maniac Posted December 25, 2018 Posted December 25, 2018 In terms of hostility 2nd best. First will always be Srinath in 96 Johannesburg. A line up of Kirsten,Cullinan,Cronje,Rhodes etc were absolutely scared shitless. That was some hostile and scary bowling. Inswingers at an awkward length hitting you at 150ks. Cullinan who was one of the best pullers/cutters before Ponting and a one of the finest against raw pace rated that as one of the most hostile spells he faced. In terms of translating that to results Shami has to be up there. However the pitch and this piss poor line up bumps it down a little even though as an Indian fan we don’t see this often. Right up there with Srinath. I think Shami and Bhuvi are the only guys in India who pick up wickets in clusters when they are in the zone obviously different types of bowlers. rkt.india Posted December 25, 2018 Posted December 25, 2018 (edited) Certainly one of the best spells in a losing cause overseas. Edited December 25, 2018 by rkt.india Switchblade 1
Gollum Posted December 25, 2018 Posted December 25, 2018 (edited) Best spell? LOL not even top 25 and I am being generous, came against a **** batting line up and in a losing cause. Agarkar's match winning 6/41 in Adelaide (Hayden, Langer, Ponting, Martyn, Steve Waugh, Gilly, Katich, Bichel.. ) and Kapil's 5/28 against Australia in 1981 MCG (target was 140 something, we dismissed them for 80 ) when the home team had Greg Chappell (best post war Australian batter IMHO), Border (2nd best post WW-2), Doug Walters (ATG), Rodney Marsh... that was epic. Aise hi time leke analysis karoge toh 20 kya, 30-40 spell nikal doge isse behtar. I understand historically our quicks haven't been world beaters but let us not act like Bangladeshi fans here. Talking about hostility, I didn't watch the match, just checked his wickets after reading this thread. Can't comment and don't care because we were handed a spanking. sarcastic Posted December 25, 2018 Posted December 25, 2018 Shami's first wicket in the spell came when Australia is leading by a whopping 235 runs.... It is like saying, the opposition is 350 runs ahead and the bowler has picked all six wickets in an over..>> is that really useful when the target is already unchaseable.... What is the use of that spell when the match is almost out of the hands... It will merit a discussion when the opposition is yet to run away with runs...

Straight Drive Posted December 25, 2018 Posted December 25, 2018 (edited) The best i have watched was Kapil Dev bowling to Haynes, Gomes, Viv, Lloyd , Jeff, Logie. Kapil took 9 wickets for 80 - 90 in one innings that too on a Ahmedabad wicket which was very unsupportive for pacers during those times as well. Also against Pak he dismissed a one time bollywood actor Mohsin Khan who opened for Pak (pretty Reena Roy's hubby, her Aashaa movie was a good one too), Miandad, Malik, Wasim Bari who was a handy keeper bat and the renowned bat Zaheer Abbas. That sticks in mind as well. In sena he was wonderful to watch with those away moving deliveries, a free action without much coaching, probably the bowler with most natural bowling action. I doubt any Indian pacer has taken 9 wickets in an innings even in sena countries, forget on Indian wickets. Edited December 25, 2018 by Straight Drive

And nothing in test cricket is fluke. That Aussie team wasnt the kinds which would give you wickets in fluke. If you are talking about catches, then those things are planned, field positioning is planned much in advance. Which just watching on tv, you wouldnt know. Then again, theres no romanticism in sports. No bowler takes 10 wickets in 10 balls. That happens in dreams. When one watches cricket for years and years, one understands the work put in. And that work is never fluke. Give credit where its due. Mosher, Switchblade and Straight Drive 1 2

express bowling Posted December 25, 2018 Posted December 25, 2018 Hostile spells by Indians ... Srinath leads the list with lots of hostile spells from 1991 to 1999 Seen some such spells from Munaf in 2005 and 2006. Aaron bowled quite a few hostile spells from 2011 to 2015. Shami has bowled some nasty spells between 2016 and 2018. Bumrah has been hostile in almost every test he has played since his debut in January 2018. Mosher 1
Rightarmfast Posted December 25, 2018 Posted December 25, 2018 One spell that nobody talks about is Srinath 13 wicket tally against Pakistan in 98-99 test series. It was played on a dead pitch. I think Srinath had reduced Pakistan to 4 wickets under 20 runs. Like Shami knows how to run over the tail, Srinath was amazing against top order batsmen. The only thing he lacked was a good threatening bowling partner and a good 2nd change. Mosher, Straight Drive and Adi BB 1 2

But his in cutter was prodigious and at real pace. His stock ball was wonderful.. Rightarmfast 1
Rightarmfast Posted December 25, 2018 Posted December 25, 2018 I think more than the away move, he lacked the length. Length has always been the undoing of Indian fast bowlers.
