Shreyas iyer will be our most consistent player, he can succeed king Kohli.

I have big doubts about his ability to play high class short bowling. The ideal batsman would be gill in aus iyer in india..gill hangs back so he is always going to get dismissed with ball sneaking between bat n pad . On the flipside in good bouncy flat batting tracks which tendulkars n laxman feasted on he ll be fabulous.. so for eg like brisbane day 4/5 ( he was amazing)..he ll be great in sydney Melbourne  old trafford Southampton oval brisbane wellington day 3/4/5.l kind of pitches..but he ll struggle on same pitches on day 1/2 ( which all did except for tendulkar n virat in prime.. in some tests dravid ) as it ll have a bit of lateral movement.. iyer as he comes in middle order and rarely u get bounce here he ll be massive in india as he is ten times better playing spin than rahane as he has assured footwork n great hand speed which helps him in tonking sixes.. remember one thing in 2000s every batsman be tendulkar sehwag laxman dravid Ganguly played domestic even while playing for india and all played county which not only improves your batting but also your temperament as you gain more patience leaving balls outside off stump on a damp county day 1 pitch at edgbaston or chester le street.. i wish gill iyer gaikwad shaw and even mayank n rahul play at least one season of county..

No one.

India will not produce any more 52+ averaging player in tests over 100 test.

This is correct. We just don't have batting talent anymore. Bowling is the real deal for us. I prefer it that way anyway.

But no batsman shows this imperious batsmanship you see very early at the start of their career.

Well some of them show it, quite clearly if you remember :om:

Lol at Shreyas Iyer.

He can be a good HTB that's it.

Pant is definitely the next coming of Gilchrist but just like the latter he won't be a run machine but a clutch performer.

The se are the Options we have -

1.Gill - not sure though with IPL and all affecting his mentality.

2. Prithvi Shaw - dunno why people dislike him, it's not always about technique.

3. Yashasvi Jaiswal - he actually looks like the real deal and my bet is on him.

KL Rahul should have become a run machine by now but boy does he have temperamental issues!

What is this obsession with having one "batting superstar"? Why can't we just hope to have a whole team of capable mentally strong batters/players who aren't really "superstars"?

For the first time, we have a pool of almost a dozen u-25 household batters who could go on and form a rock solid top 6 for india. So, instead of looking for a next kohli, next sachin etc, we should look to build a ' 2000s Australia' level top7 filled with guys, who can turn a game around from any position.

Enough with this one batting superstar chewtiyapa that has clearly hampered us in atleast in the last decade.

That 2000s Aussies team had Ponting, Hayden, and Gilchrist with high averages. Can you give an example of a team which had no batsman averaging among the very best in the world but had dominated all other teams? Probably West Indies of 70s with just one worthy opponent.

I hope Shubman Gill is able to do this. He has the ingredients and the attitude. He needs to tighten his game in a few areas.

Only SHaw and Shubman gill are as talented as Virat and rohit.

one more guy who seems very talented is  SANJU SAMSON..if i am the selector , i will give him 10 innings and then decide whether to continue with him or not.

gill shaw and samson seem to be most talented , ishan and rishabh are just hitters so i dont expect them to kinda play settling innings like virat.

Lol of course we need batsmen with high averages. I'm just asking why only one? As you said, Aussies of 2000s always had atleast 4-5 guys in the top6 who average 40+ in both the formats. They never follow this "single batting superstar" crap mindset that we've been following since Gavaskar

Actually, before Kohli, we used to have a lot of batting superstars in team, didn't we? Sachin, Sehwag were superstars, Dada-Dravid a touch below them, VVS, I feel, was never as popular, Gambhir never got his due. Just in last decade, we didn't produce many talents for test cricket. Kohli was alone, Pujara is well below him, Rohit-Rahul underachieved. I wish things will be better this decade. Hope we have 4+ batsman man 45+ average.

The contenders are :-

Rishabh Pant

Shubhman Gill

Prithvi Shaw

Yashasvi Jaiswal

Devdutt Paddikal

Rituraj Gaekwad

However, among these, Rishabh Pant  is definitely not the answer. He is not the most technically perfect batsman in the Indian team and has clear flaws against the moving ball. His game also is such that being a wicket keeper, he will more likely play those counter attacking knocks at inconsistent rate rather than being a run matchine at consistent rate.

Prithvi Shaw looks more of a mix of Sehwag and Rohit, a player who has glaring technical deficiency and has a huge gap between bat and pad. He will most likely be a Bradman at home but doubt he would be any better than Viru overseas.

