Kohli has raised his profile as batsman in this series

Looking at Rahane's short innings so far, he could have easily been the difference between India falling short in T1 and winning it.   Or even T2.  Let's not forget that Kohli didn't do much in his first few innings in this series either.

If rahane and kohli were batting in cape town at 72/3 ,I think we would have had a chance

The people who criticise current batsmen when they struggle against spin/swing/bounce dont realise that its a lot more difficult for these days to adapt than 10-20 years back . The amount of T20s/ODIs played these days makes a big difference , a lot of bad habbits creeps into their batting technique which is not easy to undo that quickly , before they do the series is done .

I have pointed this out time and again.

After the start of the T20 era, the biggest challenge faced by the modern batters is getting rid of  the bad habits that creep in while playing T20s.

No county experience due to the IPL plays a big part too.

Which series has been better for SRT than this one?

This is as good as any of SRT's top performance on tough tracks overseas.

SRT delivered in every overseas tour for 15+ years.

People forget how inhumanly consistent Tendy was, until 2005 or so.  Practically every single series, home or away, he invariably delivered a hundred.    Recency bias means they remember the last 5-8 years of his career, where he was a shadow of the ATG he was, for more than 50% of his test career.

Australia 1999. SRT had 3 50+ scores in 6 innings against McGrath/Warne/Fleming/Kasper/Lee including a hundred at MCG at a SR of 60+. The rest of our batsmen put together had 2 50+ scores in the series (one of them being Laxman's 167 when the series was  dead and buried).

I rate Dravid at that time a bit high in the same phase which you mentioned but Tendulkar was class too at the same time.

That 1999 series was brilliant where we struggled big time and lost 0-3 in Aus. Only Laxman scored in one innigs other than that, Tendulkar was by himself.

Yeah, you are forgetting how Dravid was consistently shyte against that Great Australian team - both in Australia and at home.   Dravid really kicked on and came into his own in the 2000s, and that happened to overlap with Tendy's slight decline from his ATG brilliance.  That's recency bias.  Peak Tendy i.e. late 1990s tendy is >>>>> the best that in-prime Dravid could even dream of doing.

But everyone's allowed their favorites, and I don't want to get sucked into a meaningless Dravid vs Tendy thing, when I have nothing but love for both.

Revisionism at its best.

If not for Pujara, Kohli would have lost 2015 SL series, 2015 SA series and 2017 Aus series and had the infamous record of being the only Indian captain to lose 2 home series since the 90s.

So when did I say pujara isn't that  good at home and in srilanka?? He is good at home or can say home track bully  he sucks outside asia check his mighty averages there where as  Kohli has good record both home and away not in  England though, but the fact is some were hailing pujara as num. 1 Test batsman of India which is wrong he isn't the num.1

You mentione huge phase, till 2005 and Dravid was great in that phase so I had to mention Dravid.

One can say same about Dravid that he went in a bit of decline in that series when Tendulkar was scoring run in Aus.

Fact is Dravid was a great and if you re read my post, I haven’t questioned Tendulkar’s greatness. May be you could have reserved that reply for other’s response who plan to diss Tendlya every time.

For me Dravid was pretty solid bat in that phase till 2005 and beyond scoring big runs when team needed.

I am pretty sure almost everyone called Kohli as India's best test bat overall even at that time...but said Pujara is head and shoulders above him in Asia.

Those pitches weren't this difficult. Bowling was ATG level, same has been case in this series too. SRT's performance was as good as this one.

Both are high quality performances, but there is nothing to suggest how that performance by SRT was clearly better. Kohli's performance is as good as any Indian batsman could do in these conditions.

Yes, but which series performances would you rate better than this one?

Aus 2007-08 series winning if not for umpire fraud

Eng 1996

Eng 2002

Aus 1991-92 simply because he was a baby back then

Aus 1999

SA 2010-11

all were very good, high quality.

No some did say puj is better overall , at the most both puj and kohli are at one level at home, kohli average 63 and pujara 62 at home not head and shoulders by any means, I do rate pujara at home but is a big no outside Asia perfectly fitting for a tag how track bully and kohli overall is better.

@Trichromatic Greatness with SRT was his consistency more than peak level. He rarely had a bad series. Kohli went MIA in Eng 2014 and last year against Aus. Also he has done zilch on every single rank turner we have played on. Peak SRT would get at least 1 100 every time even if he was in bad nick, eg 2003-04 Aus.

Dravid of 2001-2006 was a monster, at one point around 2005 home Pak series I genuinely thought he would surpass SRT but then post peak resurgent SRT re entered his glory days circa 2007.
