ITO in Delhi is the nearest centre for Air Pollution index near FerozShah Kotla. The pollution index is 198 here.

 

Last week where they played in Nagpur the index is 152.

 

Surely if they were having no issues in Nagpur they should not be having any life threatening issues playing in Delhi! Agreed Delhi may have high pollution but it is only long term dwellers who need to worry about it. It is not as if the levels are at 999 which is what the Index goes up to, that any imminent issues should be worried about.

I'm no athlete but having had virtually no ill effect from what is essentially dormant asthma since i grew out of it aged 10, i had a very bad asthma attack in my visit to Delhi in 2012. my ability to breathe was at like 20% for two days. certainly couldn't exist in a car for example.

Ok, let us agree that it was no dramebaazi. We grant that our eyes were mistaken when we found Sri Lankan fielders laughing from under their masks when an exasperated Kohli declared Indian innings.

 

Sri Lankan cricketers should be man enough and say that they cannot play this match any longer and walk off. Forget the worries of any repercussions and other such thoughts. Their life comes first which apparently is threatened in Delhi. Why they are batting now, and that too without masks ? So they no longer feel threatened now that they forced Indians to declare earlier than they would have wanted.

 

I hope that the next time India tours Sri Lanka, Indians take long dehydration breaks whenever the going gets difficult for them there.

Hayden and Trott are sitting on the sidelines, and know where their bread is being buttered from.  You can bet your house that both would be singing a completely different tune if they were players.

 

Look, it is very possible that the Lankans were taking advantage of the situation.  But its an undeniable fact that the pollution and smog was there.  

 

I think reflexively getting defensive and playing "defend the flag" in this situation is actually unpatriotic.  We clearly have a problem in Delhi and its surrounding area.  It needs to get addressed ASAP.   Its only a matter of random luck that the readings were not as high as they were a few weeks ago, when schools were closed and Emergencies were declared.   The Lankan's dramatics are, at best, henchman-esque in this situation -  like Mac Mohan a.k.a. Sambha in Sholay. The real Gabbar of the piece is the intolerably sheity environment in Delhi, and the impotent government that has failed to do its job on the matter.

 

The Lankans are well-known to push the boundaries of acceptable tactics in cricket - its not the first time, nor is it going to be the last time.  Intentional no-balls, fake appeals, you name it - and they are not shy to do it.   But let's not focus our anger, embarassment on them.  They are not worth it.
