This TM latest casualty was sanju samson after 6 matches....better prepare ourselves

Samson has a mediocre record in all formats... Gill has FC and test nos to back him up

Samson plays his fc cricket in bowling paradises similar to that of last ahmedabad test...i dont see many people taking that into perspective here....

IMO playing away from his body or lack of foot movement are not  his main problems. As someone else posted he is taking offstump guard and due to that he is taking his front straight down the pitch and to access the ball he has to get his bat around the pads in angle  and with that his head is faliing over due to which he is extremely vulnerable to incoming deliveries.

He has high backlift as a result he will always do well on bouncy wickets but he will be very fragile against swing bowlers.

There are no bowling paradises in Ranji cricket.. Anyways his IPL record is bang average too

The big issue is inconsistency.  The once-in-a-bluemoon heroism is untenable at the India-level.

I am not taking examples or not picking only stating facts..  Whenever Rahul & Mayank played together..  Mayank outscored him & then got to cash in on a bumper home season where he ended up rivalling Bradman.

Coz when they played together  in test rahul was in his worst patch and mayank in golden

As far as T20 is concerned it was captaincy pressure, its not that these 2 havent played together in previous season where rahul outscored everyone

2016 pitches & 2019 pitches of WI are as different as 2014 Aus pitches & 2021 ones.  The fact ever since Dukes balls are being used on Greenish WI pitches since 2018 being opener there is hard Job..  That's why only two half centurions since that period in Mayank & Burns...  No other not even the home side.

I can't  say anything for Eng as Mayank never got to play there in India shirts..  He may get as we know how it goes with Indian openers on Overseas tours.

I cant say for Mayank - If he goes to england with this....anderson will have a new bunny before his retirement .  Gill problem is not even 10 % of what mayank and someone of the clips i showed are when he was in top form . He gets squared up and thats death in england. Gill has one advantage that he plays late

In NZ no being the team's highest run scorer doesn't counts as a failure especially not on those doctored disgraceful pitches.  Facing the new ball there is tough.   Pakistan got much easier pitches & we saw what happened with their openers like Masood who even scored a ton in England with dukes ball so here goes that argument.

Regarding Gill it's clear he is not a genuine opener & sooner TM realize it will be better.. At the moment poor guy is only opening coz there isn't a spot otherwise.  He should replace one among Rahane or Pujara if any of them fails.

I'd still play him in WTC final though & see how he goes with the dukes vs Boult Southee.

why is it not clear that he is not a geniune opener? He has opened for his state and India A side and scored loads of runs

Again loads of difference Williamson has covered his off stump & Gill is visible..  WS is trying to cover the swing most likely here..  Also look at the back leg of Gill..  Absurd comparison overall.  Gill's backlift also slightly wider & head position is also different.  Gill's is falling over.

No point in Comparison with one of the best technical batter currently with a young guy who has just started & needs big improvements.  And Williamson is playing for the line here.

its not a comparison its to point out that he just needs to get a lil tighter and thats it. He has a small very small chink but no way as big as shaw n mayank has

WTF is this with lazy elegance? Is Laxman or Rohit guiding him? He should be moving like a live wire at his age. Trigger movement kya hain?

Everyone has their own style. Lazy elegance is misunderstood from long. Some players are blessed with that Extra time and gift of timing. They look fabulous on days they click and casual when they don't. Its with every style-

Same sehwag looked brave when it clicked and fool when it didnt

Same Smith looks to be in utmost control the day he clicks but the when he doesnt it looks ugly

In england playing late is actually a good thing

Well, they all got such elegance, later in career, this guy is starting. It is all fine here in this series. But he doesn’t enthuse as a starter in England with no footwork, he can play bounce or short pitch late, but lateral movement will trolley him. He is not considered a failure because everybody else did and India is winning, but comparing to MayNk in NZ, he topscored , but all others failed and India list and hence he is also considered a failure. He did ok in 2018, hope he makes it back. LOIs and IPL screwed his test batting

No they had it from start, its a gift either u have it or u dont. U cant just become elegant after 25 yrs. Gower, Laxman, Rohit, Inzy, azhar all were gifted with elegance

I dnt think IPL screwed it that much, he always had that chink teams found it after a point n white ball made it worse but he always had that chink.  He got selected in his purple patch but that doesnt last for ever. In purple patch everything comes from middle but rest of the days arent that good and if ur problem gets caught it become worse.

I don't think he should be opening. He will be an even more valuable middle order batsman. New ball trickeries should not stifle this promising player.  Kick Rahane out and put Gill there.

I’ve said from day 1, Gill should not be opening. Highest he should ever bat is 3. He’s great against pace/bounce and looks good vs spin. It’s swing where he really struggles (as evidenced in Melbourne test). To overcome this he needs to play county cricket for at least one season. India should delay his entry to ODI team for this purpose and focus on the long term greater benefit. Let’s not mess him up like we did Rohit Sharma by feeding him a diet heavy on t20s/Lois.

he could bat at 3 and be a punter-type player. But I think he should move to 4, sundar to opening, pant to 6, and kohli at 5 (on current form).
