sandeep
Pandya the new binny. Dhawan left out for Mukund. Very "Safe" selections. Understandable given the turmoil with BCCI. Still disappointing though. And no Shami? Link to comment
Forever Indian
Not much of a surprise in terms of selection. So, safe to assume Dhawan's unflattering test career is over? TheWall, tweaker and sscomp32 3 Link to comment

kruiser
16 players -- WTF! Selectors just passing the baton to Captain and coach. There should not be more than 12 for a match being played in India. Make it 13 if you want to account for spinning vs fast pitches, but thats it! It should be the selectors and not team management deciding whom to play. putrevus and tweaker 2 Link to comment

Don't see anything wrong in it.... Edited January 31, 2017 by Mosher express bowling 1 Link to comment

Absolutely nothing wrong with that. Unless you don't trust your Captain and coach - in which case, they shouldn't be Captain and Coach in the first place. sscomp32, express bowling, Mosher and 2 others 5 Link to comment
coffee_rules
http://www.espncricinfo.com/india-v-bangladesh-2016-17/content/story/1080340.html Tamil Nadu opener Abhinav Mukund has been recalled to India's squad for the one-off Test against Bangladesh beginning on February 9 in Hyderabad. Squad Virat Kohli, M Vijay, KL Rahul, Cheteshwar Pujara, Ajinkya Rahane, Karun Nair, Wriddhiman Saha, R Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Jayant Yadav, Umesh Yadav, Ishant Sharma, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Amit Mishra, Abhinav Mukund, Hardik Pandya I haven't followed Mukund this year, but does he deserve a call-up over other openers like Shreyas Iyer . In all probability, he will not be in the playing 11 anyway. So, the selection is a moot point. Link to comment

kruiser
yes, I know that is how it has been in India and I dont like it. It used to be 14 people squad earlier, then the selectors started with 15 and now 16! why not give the entire 200 player pool and let the captain and coach choose who they want? I call this spineless selection - or in corporate terminology a pathetic CYA. Sorry if this is not the common opinion, but thats what I think. Link to comment
vishalvirsingh
I have my doubts about Mukund...never found him to be a stroke player. for me kl Rahul and Murli Vijay should be backed and Shikhar should still be the third opener as he is a stroke player and when in form - he is worth gold. Murli can play 1.5 days to hit a Century...where as shikhar will score a double century if he plays for 1.5 days. I m in no way supporting dhwan but I wanna say if I have both dhawan and Vijay in full form - I will pick dhawan. KL Rahul is definitely a long term talent and should be backed fully now. Vijay has a very selfish way to BAT in tests.. some times he is slower than Pujara too..which could mean a win is converted into a DRAW. Good Batting teams have some defensive batsman who can bat OUT time and SAVE tests and they love Vijay like batsman in opposing teams who score slow and do not take away the Match out of their hands..even if they stay for the entire 1 session.. they score 30 runs sandeep 1 Link to comment
Unleashed
He's gonna sit on the bench anyway. 16 man squad for a one match seems excessive. kosingh 1 Link to comment

express bowling
Resting Shami for the test against Bangladesh is a good idea..... but is he fit ? I would like to know that. Saha in place of Parthiv is the right decision and on expected lines Replacing Dhawan with Mukund is a bold and forward thinking step. No new fast bowler or new spinner tried in such a series ? Conservative selection as usual on the bowlers' front. Edited January 31, 2017 by express bowling Mosher and tweaker 2 Link to comment
BeautifulGame
Really should have tried a young pacer in the XI.We know how average Ishant and Yadav are and how conditions oriented Bhuvi is.Need to find new seamers before the next batch of overseas tours . If we can't try them against Bangladesh then there is zero chance of trying them against Australia . This conservative selections are going to boomerang badly in SA tour. What's wrong with the current system? Are you claiming that the judgement of the captain and coach is not in the best interests of the team? And that you'd rather trust the likes of Diana Eduljee, Sarandeep Singh instead of VK and Kumble? beetle 1 Link to comment
renjith
Seems like team management does not want any experimentation. Considering that its a good selection. 2 good back to back selections. One for the practice match and this one. Link to comment
express bowling
17 minutes ago, sarchasm said: but putting in a more responsive system. For that we would need better quality selectors who are appointed by a specialist panel of experts after interviewing multiple candidates.... like the national team coach is. Currently, the system of picking selectors does not come across as merit based and the selectors are not necessarily the best ones available for the job. I am not sure whether most selectors have a clear idea of what kind of players succeed in international cricket. When Dravid, Ganguly, Laxman, Zaheer ..... basically thinking cricketers who have played at the top level.....choose players in interviews then most picks come across as logical and of the " right kind ". Not the same case with selection panels over the years. Players picked / backed by Kumble and Kohli and suggested by A-team coach Dravid, have a much better chance of being more suited to international cricket.
