This is his first season.. Lets wait for 1 more season to see if he can grind it out in Indian domestics. Only problem is he could pick up habits which will show up as weakness in swinging / seaming conditions

Padikkal has played 2 seasons of FC.

I hope he develops into a great FC cricketer, because he has all the needed qualities

Fair enough .. Although he did not get a continuous run in 2018-19 season. Just played 5 matches.

We need a good left hander in the top-3 if not the openers to have good success at international level. Hopefully the pool of left handers expands

Thanks for reminding me.

When was the last time Dhawan was the top scorer in a test series? Or even a odi series for that matter

I am talking today, not what happened sometime back.

There is real dearth of good quality long form batsmen currently in domestic cricket.

In world cricket & India is no different. The batsmen are product of their times.

Historically in India's case. The reason we always struggled overseas.

Don't you think India's struggle overseas is more to do with an ordinary/substandard bowling attack for most part of our history?

Feel free to discuss in the below thread, unpopular opinion but I think our overseas struggles are because our overrated batting units have failed to justify their inflated reputations. Bowlers are always easy targets, disposable because of deification of our batsmen.

Opposite in case of Pakistan, look at their last 5 Aus tours and see how their bowlers have underperformed, yet they always invent excuses for their chosen ones and pin all blame on batsmen.

Batting was hardly stood out like not able to chase 120 in 1997.

I will not disagree that most of Indian batsman have not been clutch in the mould of Steve Waugh but the point is bowling wins you matches. India's history is replete with average bowlers, who sometimes lacked skills or sometimes stamina.

May be, he will get his chance in A-tours and if he perfoms, who knows?.. but he is a right hander, isnt he? We are talking about southpaws/lefties

Hardly anyone agrees on this, I'm still tempted to vent it out.

It will be mighty difficult to achieve excellence in tests while batting across green tops, fast and bouncy turf, turning tracks, defending across many sessions and then smash every other ball for your league at least two months a year besides playing odis. The geniuses like ABDV, Smith, Kohli and Williamson can broadly do justice to all those hats but most batsmen will fail in either challenging test conditions like Rahul/Rohit or simply ruin their overall game, ending up being washerman's dog like Ajinkya. Its not to say that Ajinkya would necessarily be better without T20s or Pujara has turned out to be fantastic but T20 cricket isn't gonna help current or future cricketers to build their game.

There is a space for test specialists and a pool of cricketers should be shortlisted and groomed with that in mind with some job security in contracts covering up lack of IPL paychecks. A system could also be devised so that players are picked at most for 2 formats: the solid batsman play all tests and the better strokemakers among them provide some insurance in odis. The sloggers can fill the core of T20 and ODI formats. Exceptions will be required for the types of Sehwag to play tests but not to the extent that Dhawan and Rahul show up opening in England tests. Likewise, Shami is a total waste in T20s when the likes of Natarajan can achieve the purpose and even Shardul can use the knuckle on certain days. Why Shami shows up in T20s and Shardul in tests is beyond me.

^^^ Quality post @Clarke bro.... :hatsoff:

Completely agree with identifying and picking "test specialists" at an early stage and keeping them away from limited overs cricket at all costs.

But unfortunately our board only cares about $$$ and the men that matter don't have enough brain cells to even comprehend this. As long as they get the hefty amounts from IPL and media rights , they don't give a krap about our test results overseas.
