Why are Indian squad selections so random?

the problem what you select is at the same level what you didn't select.  They have to pull away from the pack very fast like Kohli did.  So far Gill has done a good job this year. So has Samson.  India has the ability to field two separate batting line up. Bowling is where probably we will lose as we can't field two separate bowling units.

I don't see any issue in playing Hooda or giving chance to a wider pool of players but benching Samson after just own game is too much.

Guess right now India has a pool of 30 players in white ball cricket which is too much.  

 

Ideally it should be 20 players and further pruned to 15 for tournaments.

It will be a 15 man squad and 3 reserves. Only one all rounder can be a backup in 15 man squad. In Asia, we can play Sundar at 6 or 7 both so he makes up for either Pandya or Jadeja( in case of any injury).

Yes which should allow us to play SKY at 6 instead of KLR/Iyer.

 

But anyways won't go that far, these are not official decisions you make but change based on the game situation.

 

One thing that they can definitely do now is ensure they back Sundar over Hooda and Axar. I don't want to see Axar getting all games in Bangladesh series while Sundar is backup there.

Replace a pacer with Kuldeep on gripping tracks. 

 

This gives us the option of 3 proper fast bowlers and a swing bowler cum allrounder. Plus 2 spinners which can become 3 on gripping tracks. 

 

We can even have this batting if Hardik is present

Can Axar Patel or even Ravindra Jadeja ever play a scoop shot like this? Tells us about the kind of talent this guy is. He is a better all rounder talent than even Pandya.

Hardik Pandya is a given at no.6 in ODIs and if he is fit and bowling then there is no question on his place. 

 

In case he gets injured you have Washington Sundar who has got good temperament, improved his range of shots and seems to have perfected in timing the ball well too. He is your backup for Pandya. There is no need for Hooda just for the sake of getting the balance right in today's game.

 

Moreover, you will also have Jadeja at 7 and Axar Patel is also there as backup and he is in Bangladesh squad. So, what is the need of trying Deepak Hooda here in New Zealand? Why not go with six batsman, analyse them after this series (3 games) and then make decision on which all players you will move forward?

 

Now, what they have done is rejected Samson unfairly after first game, he isn't in Bangladesh squad also and then the home series vs other teams will start where the main players will be there. So, I don't see Samson getting chances anytime in recent future in ODI format. Only if Rahul/Pant get injured or decide to rest again in ODI bilaterals for the orange Cup race in IPL and the home series vs Australia, Samson has a chance but come the World Cup they will go back to Rahul/Pant again.

 

What we need is to strengthen the pool of 15 players that will go into the World Cup and make them world class rather than trying to give everyone games and instead increase the count to 30 good players.

 

Samson is being treated unfairly here.He should have played all t20s also.
