Shreyas Iyer has sealed his spot across all three formats

Recommended Posts

After the inning he played in pink ball test on a wicket that was turning square, it is fair to say that Shreyas Iyer has sealed his place in the 15-man squad and is making a case for a confirmed spot in XI in all three formats. Among the Indian U-30 batsman, only Rahul and Pant were the ones with their spots cemented and now Iyer is third one to get in there.

Furthermore, he has sort of created an impression of himself as someone who relishes batting when team is 3 down at low score and a rescue act is required.

Obviously, the technical deficiencies are still there when he travels overseas but if we have to base our conclusions on a player based on whether he will succeed overseas or not, then from this era, except Kohli and to an extent Pant, no other Indian batsman has an average of even 35 in SENA. To conclude, in Iyer, we are looking at future of Indian cricket as well as a good leader prospect now.

Not in ODIs IMO and even in T20s there is lots of competition. Although he has played brilliantly in the last few innings, this SL attack is so poor that I am finding it difficult to judge the actual quality

Rohit Kolli are struggling against same attack.  Their attack in T20Is was much better than bits n pieces all rounders of Windies.

kohli is struggling, but that's true for him for a while. feels more like rohit, mayank, etc. were playing too casually rather than struggling as such

Yeah feels like it.  Even Pant seems to be in entertainment mode.  Kohli is searching form & is dead serious.   Vihari Iyer are trying to seal their spots.  Iyer seems like is confirmed starter for Edgbaston test now.

There is no point reading into whether he will fail overseas or succeed. All our players have struggled overseas anyways. Rahul averages 28 in SENA, Rohit for so many years was called as home bully, Ashwin has 30 fi-fers overall but none in SENA, Pujara has failed everywhere outside Asia except Australia.

Hence, it all comes down to having the willingness to improve and find ways to succeed overseas. Rahul is outrageously talented but all it took is one ball to get him out and that is why he has an average of 28 there or Rohit for that matter had his first good overseas series at age of 34.

"Because anybody who plays the way he did...it is very attractive batting that he has, the shots that he has. He is a good looking young man. So it all points to the fact that in the next six-eight months he could be the next big thing in Indian cricket," he added.