Paddikal also looks more of a flamboyant LOI type batsman with lack of gears and very much like a Shikhar Dhawan. He doesn't have a huge FC stat to make a strong case either.

Gaekwad is a magnificent player of spin but his challenge will be same, against pace in overseas conditions.

Jaiswal, not too sure of him.

That leaves us with Shubman Gill, who probably look the closest to anything you can get of Sachin Tendulkar or Virat Kohli. But does he have that hunger and will it stay for long enough? That is the real question.

Jaiswal could turn out to be the dark horse. Seems to have hunger for big scores. Has good adaptability too, as he went from playing close to run a ball in last year's IPL to quick scoring this season. Instead of just one star, it's good that we have 4-5 good players, who could share the scoring burden between them. I think Kohli is the last batting superstar for the foreseeable future.

We always had this "one single batting stalwart" in our team who seemed to enjoy exponentially more fame, media attention, support from fans and backing up by higher ups that usually lead to multiple "individual above team" situations. It wasn't that bad until Kohli PR took it to another level post CT 2017. I mean who can forget the nauseating "Super V", "King Kohli" bullcrap during the WC 2019 by Star and other media when it was Rohit who was carrying our batting.

Now we are perfectly capable of rolling out teams with multiple "run machines" so we don't really need to be dependent on one individual and treat him like some savior. I'd much rather have a 8/10 team with equals (more or less) than a 9/10 team with one "superstar".

Yashasvi Jaiswal will be the next run scoring machine of India. Guy will be face of Indian batting for years to come. He will lead the way in tests and ODI's. Have really high hopes from him. Just need to give him two full domestic seasons and exposure on A tours.

Mark my words. I ll hunt this post down when this happens. Ruturaj Gaikwad. I have never seen a batsman who can play spinners so late. See his batting on youtube. He caresses spinners and then flattens them with inside out shot. He plays so last min that it feels the ball is in wicketkeepers gloves. Hope he gets a chance to show his talent. And one thing else. He has temperment

Have been backing him since last 3 years to come good . Now it seems he is almost ready for short format . I do not see any youngster who has that much maturity in playing a long innings in short format . The secret  for his consistency is the nature of his game . He is someone who  relies on placement and exploiting the gaps( best equipped to succeed consistently in 15-40 overs phase ) and a very strong game vs spin. For me his best use right now will be playing him in at #3 or #4 in 50 overs . People under estimate the worth of a player of his style in MO just because he does not hit those sexy Big sixes. He will match any one even in strike rate if they play 30 balls or more per innings . You need atleast 1 such player in MO to build innings so that team scores consistently in most of the matches . Very ideal  in chasing targets . For me the he can take the role of Virat in 50 overs  at #3 whenever that happens.

Things need further improvement -

1. His game vs movement . Not convinced as of now from whatever little seen. That is why opener role may have to wait a bit .

2. Develop power hitting , hence role in T20 bit hazy .

3. Game vs high pace above chest high balls on the body -  Not in control when he tries to attack such deliveries.

Looking at the potential and focus i am sure he will overcome these quickly.

I punt on this Lambi race ka ghoda to be the batsman scoring maximum hundreds for India among the younger lot in short format .

For longer format , thought Gill would make it by now . But injuries and bad habits have crept in his game due to T20 .

- He was the best player of short pitch bowling as well high pace among the youngsters . Even that part also has deteriorated .

- Thought will be a very very good player of spin the way he handled Rashid Khan - Had great opportunity to show his game in spinning

tracks vs Eng series and current NZ series. Sadly does not have patience to slug it out on difficult pitches .

-  Still not rectified his front foot game against pace .

The one guy who has disappointed me the most in the last 1 year . Had great hopes from him. Main reason T20 .

Wish he works with Dravid and overcomes all the bad habits that have crept in his game. Worrying aspect , still does not admit that         there are weaknesses in his game if we go by his statement post 1 test vs NZ.

Sanju -  You need to relook his game against quality spin.  I cannot see that from Sanju  the way he plays at present.

good observation , i agree. But my view is that Spinners are a Puzzle for some period of time. once a batsman manages to not get out for first 18 balls against a spinner , he gets to understand what that spinner is doing. that has happened with me. i have found myself struggling against a spinner and some how if u dont get out of few overs against that spinner for 1 or 2 overs , things become very simple.

i trust sanju can sort this out.
