Two of India's best ODI middle order bats of the 2000s, Yuvraj and Raina, were picked for India at age 18. Should we do the same with Shubman Gill?

Shubman Gill's stats this season in both first-class and List A cricket were good but there were others who performed even better than him. Do you take that punt on him because of his potential ahead of other older players who performed better? The hope being that he would improve exponentially playing at the international level, the same way that Yuvraj Singh, Suresh Raina and Virat Kohli among others improved.

Very risky with Kohli as the captain. He is not a good mentor to youngsters if he feels that there are other experienced options available to him. He also lacks the patience to give a youngster a decent run with other players available.

Look at the Khaleel case.  Khaleel, Shami and Shardul were originally picked for ODIs. Umesh came in as a replacement ...  but played both games while Khaleel sat out in the 2nd,  although Umesh was not thought to be good in the first place while Khaleel was.  Moreover Umesh is a TTF in ODIs.

Someone like Shaw may get some backing in tests as experienced Dhawan, Vijay and Rahul have let him down. Similarly, Pant maybe backed in tests as there is no other proper WK batsman available in tests now.

All this points towards a lack of clarity of thought to some extent. I fear that, with many experienced middle-order options avalable although they are mediocre,  Gill  may be mishandled and his confidence may take a beating.

/\ Agree. Kohli is very poor with people management. Also he is an autocrat, arrogant and dumb. And its a lethal combination to have.  But I do believe not only Gill, Siraj, Avesh, Mavi, Nagarkotti, all of them should be given a chance. Whats the point of waiting for them to grow old?

Are the fast bowlers in your list playing domestic list A and how are they doing.

If he's selected in the XI, the No. 4 position does give you enough chance. It's sort of a hybrid position where you need the qualities of both a top order batsman scoring big runs but also the attacking mindset to score quick runs in the final 15 overs.

Yeah he's still young.. will be hard on him to play the attacking finisher role at times
