Playing 11 for the boxing day test

The 2nd Test begins in a few days. One forced change will be Kohli as he will be on paternity leave .... In a live series, I do not just go by runs scored (you can get out to a great ball, a blinder of a catch, a run out and so on) or wkts taken (you could bowl well w/o success while get wkts because of pressure created from the other end) but also if the player looks in good form, along w/ the conditions 

 

My shoo in players are 

 

Agarwal

Gill (since he bats in top order, give him the series in the top 3)

Pujara (can move to #4) 

Rahane (ideally should open as he can struggle v spin but may not change his position esp. since he would be the captain) 

Pant 

Y 

Bowlers 

 

If Jadeja is available, he can be considered at Y in place of Vihari .... For X, continue with Shaw (one more chance on a relatively good batting surface) or bring in KL

If India wins this test match, I'd give Shaw another go.  Slot in Gill for Kohli at #5/6.

 

Pant for Saha? I would have gone with him for T1 already.

I am not sure about the 2nd opener.

 

On the one hand, young Shaw should not be dropped after just 1 bad test 

 

But on the other hand, he has developed a major technical issue of leaving a big gap between bat and pad. Playing him with this issue may result in a major setback in his career, as he is likely to do poorly till he irons out this issue.

 

Rahul maybe chosen for this purpose.

Both Jaddu and Ashwin have been more or less same overseas minus Jaddu's fielding. So, I don't think they should make any change in that as Ashwin has done well this test.

If Ash has fitness issues.  Or if we are playing 2 spinners.  Don't see any other way in for Jaddu.  Mind you, hammy injuries aren't exactly quick to heal either.  So at this point, Ash is a lock for T2 over him.

Ideally? Yes. Of course I agree with you.

 

In reality?  You should be aware of India's "seniority" disease when it comes batting orders and pecking orders.  Apart from openers, who are doing a job that few batsmen want to do, most middle order batsmen start at #6 and work their way up.

 

On Gill's 'natural' position, he's a guy who converted to opener - a smart move considering it got him into the test squad so quickly, he isn't really a 'natural' opener, has been a #3 all along his rise through the ranks.

If I could, I would open w/ Rahane but he is going to stick to #5 (did not move up a slot to bat at #4 even in the practise games iirc) 

 

As the departure of Kohli, who has glued himself to #4, has created an option for Pujara to move in to that position, allowing Gill to bat in the top order (his chosen natural position) or #4 .... Since Gill is considered among talented oir youngsters, I (like most of the fans) want him to get a good debut at a super test venue like MCG Boxing Day Test

Ashwin as an opener can't really do anything worse than Shaw in this match. He can see through Starc and Hazlewood's first spell and hit a couple of silky smooth boundaries and get out at 15-20. Pujara can then come at one down and do his thing.. this way we can have one additional bowler at MCG. If Ashwin somehow manages to last through an entire session, it will be massive psychological boost to the team, the batsmen coming after him can be more  confident

Bhai, our batting will be weak without Kohli. We can't play both of them. Also, can't drop Ashwin after this performance. Jaddu and Ash both can play together in Sydney test but don't think Jaddu will play in the XI in next test.

Let's face it, bewda will choose the team or koli will select it sitting from India. Hahane is so weak that he will have no say in the team selection nor will the players give him any respect even if he scores big. That's how it will be.
