Trichromatic Posted January 8, 2022 Posted January 8, 2022 Australian team of 2000-2007 can be considered as time when they were considered as greatest team of all time. They lost test matches during this phase, they lost test series also. However was there any match in which they outplayed or dominated by opposition?
Trichromatic Posted January 8, 2022 Author Posted January 8, 2022 Did they lose first test of any series?
nevada Posted January 8, 2022 Posted January 8, 2022 It was a match they won, but the Adelaide test of 2006 was an interesting one. The Aussies were outplayed in the beginning of the match. England played very well for the first couple of days, even declaring their innings at 550+. Collingwood scored a double century and Pietersen scored a 150. After a loss in the first test, it seemed the English were back on track to keep the series competitive. The Aussies replied with a big total of their own and the match seemed destined for a draw as it headed to day 5. England had to bat out day 5 on a pitch where bowlers didn't seem to have much assistance. But Warne had other ideas. He sparked a collapse and a shocked Collingwood watched in horror as one after the other, his partners at the other end got themselves out. He stonewalled for a long time but one mistake he did was playing for time and forgetting to put more runs on the scoreboard. It was like he was paralyzed with fear watching the destruction at the other end. If he had scored 20 more runs, the Aussies might have had a tougher time of chasing down the target in the 4th innings. They had a few hiccups, but chased it down to seal a famous win. That game must have destroyed England's will because they lost the remaining games as well for a clean sweep. Stan AF and neel roy 1 1
Mariyam Posted January 8, 2022 Posted January 8, 2022 My 0.02$, The title is incorrect. The concept of Peak years/ golden generation is not true for a team like Australia ( or India post the 2000s), where they have lots of resources to place a competitive XI on the field. All their teams are greats, to varying degrees. Teams like the West Indies or Pakistan have had peak years/ golden generations. Vijy, Lord and zen 3

Indian team was far more dominant in Sydney test with a lead over 200+ nevada 1
vvvslaxman Posted January 8, 2022 Posted January 8, 2022 I wouldn't say outplayed. But they have lost matches after dominating the same match. Eden Gardens, Adelaide Test, The one where Australia declared in both innings and left England a meagre 315 total to chase. They pulled it off.

If they wouldn't have given follow on at eden gardens they would have easily won test match. Same with Leeds where they declared with 6 wickets in hand & England chased it down. Adelaide test too they were trying to prove their domination by scoring quick and getting result quickly but collapsed in next innings. Clarke tried similar in this match and england almost chased it down as well.

The Aussies prefer to take the option which guarantees a result, even if there is a chance of it not going in their favour. Sgattick10 1
AKane Posted January 9, 2022 Posted January 9, 2022 Not the 2000-2007 Aussies but the 1974-76 Aussies who clobbered the WI 5-1 at home in 1975-76..... the one test they lost was at Perth.... Roy Fredericks scored a terrific 169, Lloyd 149 and Andy Roberts claimed 7/54 in 2nd Innings. WI won the match by an Innings and 87 runs. After that match Jeff Thomson turned on the pure pace and the WI were routed rest of the series. Somebody wrote about Thomson "He showed the world that he and not this man Roberts or his teammate Liillee or this new fellow Holding but he(Thomson) was the fastest bowler in the world". Similarly in 2007/8 after winning the first 2 tests ( One of the Bucknor fame ) Australia lost at the same venue Perth against India by 72 runs.... but they were 253/8 and really one big 9th wicket partnership got them closer - but it was a comprehensive win.

Jay Posted January 9, 2022 Posted January 9, 2022 (edited) Got outplayed by Fleming team in 2000 in Australia. Series drawn 1 - 1. Australia of those years are wildly overrated on non flat wickets. Wildly. Other teams poor fitness levels is the only reason why the so called mighty Aussies were able dominate for 7 long years. Even then it was fraught with questionable wins based on poor umpiring, no drs etc. Edited January 9, 2022 by Jay

I meant bonds kiwi team**. Not bond alone. He did **** actually in that series. Averaged like 90 +. But the team did well. They should have won test1 and and test 3. Both draws. Gilly was captain (Waugh was injured) and he made a challenging declaration setting a target of 315 in about 95 overs. Butcher played innings of his life against peak McGrath/Warne.I wouldn't call this overconfidence, but rather Gilly's hand was forced to make a play due to the rain and Aussies were gunning for a rare away 5-0 whitewash.

That 1975-76 WI team did not have 4 fast bowlers. They just had Holding and Roberts. WI had last laugh against Australia and Greg Chappell when they kept hammering them for more than decade from 1979.They pounded Greg Chappell into submission in 1979 series when he could hardly score a run against 4 pronged pace attack.
