Dravid on Umran a couple of months back ....

India head coach Rahul Dravid spoke about the chances of Umran's potential debut in the South Africa series.

"Obviously, he is learning. He is a young boy and he is getting better, improving. The more he is able to play, the better he is going to get. From our perspective, (we are) very happy to have someone like him in the mix. We have to see how much playing time we can give him, we need to be realistic, we have a large squad, it is not possible to give everyone playing XI time.

Seems like he is not really differentiating between a 150 k pacer and other pacers at his disposal.

Dravid thought he and Sehwag are same kind of batsmen

Listening/reading through Dravid’s interviews, I get the impression that he’s completely delusional or fixated with some strange ideas that he seems to be drawing from the data that’s thrown at him.

Someone needs to tell him that he’s not some ‘rocket scientist’ or a rockstar quant (doesn’t matter) and regardless these numbers/data should be taken in context. With the kind of volatility and changing regimes we see these days, it is extremely difficult to predict things with any accuracy in fields like sports and markets. Obviously some common sense themes should not be ignored. I think he should rather focus on working with players who have shown potential in fine tuning their skills.

You hit the nail on the head at least 5 times in that post.

That's exactly what he is doing.

People like you always pounce upon low performance and unleash their readymade wrath on rookies like him moment they see one

He will always have nerves while debuting,he even consistently clocked 150+ on 5kph lesser speed guns in Irani trophy

IPL speed guns are the most accurate speed measuring devices on play in modern cricket which is at par with ICC events used guns

There's no wrath here. You have completely misunderstood my intentions.

If they were going to give him a consistent run regardless of performance I would have been ok with that provided he improved by the time of the World Cup.

The TM made a decision not to play him in England as they were probably looking to win in the short term and they won 4 bilateral series after that.

Now that they have taken that decision,  it would be incredibly foolish of them to throw him in now when he has not had enough games and if he gets smashed,  his career trajectory will fall off after that.

But that's the point isn't it. You win 4 bilaterals and praise Rohit Sharma as the most successful captain ever.

Only to have him still not figure out what team and what bowlers to play in WC T20. Last time too they did the same stupid thing, they had Varun "the mystery spinner" thrown at the wolves in the Pak game and conveniently dropped him and brought back Ashwin by the time the series was a forgone conclusion.

If they had bet on Varun, they should have given him more opportunities in international level. They didn't.

Same thing will happen with Umran also. He will not be given chances in easy bilateral tournaments and suddenly thrown into high pressure situations and discarded if he fails once.

Even the Ireland series he was getting better and better with every match. He was expensive but he was mastering yorkers etc.

Suddenly he was dropped and nowhere to be seen. Now they have a sudden interest in him again to take him to Aus last minute.

Avesh Khan is also an example here. If they truly believed in his skills why was he suddenly dropped before the WT20? You either believe in a player and live and die by your decision or you play by experience. You cannot have it both ways - this is why our results are so pathetic once the team facing us is of high quality and hunger to win.

This to me shows that Rohit Sharma and TM want to win bilaterals for stat padding and when it truly matters in key world tournaments they know they made a mistake and start panicking last minute.

This is not a new thing. Whenever we lost against SENA countries BADLY or ICC tournaments in the past, the board would magically put SL, Bang or WI home series (these boards were desperate for cash and accepted in short notice). This is how Rohit Sharma scored that 264 against a hapless Sri Lanka.

Since the past 8-10 years fans have been getting tricked like this and people STILL fall for this scam of putting bilaterals to cover up massive under performance in big tournaments.

Thankfully there's IPL so Umran, Varun and players like them can make some money and retire in peace. There's some justice to them in that sense.

Nothing to disagree with here. I will just add a bit to this. BCCI are certainly at fault and their lack of planning even in late 2018 fir the 2019 world cup was shocking considering that the likes of ECB had been planning meticulously for 4 years.

However, I do sympathise with the current TM for one reason only and that is the pathetic scheduling by ICC for ICC events.  Having 2 T20 World cups within 12 months of each other is not a lot of time to develop players .

