Discussion points:

  1. India's bowling combination - Will Ashwin and/or Shardul play or will the team management go with the same combination as second test?
  2. Have Pujara and Rahane done enough to hold on to their positions? Is there an opening for Mayank/Vihari?
  3. England's combination:
    • Mark Wood is out due to injury, Overton (slower but can bat - similar to Robinson) or Mahmood (fast bowler but limited batting) may play
    • New opening pair of Burns and Hameed
    • No. 3 - most probably Malan but outside chance of Pope
  4. Pitch and conditions
    • Headingley pitch looks flat this year - Naseer Hussain (link)

PS: can keep updating this post as more interesting discussion points/updates keep coming

As Wood is out Mahmood is set for debut.  It's actually between Overton & Curran for that pace bowling A/R spot.  It could go either way.

Overhead conditions will matter in Headingley.  Pitch is expected to be same like in the Ashes game 2019..  We witnessed lower 1st Inns total from both sides.

Mahmood is quick enough.  Not express pace like Wood but certainly on the quicker side.  140k+ bowler mostly

Seem to be good weather on all days with much less cloud cover . Ashwin should play with quite a few lefties & expected dry pitch.

India should believe they have  5 High quality  bowlers who can negate 30 runs lesser scored without jaddu. If India expect more then 30-40 then India does not deserve this MO.

Good if India goes with more positive intent in batting with one of Pujara or Rahane dropped , but wont happen in this match.

Jaddu must play. Maybe Thakur (if 100% fit) comes in place of one of the quicks, preferably replacing Ishant who looked low on energy in T2.

If Kohli/TM want Ashwin, they shouldn't drop Jaddu to accommodate him.

I looked up this new diversity guy mahmood on youtube. Pace is same as pre-injury Bhuvi, mid 80s.

He made babar his bunny in recent odi series

Yeah good seam position & gets decent movement.  There was this Brydon Carse as well who was hovering around 90mph but is quite raw compared to Mahmood.

KL played open all through his FC career For 10 years, just because he can play shots doesn’t mean he is fit for MO. We don’t need to fix what is not broken. He has only now regained some confidence in Test batting, changed technique and has found a way to leave deliveries . We don’t want to shove him in MO and confuse his spot further. His MO position came up only after he started keeping wickets in T20is in 2019. Certainly not a MO bat in tests

The worst part of the last test win is the fact that Pujara/Rahane will play again. :((  They should drop Pujara IMO.

Good opportunity to start grooming KLR may be for no.3 position. I think eventually no.3 and no.5 should be between KLR and Gill.

Bring in Sundar/Shaw/Mayank as a batsman and they wont do worse over a reasonable period of time.

It is not a bad thing, unless we lose and are desperate, we don’t need to change team in the middle of the series. Rahane looked confident and Pujara’s innings need to include consideration of time as well, he can play out time like there is no tomorrow, need him to bat out sessions

If Shardul plays then probably bringing back Ashwin won't be a bad idea too.  As much as I want Pujara out that 40 odd saved his spot looks like.

Potential XI

Rahul

Rohit

Pujara (sadly)

Kohli

Rahane

Pant

Ashwin

Shardul

Shami

Bumrah

Siraj

Ashwin especially for Burns Malan Root
