Wouldn't surprise me one bit if someone like him made better use of brand new ball. Easier to swing at his pace and trundlers generally rule in Eng. With the bat no way he would do worse than our trinity. Horses for courses, he would have been worth a spot in the squad for these conditions. He can take Rahane's spot and and certainly score more than him and bowl as well. Also, I would have loved to see a pure swing bowler like Deepak Chahar in a game or two.

Unfit guy but he has stamina to bowl marathon spells. And quite often those spells went at <2.5 rpo which means he can do the holding job if required. Ishant's 22 overs went for 92 runs this match.....to concede that many Ashwin will have to bowl 35 overs on his worst day. Edited August 27, 2021 by Gollum
The Realist Posted August 27, 2021 Posted August 27, 2021 26 minutes ago, Gollum said: What exactly has Ishant done this match? 22 overs of dross. Just for the sake of playing 5 bowlers why play a mediocre, unfit has-been? Rather have Ashwin bowl 35-40 overs in an innings and rotate 3 quicks so that each bowls 20-25 overs at high intensity (same workload as now). Not like this Eng will bat for 200 overs, they aren't that good. Will bat for 120 overs at max, if a spinner can bowl a third of that, are 4 other quicks really necessary? We used to employ this combo regularly in the 2000s and 2010s before Kohli's captaincy takeover. Something like: KLR Rohit Shaw Kohli (he isn't going anywhere) Mayank/Vihari Pant SKY Ashwin Thakur Siraj/Shami Bumrah Lot will depend on Ashwin (well rested) bowling bulk of the overs, since we don't have handy part-timers. But worth a shot? You want to penalize Jadeja for being the 3rd best batsman and being forced to throw his bat because India decide to play 4 no. 11s and he runs out of partner? Mayank and Vihari are miles ahead of Shaw and SKY in order to get into the test team. What has Shaw done in FC or Tour matches to show that he is not the walking wicket that he was in Australia? Has SKY even played long-form matches for India A? The assumption that fans make that one can extrapolate white-ball form in subcontinent to Dukes-ball performance in England is delusional. I know everyone is frustrated with the long rope being given out to middle order but two wrongs don't make it right. Cricspin and Majestic 1 1
diehardpacer Posted August 27, 2021 Posted August 27, 2021 Just drop Ishant .5 bowlers are a must .Rest Shami & Bumrah if needed. They should have been rested in this match itself.

adi B Posted August 27, 2021 Posted August 27, 2021 4 seamers are a must ,ideally the fourth should be a batting AR like Pandya . We can either drop a spinner and play with 4 seaners and 7 batsmen with vihari bowling some pies or play 6 batsmen ,ashwin ,shardul and 3 seamers . I like the later one

I like the later one If the fourth seamer is supposed to be Shardul or Ishant, Ashwin can replace either of them unless it is a green seamer. On a typical pitch this series, I would expect the below bowling figures for 20 overs bowled: Ashwin: 2-50 Shardul: 2-60 Ishant: 1-45 or 0-70 (depending on his luck and probability of batsmen getting out to shitty deliveries) On a green mamba, probability of Shardul/Ishant getting 3/4 wickets becomes more and hence you may choose them over Ashwin. It is a travesty that the best spinner in the world is unable to play ahead of Ishant. I am not even considering Ashwin's batting. adi B 1

Texan Posted August 27, 2021 Posted August 27, 2021 We can keep 5 bowlers as long as we can include Ashwin, Jadeja and Thakur to g8ve some weight to the lower order. Shaw for Pujara and Sky for Rahane.

Gollum Posted August 28, 2021 Author Posted August 28, 2021 (edited) I think Jaddu will be playing for his spot for T4 in the remainder of this test. Scored 100 runs at 25 avg (sure his batting position is a disadvantage but he is unable to bat with the tail) 2 wickets after conceding 190 runs, over 5 innings, total 76 overs No real impact while fielding....ATG fielder but keeper, slips, FSL, SP, leg gully are the important catching positions. Not good enough to hold on to the spot especially since he didn't have a good outing in WTC F as well (sub-par batting and no wicket). He needs to finish strong here, at least a 50 and if they bat again, a couple of wickets when match is alive. Edited August 28, 2021 by Gollum

ShoonyaSifar Posted August 28, 2021 Posted August 28, 2021 Better to stick to the 5 bowler theory. Keeps the pacers fresh especially as it's a 5 test series. With 4 bowlers, we could easily have wilted and conceded 600+ in this test. Ishant out and Shardul in is one definite change. Ashwin to come in for Jadeja. Siraj. Between Bumrah and Shami whoever is exhausted should make way for ideally Prasidh but TM will pick Umesh.

Flat pitches mean bowlers will need to bowl more. need more rest. jaddu will come in as specialist bat.

If you are playing two spinners your fast bowlers will automatically get good rest, dropping an extra batsman on a relatively flatter pitch isn't the right way to go about this.
