They are considered to be the incarnates of goddess's children and thus are respected and cared for. Karni Ma has a huge following in the Western Rajasthan. She's our clan goddess. Just an unfortunate showpiece for the west to brick bat India showing how India lacks hygiene etc and its difficult to fix, fits well into their story. Bhai those rats have been there since hundreds of years and are associated with the legends of Ma Karni. Yeah the hygiene stuff bugs me as well but overall the things have improved greatly over the years. Also what's even more amazing is that there has been no recorded outbreak of a disease despite there being thousands (literally) of huge rats crammed in one small space. But i dont want to hurt religious sentiments so will leave it here, or we could care less about what others say and go our way thats what is happening now. There was a picture i saw of people celebrating chat Pooja in Delhi. This lady is standing knee deep in filthy yamuna, sipping that water while performing Pooja right next to some sewge flowing in.
