Who is 4th best test batsman ever for India?

Gavaskar, Dravid and Tendulkar are comfortable top 3.

 

Contenders for 4th position are Laxman, Sehwag, Azhar(weak contender) and Hazare (not enough matches).

 

Kohli has already joined this race.

 

Pujara is getting up there.

GR Vishwanath, Mohinder Amarnath and Vengsarkar deserve mentions in the poll as well. My choice: Vishy. Bradman and Lillee called him better than Gavaskar, Andy Roberts called him the greatest Indian batsman and Hadlee called him the best Asian batsman he ever bowled to. Vengsarkar too has earned plaudits from his peers while Jimmy had an outstanding away record. The latter 2 though not Vishy level had probably the 2 highest batting peaks of all time especially considering the bowling attacks at that time. 

 

Kohli has done nothing to prove outright that he is the best batsman in the current Indian team, he has no right to be an option in the poll at this stage of his career. And please no Azhar (he wasn't really that great tbh), no matter how good he was in OP's eyes a fraud like him should never be in these sort of discussions, who knows how many test matches he sold for $$$$, what use was his batsmanship of if he was such a traitor?

Too early for Kohli and Pujara. Still need to have good 10-15 test matches to make a case, especially the ones coming overseas in next 10-15 months.

Laxman for me. Its a close call between Sehwag and Laxman, however Laxman was instrumental in the famous win against the Aussies and also, was more effective against deadly attacks on a more consistent basis than Sehwag. 

 

It will be interesting to have a proper analysis on who the top 10 batsmen of India have been ( Minus sachin, gavaskar and Dravid ).

as of now its VVS. Scored over 8700 runs at 46+ from that 6th down position.Also has evenly balanced record in all countries unlike Sehwag.More over he has played some epic match winning inns .Kohli might eventually overtake him

Vengsarkar averaged 55 at home and 32 away (with just 4 100s in 62 games, all 100s in England). He was great in Indian FC cricket though (52 avg). Vishwanth averaged 47 at home and 36 away but he wasn't that good in FC cricket (avg 40!). 

 

Amarnath was probably best batsman away from home before arrival of SRT. But he was like Rahane, averaged 30 at home, didn't play many matches though. He was a beast in Indian FC cricket like Vengsarkar.

 

Laxman (avg of 42 away with 9 100s) and Sehwag (avg 44 away with 10 100s) both are automatic choices in Indian all time XI.

Their (Vishy, Vengsarkar) away averages weren't that great because there was no measly Bangladesh/Zim/weak WI/Lanka to bolster their stats esp in case of Vishy. On difficult pitches and when the team was in trouble Vishy would more often than not outbat SunnyG, this much even little master has gracefully acknowledged in his autobiography. As long as Vishy and SunnyG played together there was nothing to separate the 2 of them, went neck and neck. Sunny made more soft runs, Vishy the opposite. SunnyG had a few 100s in losing causes, whenever Vishy scored a 100 India won/drew. SunnyG was better in England, Pak while Vishy was better in NZ, Aus. Against the full quartet in operation Sunny struggled just like almost every other ATG batsman of his era. 

 

Vengsarkar albeit a great batsman was not Vishy level, I included his name as a suggestion because when Azhar and Kohli can be options why not him.

 

Jimmy was the greatest overseas bully and also someone who was most ill treated by the selectors, mainly because of his dad. He was a real master of pain who got 11 100s overseas against WI quartet and Bottle cap Khan/Pak umpires. Purely based on his record in WI against the greatest fast bowling armada the world has ever seen and will ever see till eternity, he should be in the reckoning. 

 

Kohli is nowhere close to these 3 gentlemen no matter how hard his chamchas hype him up. Guy has scored the softest possible runs imaginable and has gone MIA even in home tests when the tide was against us. Both Che and Vijay are better test batsmen then Kohl but unfortunately they don't have the corporate/Bollywood/presstitute lobby hyping every run scored by them.

India's first great batsman in Tests with a superb record against the best bowlers of his time. Like a lot of players in 30s and 40s, his career was affected by WW2 so could only make his Test debut at the age of 31. Was averaging 55 before a dire series in WI (his last) brought it down to 47.65 .  In the Indian batting pantheon, only Sunny-SRT-Dravid are indisputably ahead of him IMO.  He's definitely in the Sehwag-VVS-Vishy class. The Indian All Time XI on Cricinfo had him batting at no. 5 ahead of Laxman and Vishy and he's well worth his place in the side.

However, four of top five played in the same era. Those were magical times for Indian batting.
