Why are we reluctant to develop or pick the next gen 140 k + pacers ?

Recommended Posts

I am looking at our selected T20I squad against Bangladesh.  The chosen pacers are Shardul, Chahar and Khaleel.

Not a single fast bowler has been chosen.

Yes, Khaleel and Shardul can bowl some 140 + deliveries but that percentage is usually not that high. Moreover. Shardul is too short for a pacer who varies between medium pace and fast-medium. Short pacers need to be really quick.

Our fast bowling has been revolutionised by the rise of Bumrah and Shami ... who combine high pace and bounce with accuracy and movement. Along with other skills, their ability to sustain good speeds throughout the day has been one of the biggest factors contributing to their success. And Ishant combines 6'5" height and bounce with accuracy and is not a medium pacer either.

Yet, we see that most of the new pacers coming through and getting selected are either medium pacers or vary between medium pace and fast-medium. This applies to Shardul, Chahar and Khaleel.

Yes ... we are talking about a T20 squad where pace is not that important. But since this team management is completely reluctant to try new pacers even against weak teams like Bangladesh while playing at home then we are left with LOI squads only.  ( Veterans Shami, Umesh and Ishant are our selected pacers for this home test series and not s single young quick bowler is there )

Could we not have tried atleast 1 young quick bowler in this test series against Bangladesh as the 3rd pacer in a 5 man bowling attack  ??

Saini, who is a quick bowler, hasn't yet been tried in either tests against weaker teams or ODIs. Yes, he is probably injured now but I am talking about the last 18 months.

Why not try Prasidh, Mavi, Avesh, Nathu etc. ... whoever is good at this stage ... in A-teams and LOIs. ??

Would Ganguly look at this aspect of developing the next gen of 140 k+ pacers ??

Let us not forget that we are getting results with pacers who combine skills with 140 k+ pace. Medium pacers did not get our pace attack anywhere till the 2010s decade.

Repeated selection of shardul thakur is staggering..pace and bounce is unsettling in every format, T20s included. So along with guys like chahar (good swing bowler) and khaleel (left arm variety?), one quick tall bowler like Saini, avesh, prasidh shld hv been tried. Tests should hv seen Saini or siraj in squad instead of ishant.

Absolutely  !

Even in T20s, a format where pace is least important among the 3 formats, having atleast one genuine quick bowler helps s lot.

And I feel that the left arm variety is helpful only if the pacer in question deserves a selection anyway irrespective of his bowling arm.

Squads for Deodhar Trophy selected ....

India A: Jaydev Unadkat, Sandeep Warrier, Siddarth Kaul,

India B:  Mohammed Siraj, Rush Kalaria, Yarra Prithviraj,

India C:  Avesh Khan, Dhawal Kulkarni, Ishan Porel, D G Pathania,

10 pacers selected

6 are medium pacers ... Kaul, Unadkat, Kalaria, Dhawal, Porel, Pathania

3 are fast-medium ...  Siraj, Warrier, Prithviraj

Only 1 maybe a fast bowler. ... Avesh

So ... 60 % are medium pacers

Mavi not selected in any if the 3 teams

No Rajpoot either.

Whats disappointing to see is Deodhar trophy filled with trundlers like Kaul, unadkat, dhawal, rush kalaria

We also need this rule now like BBL in deodhar trophy

1. Sides shud have all 140k+ bowlers

2. need one leggie in every side

We need a chief selector who has played sufficient jnternational cricket and is progressive.

From being one of our biggest match winners in LOIs in 2018, Kuldeep is suddenly not even good to be part of the squad.

Something fishy is going on here.

He is injured i think, but he is definitely out of reckoning for T20s and uncertain starter in ODIs, which is astounding considering he averages ~ 2 wickets per match from 71 LOIs With good ER (<5 in ODI and <7 in T20s).

All it took was one average WC following a poor IPL, and the guy is now out in cold...so much for coaches and TM working with players, giving them confidence.

Lesson Kohli seems to have learnt from WC is to have 'batting ability' in tail  :--D hence stress is on bowlers who can bat a bit, so sundar, chahar, maybe even shardul for that reason. Have a feeling that the real issue, i.e. middle order cluster-* will continue, with same rotation policy seeing Iyer, pandey, pant, Hardik, krunal, dube, samson, gill, maybe even Jadhav and DK being moved around in 4-7 spots.

MSK started his tenure trying to pick quicker bowlers.

But during his last 12 to 18 months, he has become a total trundler lover.

I don't know what happened  !!

Why was Prasidh removed from our 50 over A-team. ?

Why did Mavi not get A-team games before his injury ?

Why was Avesh played so intermittently for our A-teams ?

Why is Rajpoot totally out of the picture ?