The world Cups should always be 4 years apart do that teams can balance between developing players and getting some bilateral wins under their belt as well before the tournament

yes with such limited time u can develop a limited set of players and u have to take punts keeping in mind that u just have 6 months to an year so choose player who can develop in that time

Development also means letting a player go through failure and sticking to it which they did with Avesh and i think wanted to do more but with limited time they had to take a final call on him ,

Umran-kuldeep cud not have been developed in such short period coz in their case it was hardly six months from Wc coz they are Raw at domestic level too .In case of kuldeep his own IPL franchise wasnt ready to risk it, Most here actually know and agree that they currently arent ready but reality is they wudnt have been even ready in 6 months too . Selectors did make them play A games as much as they can. They need atleast 2 yrs , u can start backing them post this Wc since ull have 2 yrs before 2024 Wc

This is BS and you know it.

Tim David was picked over Carey and other players due to his raw potential. Even if he fails as he has, Australia has stuck with him.

Pak has brought in Khusdil, Nawaz, Iftikhar etc.

ENG has done the same with Harry Brook, Salt, Duckett, Gleeson, Luke Wood etc.

Even Bangladesh and West Indies have let go of their seniors in investing in new talent.

The point is you need to give opportunities in bilateral tournaments and then nurture talent for important tournaments. When you let people like Ashwin still linger around in T20 format as if there are ZERO other options. When you have KL Rahul and Kohli given 10 series to get back to form but not given a single one to youngsters, it shows greed and mindset of thinking Indian fans are stupid and will forget quickly once a new bilateral series is played.

This was proven by Kohli's 100 against AFG where he was dropped at 35 odd runs. People celebrated as if he's won the world cup. But forget that AFG had back to back games in 2 days and were spent and the tournament was done already.

THIS is what I mean by stat padding. Kohli, Rohit and Rahul had no business playing that AFG game to pad their stats. You give bench strength options in dead rubber games or they will never be ready

Yea. I don't believe in experience in T20. It is only like 4 overs of bowling. 120 balls share by mostly 5 or 6 batsmen. That is like 20 balls per batsmen.  Only way you can implement this is by having a completely new team devoid of seniors and letting them play. They almost did in the recent ODI series. But Dhawan is still hanging around.

No tim david wasnt picked over carrey , carrey is a keeper

If it was so much about potential where is cameron green , nathan ellis , riley meredith in aussie squad ?? Why finch ??

Luke wood is not in the side

Gleeson is just standby

Duckett not in side

Just wondering what is jordon doing instead of wood if it was about introducing youngster

Bang and wi are in mess when it comes to this format .Absolute mess

So when will the main squad play ?? Or they ll wake up from cold n play Wc

When will the team gel up and understand team dynamic of playing with that group

you are hopeless. Let's see how Rohit, KL and Kohli play this WT20.

I am sure you will come running throwing stats at dead rubber games.

If Top 3 prove me wrong I will personally apologize here. But if they fail, will you stop with the BS of stats once and for all?

That's my open challenge to you.

Already Dravid is making statements like "we need luck on our side to win in T20" to pacify people like you. I WANT RESULTS NOT EXCUSES.

India is not going to win even if they play well. India is an imbalanced T20 side. Aging players with weaknesses, trundlers, hopeless depth.   If India needs to win world T20 you need bowling to step up and needs batting depth. Every time INdia won a trophy it was the bowling, depth, multi skilled players 1983 world cup, 1985 benson & hedges,  2007 world cup, 2011 world cup.  This team is anything but that.  In a world cup event even top sides slip up. But you need depth to bail you out when things go wrong.  2016 world T20  Chasing 155/9   West Indies 11/3. They lost Gayle, Simmons, Charles. All big guns gone.  They went on to win.  Because they had Sammy coming in at 7 and Brathwhite coming in at 8 followed by Ramdin at 9. Even after a massive collapse they were able to turn things around. Sure they failed many times. But your team should be good enough to turn things around.

Correct.

Basically go into every game with just 3-4 players and thats it. The rest are passengers.

Who's fault is it?

