Have we wasted Gill-Shaw?

It's one-half (Shaw) isn't even in contention. True that fitness was a concern, but isn't it partially the responsibility of NCA and medical staff to help him with it. Back in 2019, Kohli said a lot of good things, and then dropped him after a failure.

Gill played 3 ODIs before this year. That's shame. He has been in an out of the test team but that's ok. He still made his test debut at right time. He is likely to play the next WC but as a greenhorn. Would have been better if he started from the first series after '19.

No , they still have time but like any young batsmen they will have struggles, they need to fight thru their issues.

if they cannot overcome their weaknesses then it is on them. They have been getting chances.

I am against giving chances to players in all formats without them needing to prove themselves.

what chance Shaw has got?

Gill only started getting consistent run since Dravid took over and scored ton last game.

Backing talented played through their struggles is important too.

See Shaw looked so bad in Australia that it was very hard to give him chances after that tour.

Shaw should open in white ball cricket and establish himself as opener in at least one format.

Gill’s injury brought Rahul back after ICC test finals. Gill should be the opener for Australia series too. Rahul should be gone.

After pairing up with Kela, Gill is batting like him.Looks like it is infectious. Either that or Rahul Drawit provided instructions to survive for 50 overs. If he continues batting like this he may never have a meaningful Test career.

you mean one game where we got 36-9? Everyone except Kohli first innings looked bad in that.

Why take risks when tuk tuk is appreciated more.

Young guys are always afraid to take different approach. Pant is good in that regard.

In some of the first class matches 4th innings can get very trick. Selectors have to keep an eye on guys who produce goods in tricky situation not just the first innings century makers.

Yeah I wish Dhongi would've dropped that dead weight fly swatter midway through the tour of Eng 2014, at least we wouldn't have been humiliated so many times over there since then

gill has flattered to deceive in tests (I thought he'd have 40+ avg by now) so far, but is still young. shaw was discarded after one bad performance in Aus. Even in NZ - on some of the greenest pitches ever - he did better than some seniors.

now, he is completely burnt out and unmotivated and not even doing well in ranjis

Shaw has the right mindset (and ability) to open in ODIs, T20s. Pity we are backing the finished Dhawan and perennial loser Kela in those formats as openers.

don't forget the no. 3 loser in ODIs too, who only scores 100s on the flattest of tracks nowadays.

Shaw is the white ball opener that Indian team needs to inject some momentum and aggression at the top.  Gill is the perfect #3, but since that spot is currently occupied by Farmhouse Maharaja, he's bumping Shaw out and contending as opener.

I know Shaw is no messiah - has his own share of issues, but they are all solvable, manageable.  We are indeed wasting the likes of Shaw, Samson, Gill.  I fear Sundar will be next.

Textbook case of how not to manage top shelf talent in sports.  This guy was the heir to Veeru, and BCCI and Indian team "think tank" have wreaked havoc on his mindset, his self-belief and temperament.

BCCI and TM are looking to give the "shaw treatment" to several others, and destroy their careers too. next in line - kuldeep yadav and washy sundar

Both are just 23, both were drafted too early in Ind team just after U -19 success. Any-one will have up and downs in their path.

Both have some short-comings in their game which can be sorted if proper guidance is provided. Its not all lost and If Shaw is unable to find motivation then their are bigger problems, a place where there are 38 domestic teams, not every1 will be selected few will miss-out even if they are v.good and few may be overlooked and leap-frogged by/for some1 else. The point should be to keep going.

With such a big pool of players to select from Up-coming players have to out-perform others and have to be a standout performers, 1 good season and few average seasons will not do.The have to carve out their places in Ind. Intl. like SKY did in T20s.

And again Ind selection is a mess, picking player in one format owing to success in some different format, endless favours and support for some and being antagonistic for others have been a bigger problem in Ind Cricket for a while.
