India's Next Run Machine ?

Who do you think is going to replace Kohli as the next Batting Superstar? When Sachin made his debut, nobody knew he would go on to score a 100 100s, Virat Kohli surprised everyone and took the world by storm with his century making ability and form displayed in the period of 2013 - 2017. 

 

Similarly I think the next superstar of batting is going to be another dark horse who will slowly creep in and surprise every one with his Run & Century scoring ability. 

 

I think Rituraj Gaikwad is going to be the next Century scoring machine from the country and is going to surprise every one. There's something special about him that I noticed from the first time I ever saw him play. That's just my hunch, you are free to chose your next batting superstar contender.

Was hoping Gill would do that. He still can correct it.  But no batsman shows this imperious batsmanship you see very early at the start of their career. First i thought Agarwal would do. I always had doubts about KL Rahul due to his loose technique.  He has played enough tests. Yet to have a dream run that you saw from yesteryear batting legends. Rohit After 6 years of cricket passed 500 runs in a calendar year (not much to boast of) in 2020. Now 900 plus runs in this year. Shaw also exposed holes in his batsmanship.  I have not seen a more technically weak Indian batting line up in a long time. So i am not going to hedge my bet on any player at this point regardless of how well they play in domestic.

I hope Shubman Gill is able to do this. He has the ingredients and the attitude. He needs to tighten his game in a few areas.

Pessimistic take: None of them. Pitches are more bowling friendly and the batsman are c**p. The next gen of Indian batters could make us long for the likes of rahane.

 

Optimistic take: Sundar, Gill, Shaw, Pant, Tom, Dick, and Harry will become the greatest top 7 in the history of cricket-playing nations in the universe

Interesting choice, he could be tier 1.5 Star like Rohit, Rohit is beast, taking nothing away from him, but Kohli & Sachin are tier 1 Run machines because they excelled in both ODI and Test formats, while Rohit has massively underachieved in Tests. Shreyas will do a  great service to Indian cricket if he can be half as good as Rohit.

how would a youngster ( age <26 )  be able to balance the demands/innovations needed in t20 cricket and still play the exact opposite way in test cricket on sporting pitches?  Consistency will be lost in the process of balancing formats.. when they do well in t20s tend to struggle in tests and vice versa

Every challenge thrown will harness newer talents, next generation of batters are going to adopt a hybrid model of batsmanship. Some might go Joe root way, some may go AB devilliers way, the next generation of batters are going to be the ones who will excel in all formats. That's evolution.

Mark my words. I ll hunt this post down when this happens. Ruturaj Gaikwad. I have never seen a batsman who can play spinners so late. See his batting on youtube. He caresses spinners and then flattens them with inside out shot. He plays so last min that it feels the ball is in wicketkeepers gloves. Hope he gets a chance to show his talent. And one thing else. He has temperment

Kohli was 20 and Sachin 16 when they made their debuts...

 

Run machine maybe, but batting superstar I think the time has passed.

 

Gill has potential.

I think with so much analysis already...  It will have to someone really special who will click in all 3 formats.  Maybe Gaikwad..  He has the ingredients to be successful in all 3 formats.

The contenders are :-

 

Rishabh Pant 

Shubhman Gill

Prithvi Shaw

Yashasvi Jaiswal

Devdutt Paddikal

Rituraj Gaekwad

 

However, among these, Rishabh Pant  is definitely not the answer. He is not the most technically perfect batsman in the Indian team and has clear flaws against the moving ball. His game also is such that being a wicket keeper, he will more likely play those counter attacking knocks at inconsistent rate rather than being a run matchine at consistent rate.

 

Prithvi Shaw looks more of a mix of Sehwag and Rohit, a player who has glaring technical deficiency and has a huge gap between bat and pad. He will most likely be a Bradman at home but doubt he would be any better than Viru overseas.

 

Paddikal also looks more of a flamboyant LOI type batsman with lack of gears and very much like a Shikhar Dhawan. He doesn't have a huge FC stat to make a strong case either.

 

Gaekwad is a magnificent player of spin but his challenge will be same, against pace in overseas conditions.

 

Jaiswal, not too sure of him. 

 

That leaves us with Shubman Gill, who probably look the closest to anything you can get of Sachin Tendulkar or Virat Kohli. But does he have that hunger and will it stay for long enough? That is the real question.

A pure Test match batsman should be able to do. If he is going to play IPL/ODI/T20 everything forget about it. It is incredible Kohli was able to achieve 50 average in all 3 formats.

Shreyas iyer will be our most consistent player, he can succeed king Kohli.
