  1. 1. Should Shami play over Pandya?

    • Yes. We need a proper 5th bowler.

    • No. Pandya is very valuable as a finisher and in the field.

Yes Pandya needs a longer rope just based on his hitting ability.Get Shami in

Ropes can be reserved for bilateral series not a ICC Final against Pak..

Pandya's role is to possibly bowl 10 overs and be a wicket taker -   If he cannot take a wicket and goes for 8 RPO and only ends up bowling 5-6 overs - that's a wasted spot

Despite risking down votes from the Dhoni cult...I don't trust Dhoni,Jadeja or a hit and miss Yuvi in the slog overs...even Jadhav has been untested.

Pandya even if he gets 10(3) Afridi type innings I am ok...Ashwin isn't setting the world alight with his bowling and Pakistani are better against spin compared to anyone who can bowl at 135+

The poll options are limited. Either of Yuvi or Jadhav can be replaced by Shami

On a given day, some bowlers will do well, some of them will go for runs. The captain has to see who is bowling well on the day and plan accordingly

This has nothing to do with Dhoni or Yuvi or Jadeja.

Dhoni is a keeper primarily and he can bat 8-10 overs if req

Yuvi is primarily in as a speciliast batsman

Jadeja is a spinning all rounder which we need

Pandya -    His bowling is 130ish so if we need someone to bowl 5-6 overs of 135+ then I rather take Shami who is a much better strike bowler and can bowl his full quota of 10 if he bowls well . Pandya hasn't bowled his quota in CT and is not looking threatening with the ball. He is quite easy to go for runs.

Pandya's primary role is as a big hitting lower-middle order batsman....who can start hitting without getting set. He is the only one in our team who can do so.

He will play if fit.

Really ?  I didn't see any hitting from him against SL .  Pandya will struggle to play more than few overs.

For slog hitting we have Dhoni/ Jadhav and Jadeja.

Pandya is supposed to be the 3rd seamer and a Strike bowler. and he is not being a strike bowler , how many wickets does he have ?  He's going for nearly 7-8 RPO.     We need a strike bowler who can contain and Shami can do that.

IMO you need to add another option. We need to have Shami over Ashwin. We have Jadeja, Jadhav and Yuvi who can roll their arms over so why Ashwin? We need Pandya for his hitting ability and to lengthen the batting lineup.

I think Shami has to be brought in for the final to replace Ashwin. Pakistan are good players of spin, especially off spin, and Ashwin would be rendered useless and it's not as if Ashwin has been rolling over sides in shorter formats. We have Jaddu, Jadhav and Yuvi in case we want more overs of spin and IMO Shami has to play in the final.

My team for the final...

Rohit

Dhawan

Kohli

Yuvi

Dhoni

Jadhav

Pandya

Jaddu

Shami

Bhuvi

Bumrah

I don't want to drop Pandya as he has the ability to hit big lower down the order and also gives us the luxury of aditional batting depth which has always worked for us - remember for India our success has come with 7 batsmen as it allows our top order to play freely. Plus he can chip in with a wkt or two, especially against pak, and is a gun fielder :agree:

Pandya scored 9 runs off only 5 balls against SL.  Then he got out. Can happen to anyone.

He has an average of 47 with a SR of 130 in ODIs so far....shows his hitting ability.

Dhoni takes quite a few balls to get set these days and is a No.5 batsman. He is not a lower-middle order batsman.

Jadeja is a poor ODI hitter with a SR of only 85.

Anyway.... Hardik Pandya will play if fit....does not matter what fans want.

Agree. It is so perplexing why Shami is kept out

That's a mystery given he was our best bowler in WC 2015, bowled in IPL and also in warm up matches. Ideally Shami should be the guy but if Kohli has no confidence in him then Umesh is the only other option by default coz Ashwin wouldn't do much at the Oval which is expected to be a fresh wkt.

Exactly so Pandya is in the team for 2 reasons correct me if I am wrong .

To play as the third seamer and be a pinch hitter.   So if he scores 9 runs and gives away 50 runs in 7 overs with no wickets.  What good is that to the team ?

I would like to see Shami play just because I want to see the biggest phainty Bakis have ever received. Other than that, India have enough firepower as is. Not worried.

Decisions regarding batting are not taken based on one match.

Pandya bowled well against Pakistan and South Africa.... so, in 2 out of 4 matches.

And even today it could've been different had he not bowled Tamim of a no ball. That dismisal was a replica of Duplessis dismissal and i strongly believe if it hadn't been a no-ball B'desh would've been rolled for a similar score of around 200 with Pandya ending with figures of 2/35 odd off 8 or so overs.
