Rethinking Sachin the captain

He was the most unlucky captain as per me. We should have won that test against Windies chasing 120 And that would have been our best overseas series win in many years.

We should have won the Joberg test against south africa in 96/97 where cullinan and rain saved South Africa after dravids 100.

we won only 1 test overseas between 1986 to 2001 . Crazy. Against srilanka in 1993. We even lost a test series against ZIMBABWE away in 1998.

we should have won the tri series in south africa against south africa in final when mohanty was swinging the ball like bananas but we couldn’t chase it.

we won the sahara cup n titan cup though when he was the captain..

the biggest blot on his test captaincy was the home 2-0 Loss against South Africa after which match fixing scandal broke out and ganguly became captain..

IMO, he was not as bad a captain as was made out and his tenure was deeply affected by match fixing and politics. Others definitely underplayed under him

However, he is still leagues below the likes of Ganguly, Dhoni and other indian captains

In his autobiography be has revealed that he found that when he took some action, he didn’t get the desired result while exactly same moove with same logic gave Dada desired outcome. For example he sent Robin Singh to bat against some opposition and Singh got out immediately, Dada applied same logic and sent Robin, and he played a gem of inning. Tendulkar believed that there is some luck factor and better not screw team India by hanging on to captaincy.

So it not acumen but its luck why he gave up captaincy.

Shame Kohli didn't recognise that after his 20% toss win rate

I completely agree. Whatever Dhoni did turned to gold, even joginder sharma. Ganguly had bad luck with winning cups. A lucky captain is way more important than a great player being captain

Would Ganguly bowl Joginder in the last over of a final? The results are different as they reacted differently in similar situations.  Calling it luck is taking credit away from Dhoni.

His game awareness for shorter formats was better than anyone

Ganguly did try lots of out of the box thinking like sending Robin Singh to bat ahead

Remember, Misbah was pwning Joginder, it was his stupid, completely not needed attempt to try that paddle sweep which cost him his wicket, he had just hit an enormous 6 down the ground of the previous ball. Any other time, he would never try that paddle shot. Also, they had run out of wickets, if they had even 1 more wicket, with 3 balls remaining, anything was possible.

Also remember, by that time, all pacers had finished their quota so Dhoni literally had no other option. Irfan, Sreesanth and RP Singh were all done. The only other option would have been to bowl a spinner and Harbhajan was going at 12 an over with Misbah hitting him for multiple sixes. It was one false shot between Dhoni and his status today. Woth Kohli that mishit would have gone past the keeper for 4

Sachin was not a bad captain IMO. Tactically he was as astute as anyone else. However, I felt he was overburdened and maybe didn't feel he was giving 100% with the bat. He was an honest man and stepped down like a gentleman to focus on his batting which was wayyyyy more important than his captaincy.

And there are some now who shamelessly cling on to captaincy for years despite horrible record and nothing to show for it. Sachin was class above these current pretenders.

Robin singh only played 15 matches after Ganguly became captain and his highest score was 42 in the first match of his captaincy. he never had an impact batting higher during these 15 matches

more a myth about Gangulys captaincy. Also Sachin s amnesia i suppose.

Yeah I just meant he tried, not that it succeeded. And you are right about the amnesia from Sachin

Tbh I never rated Gangulys captaincy,he just took over at the right time when india has started producing world class talents and I think Tendulkar would have done better if he was leading at that time.

So you give credit to Dhoni for giving Jogindar sharma chance in last over . But hesitant to give credit to Ganguly for giving chance to youngsters even when they were not doing well intially and btw biggest beneficiary of those youngsters chosen by Ganguly was Dhoni. As those all players were became real match winner by the time Dhoni took over.
