Sunil Gavaskar : 'India should have played more warm-up games in England'

“It was no preparation at all,” Gavaskar told ‘India Today’ channel, referring to the three-day warm-up game.

“I can understand that you need to switch off after a series but that can’t be five days at a stretch. It can be three plus three day breaks between matches but not five days,” Gavaskar said.

Gavaskar was also critical of Indian team for changing an official first-class game into a glorified practice session in the name of warm-up game with all 18 players taking part.

“They should have played at least two three-day games and proper first-class games. Not 18 players but 11 players. They should have prepared in such a manner to give themselves a chance in the Test match. They cancelled a warm-up game in South Africa and were thrashed in the first two Tests,” he said.

Gavaskar also doesn’t like the common notion that Indian team being in England for more than a month was a recipe for success.

“They deluded themselves that they are in England for one month. They played white ball cricket where the bat speed is different from red ball cricket. So there was no preparation at all,” he reasoned.

He also feels that Virat Kohli’s method of preparation can’t be emulated by one and all in the Indian team.

“Kohli can take 50 days off and then come back and score a hundred next day. He is an exceptional talent and if he takes time off, no issues. But the team management need to understand that others need practice. Like he wanted to play county cricket and skipped the Afghanistan Test. I don’t believe it was a correct decision,” he said.

For the next Test, Gavaskar suggested inclusion of an extra batsman in the playing XI.

“I always believe that in overseas conditions, you need to play an additional batsman. They got to believe in themselves that they can do well. I believe in this team,” Gavaskar signed off.

This is 2018, not 1978 with half a dozen or more preparatory games before the first test.

In same 2018, Pakistan played 3 practise games including a test against Ireland in preparation for a 2 match test series and they drew it 1-1. Whereas India's preparation was one innings batting before a 5 match test series.

Let's wait for the end of the series hall we, Pak would've lost the 3 test series. They were lucky just like SL before us in 2014, with the 2 test series.

Still doesn't change the fact they did way better than us in the first test which was due to better preparation.

Coach is Mumbai Mafia...

If Kohli has all the power and Shastri is just a yes man, then how is it possible that the game was reduced to a joke all by himself?

Posted

His dear old friend Shastri allowed the players to make merry for about a week after the end of 3rd ODI. Wasn't he aware of the itinerary? Shortening a practice match & cancelling net sessions will not help the cause.

Why did he not say this after the itinerary was fixed  ?

Nevertheless ... good to see a past player call a spade a spade regarding the insufficiency of practice matches and reducing the sole practice game.
