How did Dinesh Karthik manage to find a place in 2019 WC team in semi final match?

IPL is the best benchmark. Top players in IPL will most like be your top players in any format.

IPL is the only true cricket average you can rely on, others not so much.

Problemon ICF is once you start hating someone you look beyond their improvements. It has been Rohit, Dhawan and Kartik.

His six against BD was better than six by Dhoni.

Except he not no way near top player im IPL with an average average and average strike rate in 2019

But the stats shown by people on this thread show, that's not true, his numbers were average and there were others doing way better

stats can be used to show anything you want - bottomline is that Virat and team "mgmt" decided to look for specific role players for #6 or lower, who can be asked to do the high risk low reward job of batting at 120+ SR, while the top 3 stay comfortable in batting at around 90-100 SR.  Karthik was not a bad choice for that type of role.  He's a guy who showed he could deliver those types of cameos in pressure situations, was experienced, and could hit high quality pace bowlers for boundaries.

The issue isn't Karthik's selection "worthiness" - its that the team was structured in such a way, that didn't really maximize Indian chances of winning the WC - it was and IS structure in a way to make Virat's role primary and allow him to rack up more and more meaningless ODI centuries, while outsourcing the "tough" job of batting with more risk to other players, especially 'new' ones, or 'juniors'.

That is the fundamental problem.  By narrowing the discussion to Karthik's "stats", or whether he deserved to play for India in ODIs, the goal posts are shifted to a tangent, which works great for the corrupt complacency being perpetuated in our white ball cricket.

IPL 2019 had 18 Indian batsmen scoring more than him.

He was not a top player in IPL by any margin.

That year the decline started but there he was htting a peak slightly before that.

Be objective and look at the six he hit. It is one of the most clutch shots in history of Indian cricket. A lesser player would not have done it.

He was trending down but let us be candid the WC was not lost because of him, it was because of Shastri. You cannot pick three wkt kprs and expect to win. and on top of that there were no repercussion for the loss.

It was Nidahas reputation carrying him and lot of ICF was positive towards him and glad he was picked ahead of likes of Vijay Shankar in the semi

Playing Vijay was the dumbest thing ever. No experience and you play WC. Morons.

Same way Jadhav did or Rayudu was supposed to...and don’t forget 3D player.

Our plan was bad and players who were chosen under the hill to implement that plan.

If guys like Iyer and pant were played for entire year before cup we might have won that semi final.

But if you do that and  they do well, then the clamor begins to bat them higher, and the ad dollars start shifting quickly to the young  "next" star.  Why risk that when you can milk status quo for  another  3 + years easily without any accountability.

that is sadly probably true.

there are other threads talking about how shastri / kohli should develop pant and imo he is doing well today despite them.

also this is such crap thinking as if you win cup you get remembered forever.

so in your opinion which one of the 3 wicketkeepers shouldn't have been selected? pant/dhoni/dk/kl rahul?

Whole planning for WC 2019 was shyte, People are retrospectively bashing DK now but many here had some new found trust on DK, few here advocated for him opening in England tests recalling his one good innings in 2007 tests. DK should have never been picked test-ODI squad. All that started with Dhoni and whole agenda to fix him in middle order, TM thought DK as some newly found finisher, He was never going to succeed in ODIs.

Rahul does not need to keep wkts as he is good enought to play on his own.

At that time it was a toss up between Dhoni and DK. I would have dropped Dhoni and picked DK and that is my preference.

Any two proper middle order batsman and the WC would be in India.
