Creating a squad of T20 specialists.

Problem isn't about playing IPL. Problem is lack of exposure for Indian players. Other players play half a dozen T20 leagues all over the world. Our domestic cricketers aren't allowed to do that. IPL is just one of those T20 leagues. Difficult to compete for players playing one league against players that Play half a dozen leagues. Exposure, experience are completely at a different level.

I don't think BCCI ever took T20 internationals seriously. So loss isn't a surprise. I believe we need T20 specialists who only play T20s and not test players playing T20s. Adjusting to different formats will always be a challenge for multi-format players. Let those T20 specialists play all over the world harnessing their skills and gain experience of big tournaments.

Shaheen, Buttler, Nortje etc play every format too. When a player is good enough, he should be played in all formats

This guy’s endurance is amazing, at 22 he is playing pretty much every game in every format for Pakistan without rest and hasn’t been injured once:hatsoff: much better than that draamebaaz Amir

Instead of playing leagues, I really want a team of T20 specialists to play series in parallel like we did SL few months back. This will really help keep some of our T20 players busy as we play Test series elsewhere.

The problem when they are going on tour, the main players stay there and play all formats and come back. Shane watson brought up an interesting point about Australia. He said Australia never plays their main team in bilaterals. So they don't deliver as a unit in the world T20s. Leagues are more popular than world T20s. If India wants to take the format seriously then they  start playing a unit that is more likely to take part in the next world T20.

We never played a proper team even in ODIs under Kohli without changes. I see a point in what Shane said here. Goes back to 2011 WC win where the players had game time of many ODIs and came as a strong unit to win it.

You will have some players good in every format too

This is true.. Look at England they have players like Malan, Livingstone, Mills and to an extent Rashid and Ali exclusively playing the T20 format around the world while India only drafted in the likes of Kishan, VC and SKY at the last minute without proper exposure to international cricket or other leagues. We should treat T20 as a separate format to ODI and not merely an abriged form of it. Kohli and Rohit need to do what Root did and make themselves unavailable for the format gracefully

This is the problem that hails our cricket, every star wants to play every format irrespective of ability. It becomes a scandal if their position is questioned, we need BCCI to have the power to control these stars.

This team was selected on reputation rather than form, we might have been fine if it was an ODI, these stars would have played themselves into some sort of form. But the pace of t20 doesn’t allow them that comfort.

At the management level there is a complete lack of imagination required to succeed in t20.

Actually we should have played a bunch of T20Is prior to WT20 as a team.  A settled & firing combination would have done wonders.  Even 20 T20Is instead of phony IPl would Have generated great revenue for BCCI.

Pakistan playing their domestic National T20 cup already looks like a master stroke to me.  All their top players played in those games.

What's the difference between national cup and IPL. IPL is our domestic tournament, got played on those same pitches of Dubai.

This might also benefit us in Tests,We couldnt complete a Test Series that was very winnable because everyone was fatigued.

The t20 team consisting of many of the same players and the same captain is also looking switched off

If we make sure there are different set of players playing different formats we could see better results where everyone is giving their best.

If we do not have T20 (LOI) specialists, how come we keep winning all the bilaterals? Choking in ICC Trophies is largely down to a leadership group unable to create the right environment for the same set of players. They feel the pressure, pass it onto the rest of the squad and from there on we crumble.

To me, it's always been about the apparent lack of leadership and not so much about ability. A Rishabh Pant with a T20 career SR of 145+ doesn't become such a poor player with no ability all of a sudden.

On top of this you have your coach saying just before the WC that the T20 format doesn't matter. And a captain saying a few months back he had achieved everything he wanted as a leader. How will any team under such a disinterested leadership group even feel motivated to do well?

The team needs a fresh thought process under a more hungry captain-coach combo who set higher targets for themselves.

That's why need a different squad which takes T20 cricket as a different sport and only concentrate on that. Those players play T20 leagues world wide and not play any other format.

No team has got a squad of T20 specialists. Look at England - Malan and Mills is the only 'T20 specialists' rest all are LOI players.

What we need is change in our outdated approach to ODIs and more flexibility in batting positions in LOIs where individual stats matter less than the larger objective of the team moving forward. Plus the larger issue of merit based selections and not because someone butters the captain well.

Our T20 selection should be formulaic.

Design a system where a composite score is calculated as such:

Give high weightage to recent IPL and T20 WC performances.

Give lower weightage to IPL performances in the past.

That way the selections are merit based and transparent.

And if someone were to choose a player whose composite score is lesser, he has to openly vouch for him in the team meetings and to the media.

But why not? We can do that. ODI and T20 teams shouldn't be same.  This will also help us finding/creating players for specific formats. Can have better test players too. Test players will have to just play tests or max ODIs. No T20s for them.

Because in bilaterals t20s team usually don't play full strength and don't take it seriously.

A player who can hit freely in bilaterals sudden cannot lose the skills in ICC Trophies. And if that's happening with a number of players with the right skills, there is something rotten in that dressing room.
