No. Don’t think so. People live in fool’s paradise and don’t understand how India works. A campaign like this is like a project management exercise. Each part of SOP has to be established to be scaled up. And we talking the biggest vaccination drive in history of any nation.

Every country progressed in calibrated manner. First health care workers. Then senior citizens and then the rest.

Do you even remember how many days only senior citizens were allowed to have vaccination? And then they changed it to 45+ yrs old probably looking at he surge in cases & now suddenly everyone's in the queue? Is that how "project management" works :hmpf:

Yes. One month. The variant has changed the game. But looking at numbers in February it was a fair plan. Quite frankly with casual hesitant Indian opening it to all would have made no difference.

I know people whose appointment got cancelled because they didn’t have even min people to set up infrastructure. In hindsight everyone can be an expert.

It has not, there's no evidence that the more publicized variants are the ones wreaking havoc recently. Not to mention nCoV has been mutating from the start!

There was always going to be a second wave, we had that during the Spanish Flu over a hundred years back & same across every other nation during the current pandemic. The second wave almost always has been more devastating, it was a matter of when & not if - we were simply not prepared for it even though we arguably had a lead time of 3-4 months from places like USA!

The biggest failure of Modi, in my book, is that he turned out to be a normal tax-and-distribute politician.

This pandemic chaos had to happen. Anyone thinking that one man must have made a difference has his/her though process divorced from realities of Indian society.

India is a country of strong and localized  traditions that had continued for centuries. People are so attached to this. No way they will change themselves in a short period of time.

I'm talking about Modi - the head of the central govt, not Modi the one trick show pony for his endearing fans!

If that was a general comment then yeah agree with the sentiment, 50% of the blame should also go to our stupid *in population who took things very lightly!

He's one of the leaders who got it wrong for his own country. USA proved it's priority by vaccinating its own before lending a helping hand to someone else, unfortunately this is the correct way forward.

For a country that boasts largest manufacturing site in the world, it has been progressing at a snail's pace to vaccinate it's own people. In over 3 months, I do not think it is acceptable to have only 10% of population vaccinated.

I agree. There is modi's  failure. I was aghast to see him attending a book release ceremony and speaking in election rallies when pandemic fires were burning.

1) It’s not like stock was lying around and they were not using. It was given to states. Health is state subject. Some states did a better job than others.

2) Even in this raging pandemic people are hesitant about vaccine. So it’s not like it can forced down their throat. Let’s understand that this is first time vaccines are being first given to elderly. The media and opposition had already raised doubts on vaccine.

So I cannot see one single thing on vaccination which he could have done differently. Like I said this business of not taking individual responsibility and blaming the govt for everything us not my thing. At least Blame right authority. Health is state subject.

But in terms of preparedness and messaging, I do believe he missed the mark. But we are in unchartered territory.

Don't get. We are the fastest to reach 12 cr vaccinations. Can't be faster than that. You can't vaccinate more than manufacturing capability.

Yes exactly. I am trying to wrap my head around this too. What are people expecting ?

But I do think Sputnik clearance could have been done quicker

Ventilators, Oxygen supply - you're saying he or the center in conjunction with the states could not have foreseen this & prepared better for it? Are you for real?

We are not - this has happened in other parts of the world, this exact same theater played out in NY & much of the US last year when De Blasio & Cuomo held daily briefings citing lack of equipment & hospital beds as the biggest issue!

How do you know that for sure? Do you know how many vaccinations China carried out for instance? And is that supposed to be an achievement considering our daily cases today?

Somehow in our country everything is debated and discussed to death. And next, nothing happens.  The reluctance of the elderly can be traced to their education in whatsapp university. I saw some messages where fools were asking to inhale the exhaust of a pressure cooker to "kill" Covid.

Ok. So now you are changing goal posts.

We are talking oxygen. Fine. Now who is responsible for oxygen capacity in India. Is it Modi or centre ? Now once you check this, check if the centre provided the funds to those responsible. If yes, did they spend it ? Health is governed by states as per Indian constitution. Tamil Nadu, Kerala and North East have done a great job. Punjab, Maharashtra, MP and chattisgarh are tottering.

It’s okay to provide sweeping views without going into details of roles and responsibilities.

And to your point on China. Please do share the data with us if you have it. India has roughly 3 MM capacity per day and it has averaged around that for last two months.

I'm not changing goalposts, these two are correlated. What's the strategy of vaccination, what happened to preparing for the second wave? Is that all up to state, then why do we have a govt at the center? And I've not even begun about the WB elections!

There is no reliable data from China, that I'm aware, so the claim rkt made is suspect at best.

How many vaccines did we export, & the ones that were wasted in part because of the restriction that only 60+ could be vaccinated? From the other thread -

https://www.firstpost.com/india/amid-covid-19-surge-massive-vaccine-wastage-opens-up-another-battlefront-for-india-9558321.html

The Delhi High Court also on Tuesday pulled up the Centre for “criminal wastage” of vaccines, and said “whomsoever you can vaccinate” should be vaccinated, regardless of age, to ensure “all doses are fully utilised”. Blaming the wastage on bad planning, the bench said, “We cannot make an app to deal with this situation? You should have known that there would be a situation that people may not turn up, because if a person turns up and you have to open a new vial, you will not tell him to come tomorrow.”

“Whether he is 16 years, 20 years or 60 years doesn’t matter. All need vaccination. Please look at this aspect,” said the court, adding that even one shot should not be wasted as the pandemic is hitting young people too. At least two state governments – Delhi and Maharashtra – had requested the Central government to expand vaccination coverage to younger people, as they make up for the majority of the COVID-19 cases.

National Health Authority CEO Ram Sewak Sharma had said the wastage of coronavirus vaccine has been an area of concern for the government, suggesting that consolidating smaller vaccination centres into larger ones can help address this issue. “There are other minor details like the need to consolidate vaccine centres into larger centres and if that happens then vaccination wastage will also reduce. Wastage takes place generally in the last vial. People at times not turning up after getting appointment is also an issue," he said.
