Memorable performances include 221 in Eng and a 100 to help India chase 400+ in WI Performance at the point of entry of 100 or less runs: A top order batsman Among Indian test batsmen, I think Gavaskar is in a league of his own .... Among world ATG openers, he is one of those who can play both pace and spin well .... Gavaskar! Edited September 3, 2020 by zen AuxiliA, sandsaims, Lone Wolf and 8 others 2 9
cricketfan28 Posted September 3, 2020 Posted September 3, 2020 Wow Sehwag is a suprise for me. I hope Kohli comes close to Gavasker.

Sehwag is special with his avg & sr combination esp. in Asia and Australia .... His ability to hit spinners is probably unmatched Quote I hope Kohli comes close to Gavasker. Kohli is getting close to Gavaskar in many of the categories: 500 or more runs in a series: 4 times (2 more needed) 3 or more 100s in a series: 2 times (1 more needed) 4th innings performance: Avg 48 outside subcon (well below Gavaskar's 76 but Kohli should try to improve) Edited September 3, 2020 by zen kirkutfan 1

Majestic Posted January 1, 2021 Posted January 1, 2021 Gavaskar was brilliant but he got to inflate his stats a bit between 1977-1982 as lot of main players went to WSC and international cricket quality went down. I will rate SRT higher as in terms of runs tally, he is way ahead of the pack and in averages, he is comparable to the best. On Virat, we will see his stats once he retires. Dravid is great too but below the mentioned three names. Rahane is still behind Ganguly, haha. sandsaims and Stan AF 1 1

kirkutfan Posted January 1, 2021 Posted January 1, 2021 I think when he started his career, the Indian record for the highest number of runs in tests belonged to Polly Umrigar at approximately 3600 runs and an average of 42. Gavaskar practically tripled that bench mark at an over 50 average. He really took Indian batting to another level. I think it’s great that we produced very nice batsmen after Gavaskar retired, but in my mind he was the first among India’s world class batsmen. Forward Defence 1

The series where he really was able to take advantage was when Kallicharan’s West Indians visited India in 1978, when he scored over 700 runs. There were a couple of Australian second elevens too. But at that time, Australia’s fast bowling depth was really good. Those squads had Thompson, Hogg, Wayne Clark etc. Not easy pickings. England and Pakistan, if I recall correctly played full strength squads v India. Overall, especially relative to other Indian batsmen of his time or before, Gavaskar was streets ahead of the rest. SRT took things to another level. The best was when we had Sehwag, Dravid, SRT, VVS and Ganguly in the same line up. That might have been our strongest batting combo. But in my mind we needed a Gavaskar to start things off and show what was possible.
kubrickian Posted January 1, 2021 Posted January 1, 2021 Gavaskar is a genius. I dont think many people realize how tough it is to open the innings in SENA countries. Because after a few failures, everyone keeps asking someone to be dropped. As though we have some ready made opener in bench who will immediately score runs. You need to ear mark some openers and give them a proper go(say, a couple of years) because it takes time to also develop the skills to be able to do well consistently as an opener in overseas conditions. Just to put in perspective, Gavaskar, and later maybe Gambhir or Vijay or Sidhu (that too only to an certain extent) come to my mind who succeeded consistently as openers in overseas. That shows you how tough it is. kirkutfan 1
Real McCoy Posted January 1, 2021 Posted January 1, 2021 Why did you leave tests against bhangbros? Don't you value a 240 against such a tough opposition. Unfair I tell you Gollum, Lord and zen 3

Unfair I tell you Sachin and Sanga benefitted so much thanks to BD lol. Against the current BD they wouldn't have scored so many 100s, 200s for sure. Coming to topic Gavaskar has to be the most overrated cricketer in Indian test history. Made merry in Packer years, otherwise would have averaged 44-45 with 8-9 100s less. And no way would he have scored 10k runs.
Gollum Posted January 1, 2021 Posted January 1, 2021 (edited) @Jimmy Cliff this myth about Gavaskar's record against WI, Aus will never end, will it? People don't want to know more about which bowling attacks he plundered to boost his stats. And his appalling record against top bowlers those days, no wonder Lillee, Hadlee, Roberts rated Vishy higher. And in any other country no way would he have escaped punishment after that 36* Edited January 1, 2021 by Gollum sage and Stan AF 1 1
