah, Ashwin isn't fat, but he can definitely work on his fitness in the field. A lot of baseball players, particularly Short-Stops, do a lot of lateral agility training to improve their fielding range. I think Ashwin should work on that.

He is definitely a hard worker. During the last WT20 he mentioned how he was doing strength training with Kohli and Dhawan, so he's not lazy. However, I think he doesn't need the extra strength, but would be better served working on his fielding.

They can't comment on his work ethic as he is a match winner for India in test cricket who has a genuine weakness when it comes to fielding in short format.

You do not talk about someone's weakness and bring them down. So they are right in not commenting on that and just move on and give other people some chance to play in the 20 overs.

Ok now some agenda is creeping up......Ashwin is known to have one of the best work ethics in the Indian team....he is not lazy...sure he may not be the most athletic bloke out there.

WT20 Ashwin 4 wickets at an average of 28.00...Jadeja 4 wickets at an average of 34.00.....He was the best bowler in the crucial tie against Bangladesh where we just scraped through.

ICC Worldcup 2015 13 wickets at 25.00 Jadeja 9 wickets at 40.00..Ashwin again the best bowler in the Semis and the crucial Pak game and South Africa

WT20 2014 Ashwin 11 wickets at 23.00,Mishra 10 wickets at 25.00,Jadeja 5 wickets at 28.00

Tell me why again Ashwin doesn't deserve a spot?

Because Mishra is a better twenty20 bowler than Ashwin.

And this is based on what...IPL?

Yes Mishra has stellar T20I stats but has been known to bottle it in important games...sure he deserves a shot and a place but to ask him to replace her No.1 strike bowler and big match player is crazy.

In a crucuial match against Pak,SA or Aus I would be more assured with Ashwin than Jadeja leave alone Mishra.

If you are saying Ashwin deserves a rest ahead of the important Aus series where Mishra can be tried sure I agree with you,but based on the way you are wording it I am not getting that vibe

I know there are some rare exceptions who perform well in all 3 formats like Kohli, but generally players will be good/exceptional in only one or two formats. That’s why it is important to identify which players have been doing well in which format for debuting them.

Shouldn’t mix formats much because one can be good for tests but if debuts in T20s may fail and then forgotten about. So in this case it is good that Pant is debuting in T20s but even if he doesn’t do too well it should’t affect his chance of getting into test team because in Ranjis he has been expectional. Similarly someone like Vijay Shankar who is good for longer format and has average numbers in shorter formats should be tried in A tour and then tests and should not be got into the shorter format teams for debuting.

So getting into shorter formats and then to tests should not be the norm.

I dont know what you mean by given by nature, i will let you explain that.

But he is basically a thair sadham (curd rice). He must have had a careless teen age with just veggies and rice, its the diet that many tam brams have, if he eats well and works out he should be able to get fit and muscular. I think its down to the individual, may be he thinks its not needed, but when his bowling form dips these things will flare up.
