AuxiliA Posted September 7, 2022 Posted September 7, 2022 We won 2 of our ICC trophy finals ( 2007 T20 WC, 2013 CT) in similar positions like our recent two loses. We won when 2 runs were required of last 3 balls against Pakistan and Bangladesh in different T20 WCs. These are famous matches on top of my head. There were many more victories like this under Dhoni. We used to be so good at winning tight matches while defending. But off late we are looking tactically clueless in such positions and losing more often than not. Tells you the importance of smart captaincy in white ball cricket. IndianRenegade Posted September 7, 2022 Posted September 7, 2022 I don’t know how much of this is due to poor strategy vs Gulf pitches being b!tches.

Gulf pitches are bitches for sure but that's irrelevant for what I am talking about. Yesterday we gave 2 f**ing byes to lose the match. Had Pant done a Dhoni, we might have taken it to a super over. https://twitter.com/sehan_ismail12/status/1567209012231557121?s=20&t=EuKBJVZEpruRA_Lh0tiL7A Edited September 7, 2022 by AuxiliA raki05 1

Basically, win the toss win the game. But we made some wrong choices. Why was Pant batting this low, what was the need to play Hooda if he didn't bowl, wasn't Axar a better choice? Gambit Posted September 7, 2022 Posted September 7, 2022 MSD is the only captain who's won games in the short format basis pure captaincy compensating for fielding, trundling, tuktuking by others. nitinbwj 1
Nikhil_cric Posted September 7, 2022 Posted September 7, 2022 Dhoni has not defended under lights when conditions changed and became easier for batting like it does in Dubai. Clear example was the World T20 semifinal in 2016 when he could not defend 192 or so
Number Posted September 7, 2022 Posted September 7, 2022 In a long captaincy career there will always be some matches where you win defending and similarly lose defending. We lost while defending 50 runs in 2 overs against Aus in Mohali in 2013. We lost 2011 World cup match against South Africa. Captaincy makes difference but in death overs quality of batting and bowling is the ultimate decider.
Austin 3:!6 Posted September 7, 2022 Posted September 7, 2022 Pant's throw in last ball was atrocious. This is where we miss MSD. Remember his run out in WT20 2016 game against BD?

In the last 28 T20 matches at Dubai, 25 have been won by the team chasing. IPL 2021 Final, India Hong Kong this Asia Cup and NZ Scotland last World T20 were the exception

Remember his run out in WT20 2016 game against BD? I dont have issues with pants throw. I think if dhoni would have been there he migny or might not have broken the stumps by throwing. Actually it was arshdeep who shdnt have thrown. That would have given us a chance. Pant however he threw was not rash and it was picked up by arshdeep. He should have just let them run one and backed him to bowl a yorker and get another one. We did in 2007 t20 wcup against pak. Those dimwitted pakistanis couldnt bloody score 2 off 3 balls..

We should be blowing Bangladesh in and out every time..The situation should not have come to this point if India hadn't been skittled out for 79 against NZ and scoring paltry 140 against Bangladesh, both games playing at home where 9 yr experienced Dhoni did zilch with bat..This match was pure comedy, the credit goes to lack of Brain cell in Bangladeshi batsmen not Dhoni...This is classic Dhoni genius, people forget how average he was and start throwing these random pictures.... adi B 1

putrevus Posted September 7, 2022 Posted September 7, 2022 How did Dhoni do defending 192 in a very winnable semi finals ,how did he do in 2014 finals. Dhoni is fricking reason why we don't have another world t20 cup. Stop it with this nonsense that Dhoni was some great tactician. adi B and Bigg Brother 2

We got 2 wickets in 2 no balls. It was a disaater.. with the start bumrah gave us
putrevus Posted September 7, 2022 Posted September 7, 2022 (edited) Dhoni won two trophies CT 2013 and 2007 t20 world cup purely on opposition not able to handle the pressure and luck. He got a tailor made pitch for 2013 finals. Dhoni might be the best captain in history when pitches assist spinners and other same hand he might be worst captain when he has to depend on fast bowlers. 2015 Semifinals is prime example, he let Johnson go beserk and looked clueless ,which converted a chasable target to impossible target. I forgot to add another captain Dhoni's gem promoting Jadeja over Yuvraj in one of cruicial world t20 matches and not even qualifying for knockouts. Edited September 7, 2022 by putrevus

Can we .. so end of day it boils fown to individual players keeping their head and not bowling no balls or wides like bhuvi did. If those two wides were not there arshdeep would have defended 9 instead of 7..
vvvslaxman Posted September 7, 2022 Posted September 7, 2022 Only good thing about Dhoni is he is a decent captain for spinners. When it comes to handling pace he is more of the same. Having said that it is shocking how India did not expect Srilankans would run for a bye. THat was so basic.

But problem is Dhoni never got any flak for all the losses where his captaincy played a much more bigger role in losses. This thread proves that point. Rohit's captaincy was amateurish in both losses.
