“More than postmortem, it is important to recognize talent here. It is important for every team to move forward. I believe that the kind of batting that the likes of Cheteshwar Pujara, Rahane and Rahul have done in this series, they are 10 times better cricketers. Kohli needs to bring the best out of his players. It is a big responsibility of a captain to take the players along as you move ahead.

“If the captain puts his arms around a player’s shoulder and says that he wants the player to win him games, the performance will automatically improve. That atmosphere needs to be there. Identification of talent is very important,” he told India TV.

“Selectors must see who are the players who make runs outside the sub-continent. They should give those players an opportunity in India. It shouldn’t be the other way round. All the big stars of Indian cricket have made runs outside the sub-continent. And if you see, a player like KL Rahul has hit centuries in both Australia and England. So, he should be given an opportunity. Yes, there should be pressure, but it shouldn’t be so much that the player breaks down. The selectors have to show this balance,” he explained.

“Rahul batted really well. There was pressure on him and I am surprised that it took him so long to score runs as he is a quality player. Broad troubled him in this series, but I am happy with his showing because I feel there is a place for him in this team as an opener. You can say that it was a little late in the day, but it can definitely act as a motivation for the youngster.

“Cannot blame any individual as such, but as an opener it is important to score runs in overseas conditions. If the opener gives you a good start, the ball gets older when the middle-order comes in to bat. Since Dhawan hasn’t done well, India might need to look at another opener outside the sub-continent,” he said.

Ganguly also said that the trio of Ajinkya Rahane, Rahul and Rishabh Pant played fearless cricket on Tuesday and that was good to see. “Sometimes when your back is against the wall, you need to come out and play positively. And that is exactly what Rahul, Pant and Ajinkya Rahane did, they played fearless cricket. This is a good sign, even though you can say that the performance has come very late in the series. But you must applaud the efforts of the trio,” he said.

Why rahane.. he is crap.. why are the former players backing rahane...do they see in rahane their own personas in last hurrah. Rahane is done. Time to move on..

If you want to give chances for rahane why not for karun nair. I want to know how karun is inferior to rahane.. he is younger, has a better average, can score fast, can bowl and most importantly  belt spinners.

I agree.. backing talent means to give them a go for 5-7 test matches and giving them the full tools to succeed ..not keep dragging them when they keep making the same mistakes again and again and coaches are clueless or imcompetent to help them get it fixed.

IF after a decent run, they do not learn and keep getting exposed such as Rahane to off-spinner or lapses in concentration,Shikhar Dhawan to outside off-stump  and same with Pandya , then we should do what England did with Moeen Ali ..sentd him in domestics with specfic feedback on what to improve upon and take them once they fi that issue .

England dropped Malan after one game when he kept repeating the same way of getting out as it was in previous series. Same with Ben Duckett to off-spinner in 2016 series. WINNING GAMES NEED TO BE PRIORITY RATHER THAN THIS "PROCESS" /"ATTITUDE" BALONEY WHICH DHONI AND NOW KOHLI KEEP ON GIVING EXCUSES FOR

It is not the job of Kohli to identify talent. It is for selctors to do that.

A selectors finds talent and give it to captain

Its captain who marks hi players and back them more then others , it what captains in past have done

Kohli has backed wrong horses till now and that to not properly .

Kohli also has to mark his players and back them to core. Selectors will give him a pool but he has to decide these are the player who are my match winners n ill back them no matter what. Thats what ganguly did and he has been talking about this for long

HAd ganguly been the captain now he wud have backed - Rahul, pant, pandya, ashwin, rahane to a core and wud have developed deaf years to what world wud have said. HE speaks highly of them. Captain has a huge role in when a key player is down

It is the job of selectors to idwentify talent and tell Kohli what the playing 11 should be. he has too much power.

Kohli's job is to groom talent. These selectors are ok because for every Dhoni,Parthiv,Rayudu,DK type selections they have pretty much given a shot to a lot  of youngsters as well.

Pandya bros,Pant,Vihari,Nair,Kul-cha,Siraj,Chahar,Kaul,Shankar,Sundar etc etc

Kohli's job is to handle them well and give them confidence and so far the team management has not done a good job. The only guy who has a proper backing is H.Pandya.

Baba surprised that Ganguly didn’t mention that how in his time xyz was done

Now they are not doing things done in his time.

its the job of a leader to marshal his troops. be the quarter back be the captain -> its in job description. The point is Ganguly feels Kohli can do more from where he sees it. may be he is right.

tactical problem. captain sets fields decides who bowls when , discusses and agrees on field tactics -> he basically owns the chess pieces - selectors decide who are fit to be good chess pieces. So cricket captain gets a major say in the playing 11.
