Hoping to see Air India compete with the Emirates and Singapore Airlines etc, not right away, but in 5-10 years.

The history of Air India, and aviation in India, has Tata pioneers leading it.  What was once theirs, is now restored.

The Soviet era nationalization is hopefully over. Banks and Railways next

I hope they don't do the railways though.  That needs to be left alone.

Too much "privatization" is as bad as "nationalization".  Look at what has happened to UK rail system after Thatcher privatized - the oligopoly of private players has led to constant fare increases and quality of service and availability has stagnated.

"Utility" services such as electricity, railways, etc should not be privatized in favor of 'for-profit' companies.  Capital intensive industries that are difficult for government to manage are good candidates for privatization.  Airlines are fine, especially international, because citizens will always have the choice of other competing alternatives.  For local critical infrastructure, especially in things like railways, where its essentially a monopoly utlity, privatization is a terrible idea.

Indian folks are so sick of government run bureaucracy and failures that they are all too easily seduced by the hype of corporate 'efficiency'.  Corporations can be, and mostly are, more evil and greedy than even the worst government bureaucracy.

Good to see Air India coming back to Tatas... Generally they have been successful in their acquisitions be it Jaguar-LandRover or Indian Hotels... They generally give time for the integration and path to profitability.

ps: Regarding the soviet era nationalization, it did give us ThumsUp , Gold spot & also CDAC (PARAM) ...and a host of other desi products

Maybe not entire railways, it is too huge now, but maintenance of some routes, stations and services like food can be divested. Too many sectors that are loss making are continue to operate with no efficiency targets.

You want banks privatized? You mean like the federal reserve? Its a slippery slope to debt slavery like US. Even from a customer perspective, I can already see the difference between the top national bank (SBI) and top private bank (HDFC). SBI atleast has the respectability of a trusted bank also with modernized netbanking facilities. HDFC was the pioneer but has lost its sheen as the customer friendly bank. Now, KYC hassles, marketing from teller to buy credit cards, annoying RM phone calls in the afternoons and weekends has made HDFC not that attractive. I don't even need to cover other private banks such as ICICI, Kotak, etc. SBI and Bank of Baroda are still ok in that they don't do these things......YET

Great decision.

But I wonder what they will do with Vistara ( the best domestic airline in India by a long shot ) - and better than any domestic airline that I have flown across the world.

Vistara is largely domestic but they also flew to all major destinations in the gulf, Singapore.

If they can make Air India like Vistara --  Emirates, Etihad and Qatar are going to get a serious run for their money.

Food and ancillary services can definitely be looked at.  Maybe some token routes.

Fair enough. ICICI proves that the same corruption/loopholes in nationalized banks is there in private as nationalized ones. Regulation is key, but our govt. SC, media is wound up in farmers agitation, beef, CAA. I was looking at loss making PSUs, the merger of banks addresses some of those concerns with banks. I think think this following a good movie, but a lot in TN won't like it

A lot on faux environmentalists are against manufacturing in India.

Imagine Indian banks imposing bank fees if you don't withdraw cash 15 times a week, just like in the US.

 They are doing that now? It wasn't the case a decade ago. It won't surprise me the least though. US is a country where no matter how much money you make and no matter what status and jobs you have, you never have the feeling of future being secure.

Federal reserve in US is privatized ? How is country’s sovereign debt linked to privatization of banks ? How is private / individual debt linked to privatization of banks ? Central bank provides banking regulations for managing credit to the banks.

All frauds and bankruptcies in recent times in India has PSU banks as major stakeholder. SBI for Kingfisher or Jet and PNB for mehul choksi. I could cite many others.

You don't know? Most Americans are only coming to know of this since the last decade.

I'm not saying public banks are angels. You forgot to mention frauds in yes bank ICICI. So don't say "all frauds" are from public banks

Yep, that's Wells Fargo for you. Living in the US is hard unless you make at least $80,000 in an affordable state like Texas. For Cali, NYC and Chicago it gets more expensive.