Isn't it not Rohit Sharma and Dravid's fault?

Ganguly is already sacked for non-performance. Kohli already lost captaincy for non-performance.

Why is Rohit and Dravid immune to it?

This has been an issue for a very long time. Everyone thought Pandya would be the solution. That guy kept getting injured. Then Vijay Shankar who  was mediocre.  Shivam Dube another mediocre all rounder. India could never unearth medium pace all rounder like Stoinis, CDG, Marsh, Pretorious.  Venky Iyer was the next in line. He can bowl an over or two and play down the order. Should have been given a chance. Inexplicably binned once Pandya returned.  Rohit has just assumed captaincy. He didn't even captain world T20.  INdia had 8 openers in recent times. SO he is trying something unlike Kohli. Did lot of experimentation.  Under Rohit  India has played 45 T20s won 35, Played 13 ODIs won 10, Played 2 tests won 2. This is inspite of some experimentation. Why would they change him over a stupid Asia cup which he has already won before. India lost several players due to injury in recent times. Especially when you lose someone like Bumrah. I am no fan of oldies playing either. But at this point not many are good enough. Pant can't even keep his spot. Shreyas Iyer other option can't play T20. Only option is Pandya who gets injured every now and then. That leaves us with KL Rahul which nobody wants. Bumrah misses 70% of the games. So you will be left with Bhuvi as captain who you don't want either.  Every team has flaws. Finch doesn't deserve a spot. But he captains. Kane williamson doesn't deserve a spot. But he captains.

His pace was nothing like it was in the IPL . Always suspected that IPL speed guns were inflated.

Anyway, even consistent 140 + is a big asset in Australia and an option we don't have . That pace would have been useful in the middle overs and at the death. Shame his control is not that good.

can you provide any evidence for your claim ?

it’s not possible to bowl 150+ in every game in every condition in every ground. I can bet that if he bowls in we in Aus with full support the guy will breach 155.

Through the years multiple international fast bowlers have had similar speeds in IPL and in LOI ( esp t20).

Don't understand the excessive hype around this guy. Let him play at least one series against Aus or Eng before calling for his selection in a WC.

He can bully domestic batters in IPL with his raw pace but that alone won't work against SENA batsmen, who face equally fast but much taller pacers than him.

Siraj has a proven record against top teams and should be selected over him as of now.

If i recall, he played 2 games against Ireland and 1 against Eng this year.    Got smashed at more than 11 per over each time.  And bowled lots of wides and no balls in every game.   He is not a finished product as of now.  Maybe he will improve as he is still very young.

He is not just raw pace, he is reasonably accurate and has decent control executing yorkers. With this pace he gets a bit of reverse as well and is particularly useful with the old ball.
Ofcourse, he's not that experienced so often tries multiple deliveries to get wickets instead of sticking to one stock ball and in that process do leak runs, but that can be improved; important part is that he has mentality of going for wickets.
He surprised Miller as well in the IPL with his rapid pace and apart from Livingstone I don't remember any other batter who was playing him comfortably, and you know very well how good Miller is against the pace bowlers and trundlers.

Umran and the other fast bowlers like him deserves a run in the side as well instead of trundlers like Bhuvi, Harshal who automatically are first choice despite being mediocre at the international level for years.

Regarding Siraj, well the same TM was reluctant to give him opportunities in red ball cricket (which was his best format) and whatever chances he got is again due to injuries of main players, and when we can give Avesh chances after chances based on his IPL tukka performance (where even Undakut was a champion for couple of seasons), why not try Umran concistently for 10 odd matches, considering the fact that Umran performed better than Avesh in IPL.

150-155+ always creates hype
Sucess or failure depends on number of games he plays on international stage
What did we achieve with so many overaged trundlers, readymades aren't common,if he's bad we will move on from him not untill he's given fair share of matches to prove his mettle, obviously

I hate the current trundlers too but two wrongs don't make it right..

I am all for giving him consistent chances in bilaterals. But it's ludicrous to put him directly into the WC squad. Let him perform in at least one bilateral series first. That's my point.
