Match-ups are important - Rahul Dravid on Axar bowling just one over

In Axar's case if they implement the theory 90% he won't complete the quota at Perth. Only exception is he somehow picks a wicket

Chahal won't either.

Maybe they'd pick just one spinner Ashwin.

Match up has limited utility as it depends upon form on the day. The captain should be smart enough to understand what can challenge a batsman and which bowler is bowling well. Consider the match situation and conditions. And then decide accordingly.

This issue is that most folks are not equipped to decipher data (as it should be), while the data guys with the team will advertise it as the best thing since the slice bread.

They are restricting a players potential by using this match up argument.

What match up would you use aginst V Sehwag for example, he would destroy any spinner.

Similrly a spinner could not be just restricted to bowling either to right handed or left handed. If he is a good spinner he should be able to bowl to both.

You would just use Nathan Bracken against Veeru and be done with it.

he is right , it was stupid to bowl SLA to both set left handers who can hit sixes easily that to on a midget ground

SA is a left hand dominant side in MO...  Stupid idea to play a left arm spinner vs them in the first place.

I hope we don't feed them any in WC.

That's where Bishnoi was so versatile.  His record in keeping lefties quiet is so good & equally better vs Right handers

Especially with short straight boundaries. If you look at Perth stadium straight boundary size same as Indore stadium. Only the side boundaries are longer.

he was the only all rounder, other all rounder on bench was shahbaz another SLA . We nyways were one batsman short yesterday

U can play bishnoi in place of ashwin not axar . These are prep games so good if u put ur player against the wall now. Axar needs to player everygame before the Wc

Bishnoi if anything is not versatile and playing him for lefties, well we already played ashwin for that .  No point giving game time to bishnoi if he is not in 15 just for bilateral game which is irrelevant

Axar doesn't has to play as simple as that vs SA.  You can have Hooda in there as a 6th bowler with Hardik fit.  That's what he was being picked for right.  Axar won't bowl much vs SA anyways going by Dravid's logic.  Totally fine with him playing a bilateral

Chances of axar in XI are more higher hooda in most games , with hooda fitness axar is pretty much a lock in XI.

Axar will bowl at perth coz of square boundaries. This was a midget ground. In aus u can use spinners to make batsman target the longer side. Dravid logic is correct coz it takes matchups , conditions in mind. Yesterday ground made no sense to use him specially when we had so many bowling options

We might see Ashwin and all pacers v SA.

Axar is a very tempting option as he offers strong PP value and is now the only left hander in side. I dont think axar is gonna get dropped. SA still do have bavuma, markram, stubbs, pretorius  in lineup.

Teams mix right left batsman so spinner bowling opp turns are always handy.

One bad over can cost a lot. Pooran smacked him for 3 sixes in 4 balls.  His ER vs teams with lefties is on the higher side.  England/SA/Windies.  His best bet is against predominantly right handed side Australia. His all round skills in T20 is yet to be proven. His ODI 50 against Windies shouldn't be used to judge his T20 skills where you have little time to tee off. Even in one dayers he doesn't have the greatest record against SA with bat or ball. Not enough sample yet.

That can happen to anyone , its t20 and evryone gets hit

He currently is our best options and u cant hide ur best options unless u have enough options on the day. Jaddu was even more terrible against lefties.....kis kis ko chupaoge.

Pooran plays spin well so for axar he is an unfavourable matchup, my concerns starts if a favourable matchup starts to smoke a bowler like when dhoni did who was a righty and use to struggle against SLA.

About his batting - again not the strongest point but he is a better bowler and hooda is a better batsman. Choice to make but hooda is good at a certain spot which is not avl . If axar has issue against certain length so does hooda . In such case ill go for the better bowler.

Coming to SA game use him as 6th bolwer and mostly against right handers. And if need arises against a leftie tell him make batsman hit on square sides. His control is good so u can trust him more then hooda

bhai logic and understanding is too much to expect from most 'scoreboard' and outcome based 'analysts'.

Good to see him admitting that they are actually using a data driven approach especially for t20s. The idea to not use him when Qdk and rossouw were batting was the correct one though he could have come in later to get at least one more over in.

I think they should apply for team selection too. Infact squad selection. India just has to beat one of the two teams (SA or Pakistan ) assuming we beat other teams. Given the issues of Pak batters against bounce not having another hit the deck bowler is perplexing.  Arshdeep, Harshal, Bhuvi, Chahar none of them fall under that category. Only option we have is Pandya (who is inconsistent) and Siraj (we don't know whether he will play).

One RHB on crease is enough. Problem was Ashwin couldn't get them out too.

Ashwin eats LHB for lunch in test cricket  but he does not have the same effect in t20s. If Ashwin got even one guy out then Axar would have bowled more overs.

He was brought back out of wilderness. Not the same offie we saw 6 years back. He still can have his way on slightly drier tracks.
