deepdynamo
Indian ODI team is in doldrums. World Cup is just 18 months away. Don't have any impact fast bowlers ( yes, even Bumrah has regressed) Don't have any spinners ( Kulcha are out and Ashwin/Jadeja are not effective either) Our only hope is a powerful top 6 ( or 7) to win the cup. Our last world cup winning team has Raina coming in at No.7 ( Yuvi, Sehwag and Raina could bowl) England 2019 world cup triumph was based on their powerful batting with Moeen coming at No. 7 So, what should be a powerful top 6 that can bring us the cup? Believe these are the 9 candidates for the top 6 spots. Also, once identified we should give the top 6 all remaining matches at their respective positions.Openers: Rohit Dhawan Shaw ( outside chance only)Middle Order: Kohli Rahul ( high strike rate version of KL) Sky Pant Iyer Kishan ( outside chance only) Also, should pick atleast 2 ( or even 3) all rounders to strengthen the lower order further., Lower Middle Order/Allrounders: Jadeja Hardik Shardul Deepak Chahar Only worry is the musical chairs in position 4 to 8 with the middle order not settling at all and players not settling in to their role and positions. ( like what happened in 2019 WC) Link to comment

S Iyer as the MO reserve. Kishan the WK reserve. Shami and Mavi as quicks reserves Sundar/Ashwin/Jadeja as spin AR backups. Rotate and play a combination of this squad from now till the WC to tune up for the big event. The lineup looks solid if SKY plays but then there won't be a fifth sixth bowler. Link to comment
deepdynamo
I think most are overlooking Dhawan and putting in Shaw over him. But most likely Dhawan is locked in for the opener role because a) He is TM favourite 2) He is a left hander 3) He is a clutch tournament player 4) He has a better strike rate in first 10 overs than Rohit Other position which is unclear as of now is No. 6. Sky is the current favorite as of now. Don't want V Iyer at No. 6 just because he bowls a bit. My prefer Top 7 which I believe can bring in the cup if backed for all ODI from hereon in. Just tell these guys clearly that they are locked in from now on and should take care of their fitness. Dhawan Rohit Kohli Rahul Pant Sky Pandya + 4 bowlers/Allrounders Backups will be Shaw/Ruturaj for opening spot and Iyer/Kishan for middle order. Link to comment
deepdynamo
5 minutes ago, sarchasm said: Yes Dhawan is TM favorite but he's neither clutch nor a player with meaningfully higher SR in power plays. Since Rohit is guaranteed, India need someone who can be ballistic from ball one and strike at 150 in PP overs. Dhawan is not that batsman, nor is he good enough to put up monster scores once set like this series showed. Therefore the TM would be wise to plan a contingency, at the very least, and have Shaw in their plans. Also, SKY might be the current favorite but VIyer is noob who's here the old school way - piled up runs everywhere. Yes his bowling isn't hugely impressive but his batting might be, especially in that role where India lack the cattle. So even if SKY is doing well, VIyer should get chances and be in the mix for WC. Extra depth is what teams need to succeed over long periods. Fair analysis on Dhawan. But you can't be half-hearted going in WC preparation. If Shaw is in plans, he should get atleast 10-12 ODIs on a trot. If you do that and then go back to Dhawan then it messes up further. One solution is to give permanent opener role to Dhawan in ODIs and Shaw in T20s that way Shaw and Dhawan will get sufficient game time. If the selectors want to move away from Dhawan entirely, now is the time. You can't drop him closer to the world cup having invested on him for many games. Other dark horse for openers slot are Gaikwad and Gill. If they are in plans of TM ( which I believe they are not presently) then they shouldn't get picked randomly for any upcoming series. Majestic
If Rahane and pujaara have given consistent run like this, won't be surprised that Dhawan also gets a similar run. This means no replacement as opener spot in ODIs coming in recent times. Shaw/Kishan/Ruturaj will have to wait, that's it. Link to comment

deepdynamo
Too many fancy picks coming here. 1) Pant will not open in any situation. He is being tried out at No.4 currently and will be given consistent run. 2) Krunal Pandya - The actor. He is rightfully discarded. 3) Jadeja and Axar can't play in the same team. I will prefer Axar only if we can fit him at No.8. Jadeja though can play at No.6 also. 4) Thakur and Deepak Chahar also can't be in the same XI. Both are good for No.8 slot. sarchasm 1 Link to comment

Jay
Depth style chennai team which could win tbh if players play to their potential. Shaw Rohit Gill Venky iyer pant Pandu Thakur Axar Umran Bumrah Prasidh 7 bowling options. Can bat till 8. Unfortunately we just don't have a 3rd premier bowler who can bat. Link to comment
BlueBlood
No matter what team it is. If KL, Dhawan, Rohit and Kohli are going to hog top 4 then we will lose important clutch games. There is no scenario where we can win pressure games when these "consolidators" put way too much pressure for lower middle order to score quickly in the end whether batting first or chasing. It will work brilliantly with minnows but will fail with others miserably. We have already seen the left arm bowler issue for our batsman is still not resolved, teams will attack us with this weakness again and again. Link to comment

Can have Ruturaj in place of Shaw because he is good against spin. Edited January 25, 2022 by rkt.india Link to comment
