Anil Kumble asked for 60% of skipper's fees

Remunerations dominated former India coach Anil Kumble's 19-page proposal on restructuring of contracts to the BCCI in which he had demanded that the "chief coach should earn 60 percent of the captains' estimated earnings".

The document also supported national coaches "earning from IPL" to "augment their income" without specifying whether it amounts to 'Conflict of Interest'.

He had also suggested that 20 percent of the players' Central Contracts should be variable pay based on their "fitness standards".

The PTI has access to Kumble's presentation, which he submitted on Committee Of Administrators' (COA) behest during the final of the IPL on May 21.

Titled 'Restructuring of Remuneration And Contracts of Personnel Of The Indian Cricket Team', Kumble, on Page 12 of the document, proposed a hike for the support staff.

Under Point No 10 'The Suggested Change: Enablers', the former skipper had given a four-column tabulation chart.

'Enablers' is a terminology Kumble used for the team's support staff.

While suggesting a hike of Rs 7.5 crore from the 'current' Rs 6.5 crore, Kumble in the 'Remarks' column wrote: "At 60 percent of Captains' estimated earnings'. Eligible for 30 percent of his salary as variable bonus on team performance".

Kumble's proposal is an indicator that whenever Virat Kohli would have earned more from the BCCI, his own earnings would have gone up proportionately.

The chart also suggested that Sanjay Bangar's salary be hiked from current Rs 1 crore to Rs 2.25 crore while R Sridhar should get Rs 1.75 crore instead of the current Rs 1 crore with "retrospective effect" from June 1, 2016.

However, something that has caught the attention of BCCI mandarins is his suggestion of national coaches "earning from IPL".

Interestingly, former COA member Ramachandra Guha, in his parting shot, had written about national coaches "moonlighting" for IPL teams which he termed as a clear case of Conflict of Interest.

Many had perceived it as Guha's veiled dig at Rahul Dravid, who doubled up as India A and U-19 as well Delhi Daredevils franchise.

However, Kumble in Page 11, Point No 9 stated: "Guidelines for Enablers" stated: "The Players are kept out of the contracts during two months IPL window. Similarly, the Coaches too need to be kept put of contract allowing them to be a part of the IPL -- this will enable them to augment their earnings and gain more experience particularly for the T20 games."

A BCCI official, who has studied Kumble's proposal document, told PTI: "While a lot of issues are pertinent but even his proposal on IPL is contrary to what Guha had written in his letter. If we go by what Guha had written, what Anil had demanded is a clear case of 'Conflict of Interest'."

While he had suggested separate 'Red and White Ball' retainership contracts, which had earlier been reported, there was one interesting point about a portion of Players' 'retainership Fees' or central contract money being linked as a "variable pay" subject to maintaining "fitness and Other Team Standards".

As per Page 6 under Point No.5 'Suggested Changes: Players', Kumble had given another four-column tabulation chart.

Under the remarks Column for the 'Annual Retainership Fees' for both Tests, ODIs and T20s, Kumble wrote: "20 percent of the Retainer money can be given subject to a player managing his fitness levels and other team fitness standards during the year."

Among other demands where "defined amounts" instead of "ad-hoc payments" for various wins like Rs 2 crore per player for 50-over World Cup while Champions Trophy and World T20 should carry a prize money of Rs 1 crore per player, each.

He had demanded "Superannuation fund from a part of Retainer Fee-access to post retirement" -- a 'Benefit Package' with compound interest.

This is like companies deducting a portion of an employee's salary for Provident Fund and Gratuity.

So we didn't have a bowling coach all his time ?

Any reason for that? I always thought that Bharat Arun was part of it but seems let of go when Kumble became coach.

So, that's your beef with Kumble!. I guess Kumble thought that he knew more about fast bowling than a 2 test experienced, useless coach who was feeding off of the team for nothing.

That's not a beef .That's an issue.

If Kumble found him useless then why didn't he appoint a fast bowling coach who is good.

We had bowlers who couldnt sort out their no ball issues for more than a year. That has cost us two world cups now.Why couldn't we rectify those.

These are the remits of the bowling coach.

And it's just not me.Its something the pace bowlers have demanded

If Kumble knew so much about fast bowling then why did Umesh Yadav publically ask for a specialist fast bowling coach?

It will look bad and lazy when they have hired such an accomplished bowler as a coach, but still he demands a bowling coach. Just one match before, Kumble was praised for coaching the bowlers and reigning their lines before the SA CT match.

I dont believe anything from players' demands after the Bunty fiasco. It looks like they were trying to undermine Kumble's authority by demanding a bowling coach.

Kumble is a spinner .We need a bowling coach for fast bowlers like most other professional set ups have.Suggesting that Kumble just because he is a spin bowling legend so we don't need a fast bowling coach is beyond ridiculous.

As I already said we couldn't fix the no ball issue for more than a year and cost us 2 world cups.

We have bowled insane no of extras in the CT.In semifinal and final Pakistan and Bangladesh bowled a combine total of 3 extras .They both have bowling coaches btw.We conceded a total of staggering 48 extras in just those 2 matches .A good fast bowling coach could have fixed that.

If he is then responsible for our bowlers bowling tight lines in the SA match then he is also responsible for their failure in final.Isnt that how it should work?

Point is he is a spin bowler.Thats should be his remit. We can see the improvement in Jadeja as a bowler (Particularly in test cricket) since he became coach.I can understand Kumble being unable to fix Ashwin's negative bowling in ODIs because Ashwin seriously has attitude issues by all these reports.

But what he ain't is a fast bowler. We needed a genuine quality fast bowler to help out our pack of seamers. This isn't something new. This demand for a good fast bowling coach has been for a long time .Not just after Kumble came ,but during Fletcher -Shastri time as well. But Kumble packed off the one we had and didn't bother to appoint a new one either.

Come on, a test veteran bowler of 132 tests can't coach or know about Fast bowling? How can Bangar who hardly batted in tests know more about batting than Sachin to coach a bunch of newbies. There are well known methods to make bowlers/batters practice. Cones, one stump, coin on the stump etc.  Sridhar might not be our best fielder in domestic to be a fielding coach to the national team.
