Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar showered praises on spinner Kuldeep Yadav and said he’s capable of creating an impact on Australian pitches. Kuldeep wasn’t effective in the first innings of the Rajkot Test against the Windies, but in the second innings, he led the charge with the ball. The left-arm chinaman spinner bagged the important wickets of Kieran Powell, Shai Hope and Roston Chase along his way to a maiden five-wicket haul in Test cricket, finishing with figures of 5/57.

Kuldeep was instrumental in India’s rout over the Windies, who were humiliated by the hosts in Rajkot. India registered their biggest ever Test victory, winning the match by an innings and 272 runs. Their previous biggest win was in fact in their last home Test against Afghanistan, where they defeated the newcomers by an innings and 262 runs.

Kuldeep has got guts: Gavaskar

Sunil Gavaskar believes Kuldeep’s approach in Test match cricket will carry him a long way, especially with several important series up ahead. “The way Kuldeep recovered after the first innings, the way he adjusted his length, the way he went round the wicket, shows that he is a thinking bowler. About the fact that he has got guts, he has got a big heart to take punishment, there has never been a second opinion about that,” he was quoted as saying in India Today.

“He has always been a gutsy bowler because wrist spinners, will always bowl the odd full-toss, the odd short-pitched delivery and they will get punished but to come back after that and to keep persisting is what makes him a bit different than a lot of other bowlers,” Gavaskar added.

He also emphasised on the fact that Kuldeep’s guile and trajectory could possibly make him the most potent amongst the Indian spinners on Australia’s pitches.

“On the Australian pitches, where the bowl bounces a lot more and there is turn for the wrist spinners as we have seen with Shane Warne, the Indian selection committee will think very seriously. If not for the first Test because the square boundaries at Adelaide are little bit short and he might get a little punished over there but other grounds, where the square boundaries aren’t that short, he certainly has to come in the frame for a place in the XI,” Gavaskar said.

India will travel to Australia to play three T20Is, four Tests and three ODIs from November 21 to January 18.

Only 2 spinners should be taken to Aus. Probably Jaddu and Kuldeep.

Traditionally offies struggle big time in Aus. Only Lyon has decent figures there in the last 30 years. And Ash doesn't seem to be in good rhythm either.

Jadeja is at least very consistent. Kuldeep's leggies/googlies might be useful.

Also, all Ind/Aus seamers are righties except Starc. Whatever rough develops, Kuldeep/Jaddu have some chance of using it esp. against left hand batsmen which Aus have quite a few. Ash wouldn't be able to.

Our batting is weak.  That means the team would like some form of batting options till No.8.   We have seen this in both SA and England.

Plus 3 specialist fast bowlers are needed in Australia.

Given this backdrop, how would we include Kuldeep in the playing 11  ?   His bowling has not been of such quality in this test to risk weakening the batting or reduce a fast bowler to include him.

Ash hasn't been dependable recently either in bowling or batting. He's been impatient and a little irresponsible. Looks unfit too. If he is at his best, then yeah absolutely should be #8 and the lone spinner.

Pant-Pandya-Ash-Bhuvi at #6 to #9 is a good lower middle order, subject to form and nature of the pitch.

I'm looking at Jaddu/Kuldeep only because I've kind of lost trust in Ash a bit.

PS: 5 batsmen + 1 WK + 3 pacers is absolute must. Last 2 spots based on form, pitch, balance, desired combination etc.

Spinners have not enjoyed success in Australia. But advantage with Kuldeep is that he can beat both edges of bat. Also he is a Chinaman and apart from Brad Hogg, Aussies are not used to playing Chinaman bowlers in nets or domestics. Fawad , Zampa, Green, Agar, Lyon are totally different to Kuldeep.

I would like to see him bowl in first test and at SCG too.

I too am not that enthusiastic about Ashwin.  He has lost his form with the bat and I don't know whether he has fitness to bowl using his whole body, which would be required on the not so responsive Australian pitches.

Jadeja is my preferred pick as the lone spinner allrounder.  He is in good batting form and is likely to be as good or as bad as Ashwin with the ball ...  but is fully fit and a good fielder.

Don't think the Australian pitches would allow Bhuvi to be played as a specialist pacer  (  which would have been possible in England and was possible in 2 tests in S.A.  )    Most likely case would be one of Pandya or Bhuvi as the pacer all-rounder.

Most likely composition would be

6. Pant

7. Spinner allrounder  ( Jadeja or Ash )

8. Pacer allrounder ( Pandya or Bhuvi )

9. Specialist pacer  (  Shami or Siraj  )

10. Specialist pacer  (  Ishant )

11. Specialist pacer  (  Bumrah )

Only way to include Kuldeep would be to use Bhuvi as the pacer all-rounder and replace a specialist pacer with Kuldeep.  And that would be pitch dependent.

Carrying only Jadeja and Kuldeep may not be bad, as you said earlier.
