Am I the only one reluctant to watch India when KL is in the playing XI ? Averages less than 35 in 45 tests. Is he Brijesh Patel’s karnataka quota guy ?

It time to start appreciating KL' s talent out of the cricket field, it's pretty evident he has none inside the field but how well this man manages to be in the team despite non performance and despite calls from everyone for him to dropped. Either he has some very powerful godfather we aren't aware of or he has some dirt on someone very powerful within the BCCI or a BJP politician, that his man just hangs on no watter what. So 3 cheers to KL who might end up playing 100 test matches for India is will likely average less than 30 by then.

It's of course not just about KL taking up space that someone else deserves. It's the culture of entitlement that is being perpetuated. Tomorrow this very same structure would have the likes of Pant and Gill etc stick around beyond their sell-by date.

That culture of entitlement has existed long before KL.

Kapil Dev played long after his sell by date just to break Hadlees record.

Tendulkar continued to play Odis much after 2011 WC, when he had no business to. But he wanted his 100th 100 and all avenues for that. He got it in a match where he scored it at a well below par strike rate. We lost the match to Bangla and did not even qualify for Asia cup  finals.

Dhoni- we know the story.

Only difference is above names are legends of Indian cricket. KL is a dud.

The only thing which explains his continuous selection despite his failures is the BJP Karnataka quota. Life seems so unfair when a proven failure is getting so many chances especially in a country like India where the competition is extremely high.  Why is he getting a Legend like treatment is not understood.

Gavaskar on KL:

"He doesn't know whether to go back or come forward. With KL Rahul, he takes his front foot across and the ball is turning into you, you have to play with a straight bat but when you take your front foot across like that you are left with no choice but to play with an angled bat. The chances of you missing the ball are more. Rohit takes the front foot away, so he allows the bat to come around and play the ball in front of the pad. That's why you see Rohit Sharma look so secure and why Rahul looks tentative,"

Waugh: "I think KL Rahul has just to back himself a little bit. He is scared of getting out. You cannot bat that way, you've got to be confident in your own ability. He is just restricting himself. I'd love to see him bat freely and not worry about getting out,"

Manjrekar: "By aggression, I don't mean he defends three balls and looks to hit a six in the fourth. I want him to be able to bat freely like Virat Kohli starts looking from ones and twos from ball one. That's the way you become successful. You have to be proactive. When you are worried about getting out, your natural instincts get shackled.

Exactly. This has become a culture problem where those who get famous, get brand endorsements, have influence, stay on the team despite doing much less than other deserving candidates. These guys don't even play Ranji Trophy these days even if they are not on national duty. If they played in domestic cricket, even regular average bowlers will get them out. It is that bad. The entitlement culture will continue with the next generation picking up from where the current lot left.

Funny thing is that this focus on KL is helping guys like Kohli and Pujara to hide their poor performances. I think that is the reason also they keep one guy who performs even worse in the team so that the focus if off thee other non performers. All 3 of them deserve to be axed. They have been useless for the last 2-3 years.

To be honest, it wasn't that bad during Kapil's days. Yes, he played a little longer, but take a look at his record. His bowling and batting averages were still pretty good during his last few years. It felt long because India was mostly playing home tests where he had little bowling to do as spinners were dominating.

It has gotten much worse over the last 10-15 years. First, it was Sachin who was struggling but still hanging on and then Dhoni took it to the next level. Now Kohli is taking this even one notch higher. How can anyone pick a batsman who hasn't scored a hundred in 3 years and yet comfortably commands a place in the team with nobody even questioning it.

All 3 should be gone. There is no ambiguity there.  They are playing well past their sell by date.  Ashwin has repeatedly mentioned about Sarfraz, Eswaran, Jaiswal in various interviews. He definitely knows bringing them means eliminating these oldies. As a fellow player sharing the dressing room with these guys, he sure knows these guys are done.I definitely want to see how these guys play in the nets against our spinners.

Yep, Sachin is a holy cow here at ICF.

There is lobby against making Ashwin the captain for this very reason. He would kick out these non performing batsmen.
