Hardik Pandya mega discussion thread

Bigger reason is the top order's success in T20I bilaterals meaning limited opportunities for the middle order. Lack of willingness to give the middle order bats a go at the top of the order has been our biggest bane.

This is why england have the resting and rotation policy. So that each player gets enough match time as well as enough rest

In india our advertisers and PR won't allow big names to rest

Our tuk tuk top 4 is the biggest reason our middle order struggles to get going. On flat pitches, they consume too many balls with not high enough SR.

I don't think there is any relevance there. Whether they are tuk tuking or going fast. Middle order has to get going regardless of whether they are tuk tuking or playing aggressively. Their role doesn't change except may be when there is a collapse. Raina/Dhoni/Yuvraj never had issues with top order taking too many overs. Let us admit the truth. These guys are not good enough. Pant/Pandya/SKY/Jadeja. Pandya had his moments. He has regressed badly.

Spot on. The middle/lower order has been pathetic for years now. Yes they may not get enough balls/time but that will always be the case across limited over cricket unless you open.

Have to seize the moments and deliver, otherwise don't be an elite sportsman. Toleration of mediocrity is why the tournament trophy cabinet is so bare.

Pandya is in poor form right now and without regular bowling, he does not deserve a spot in the team.

But, let's not belittle his past. He gave us the balance we needed in the team.

Even today, what alternatives do we have? Do we have any bowler who can bowl around 135kph and get decent overs in and bat with SR 140+? Also, let's not forget his fielding, which is better than most other Indian players.

Yep, the top 3-4 are playing old fashioned cricket so the lower middle order has to take even more risks. Against good bowlers and/or in tough conditions, the top 3-4 get out to again leave the lower middle order batsmen under pressure. Against weaker teams, they bat for long to deny those guys in the lower middle order some game time.

Teams like Eng will not allow such batting from its top 3-4 unless batting conditions are tough. Since the top 3-4 get out going for strokes on many occasions, the other batsmen are better prepared to handle collapses as well. The approach creates an impact focused attitude and a virtuous cycle.

I remember during 2019 WC, many guys (fans of these Tuk Tuk top order batsmen) wanted England to fail so that these Tuk Tuk batsmen would continue to Tuk Tuk. And here too, you will see them write against high strike rate batsmen, only to get on to the high strike rate bandwagon later on

Dhoni played for 10 years in T20I based on his big hitting reputation, but scarce performances.

Pandya is going same way. 5 years, nothing to show, but reputation of lower order big hitter.

perception v reality.  SR of 140 when others go at around 110-120 when they do not score a 50, which is most of the time. If SDP bats up the order regularly, his SR could be close to 200 as he would have opportunities to hit 50+ scores as well

This report says injury-ridden PAndya didn’t provide a real picture of his fitness. Post lackluster performance in the WC, he has been dropped. Rest are rested

What a waste of an investment. Went missing most of the time. He went missing around world cup 2019. They used Vijay shankar as the last minute replacement.  Then he came back, then he went again.  Now again he is back with no fitness.  It is cringeworthy to think he has grade A contract.

Dhoni would hit a couple of fours and six in an useless scenario and boost his strike rate lol It is a bit like that.

@zen he was dropped, not rested like Jadeja. He needs to prove his worth now

I go by reports on Cricinfo (not some random news. If you Google Hardik dropped, it will show you various rumours) and it is a non issue. Remember TM played him in all the games which is more important … Already proved his worth. It is just that Indian selectors and ex-players are laggards (you can see that during commentary too) to understand a pioneering approach (for Indian cricket). Don’t forget we are dealing with a culture that is slow to react to anything new and that does not conform to the traditional ways of thinking. In India, if you are ahead of the time (per Indian standards, which are decades behind in many fields), you can suffer.

The team needs more batsmen like SDP to become a fearless and dynamic side that makes other teams nervous.

Not at all. The day he is fit enough to bowl and prove his fitness in FC cricket, he will be back.

Perhaps the kick at the right time.

Lets see. If India can find their combination right without him like we found in tests, then won't be picked again.. I'm all for it if he can find his mojo back again.

So true... Look at our 2007 wc most of our start were pathetic barring eng and nz match where we had great start. Other than that whether it's final ,sf curicial match against sa and league match against pakistan. Our 6 over score was not even with 7rr and in most matches our middle/lower order contributed and we never settled for mediocre score. Somebody should show those highlights to these stats reader to see how middle order plays. This Pandua can't even compete with already done and dusted irfan pathan of 2007 wc team.

good riddance. Now MI should also throw out these 2 jokers back to junk from where they picked up.
