Gollum Posted August 27, 2021 Posted August 27, 2021 (edited) Considering the fragile state of our batting won't it be a better idea to go with just Ashwin, Thakur and 2 other quicks? We used to employ this combo regularly in the 2000s and 2010s before Kohli's captaincy takeover. Something like: KLR Rohit Shaw Kohli (he isn't going anywhere) Mayank/Vihari Pant SKY Ashwin Thakur Siraj/Shami Bumrah Lot will depend on Ashwin (well rested) bowling bulk of the overs, since we don't have handy part-timers. But worth a shot? Edited August 27, 2021 by Gollum Norman and SRT100 1 1
Gollum Posted August 27, 2021 Author Posted August 27, 2021 Think our batsmen will be mentally destroyed after this test. Like it happened in 2014 tour. Need fresh faces, and more depth, more shotmaking ability in our MO. SRT100 1
express bowling Posted August 27, 2021 Posted August 27, 2021 No ! Bowling is our strength and we should not weaken it. Replacing Pujara and Rahane is the way to strengthen our batting. shami_123, rtmohanlal, SRT100 and 4 others 1 6
Gollum Posted August 27, 2021 Author Posted August 27, 2021 First 2 tests we underbowled Jaddu T1: he bowled 16 out of total 152 overs T2: he bowled 28 out of total 180 overs This test Ishant was just a passenger. Had he not bowled with the new ball maybe Eng would never have got such a dream start. We are always underutilizing one bowler. Even in WTC F Jaddu and Ashwin were underbowled, latter actually looked more threatening than most quicks on display from both sides. raki05 1
Gollum Posted August 27, 2021 Author Posted August 27, 2021 This is where we are missing a Vijay Shankar in the MO, crying shame that he is in India when he should be owning that #5 spot against Eng and delivering 10-15 overs every innings. Wouldn't surprise me one bit if someone like him made better use of brand new ball. Easier to swing at his pace and trundlers generally rule in Eng. With the bat no way he would do worse than our trinity.
Lone Wolf Posted August 27, 2021 Posted August 27, 2021 (edited) Expecting to drop both Pujara & Rahane at once is stuff of dreams & ain't happening. As far as the idea goes I won't mind it at all. Edited August 27, 2021 by Lone Wolf SRT100 1

Ankit_sharma03 Posted August 27, 2021 Posted August 27, 2021 oval is generally flat and our bowler can have a long day in field like last time, then also we dropped pandya and opp made 500 5 bowlers are a must specially on flat wkts. Even batsman on bench arent great to make such compromise express bowling 1

In England, it is unlikely that the extra batsman is going to come in and score meaningful runs. We cannot weaken the only aspect that has been working for us consistently in the last 4 years ... our bowling. SRT100 1

Lets not compromise that for guys who doesnt give much confidence either express bowling 1

Even if they are bowling decently, captains feel comfortable bowling pacers in pace friendly or seam or swing friendly conditions. And Ishant is unfit and hence was underbowled. Should not have been picked in the first place. I don't know why Kohli is picking a half fit seamer. ( Ishant hasn't been fully fit in the last 2 years ) Edited August 27, 2021 by express bowling
shami_123 Posted August 27, 2021 Posted August 27, 2021 OP thought like proper Indian that if batsmen are struggling let's axe bowlers to strengthen batting. Then we wonder why we draw matches at best outside of India. Have we ever given a thought that our bowlers are actual star performers of 5his team and we need to build our team around them ? We just need a serviceable batting unit, right now middle order is in rut. So, is it not a better idea to address this elephant instead of weaking our bowling strength ? express bowling 1
Lord Posted August 27, 2021 Posted August 27, 2021 We are already playing 7+4 with Jadeja playing mainly as a batter anyway If anyone was 100% better than Jadeja he'd have been playing at 7. Only question is Ashwin or Thakur.Ishant definitely needs to go Samcric 1
speedheat Posted August 27, 2021 Posted August 27, 2021 Bigg No!!! When a batsman makes a mistake, why punish the bowlers for it? Keep on with what you're good at, which is bowling. Stick to your strength.Furthermore, with only four bowlers, there's a risk Kohli may overbowl Bumrah, breaking his back! It's not difficult, simply swap out duds like Rahane and Pujara with Gill, Sky/ Vihari. Done. express bowling 1
Adamant Posted August 27, 2021 Posted August 27, 2021 Play both Aswin and Jadeja along with three pacers. Jadeja Ashwin Shami Bumrah Siraj Lord and kohli 2

Atm we are underutilizing one of our bowlers, every match. Batting is our problem right now, not bowling. Someone like Ashwin can play the role of strike bowler as well as compensate for lack of 5th bowler, you do know he can bowl long, dry spells to keep quicks fresh if the situation arises?

Gollum Posted August 27, 2021 Author Posted August 27, 2021 (edited) What exactly has Ishant done this match? 22 overs of dross. Just for the sake of playing 5 bowlers why play a mediocre, unfit has-been? Rather have Ashwin bowl 35-40 overs in an innings and rotate 3 quicks so that each bowls 20-25 overs at high intensity (same workload as now). Not like this Eng will bat for 200 overs, they aren't that good. Will bat for 120 overs at max, if a spinner can bowl a third of that, are 4 other quicks really necessary?
