Lone Wolf Posted June 3, 2023 Posted June 3, 2023 He is closer than ever & only 32 years old. England slated to play around 45 tests in next 3 years alone. Only thing that can stop him if this Bazball destroys his impact & he turns into a cameo player Stan AF 1
nevada Posted June 3, 2023 Posted June 3, 2023 We should recall Sachin. He could outscore the runless Rahane. Stan AF, SandeepMotta, Lone Wolf and 2 others 5

Bigg Brother Posted June 3, 2023 Posted June 3, 2023 Still 4900 runs behind. It's like Rahane's whole career runs. 3 years means he should be scoring 1500+ every year. Cook retired when he wasn't even 35. So, can't say much about Root, although Root is in brilliant form unlike Cook who was scratchy post 2013-14 Ashes. Still, very long way to go..
Stan AF Posted June 3, 2023 Posted June 3, 2023 He can surpass easily if ,& that's a big if if he stays injury free and continues his form Lone Wolf 1
sandeep Posted June 3, 2023 Posted June 3, 2023 These threads keep coming up everytime somebody gets within 4-5k runs, and people blindly extrapolate future performance. Whether its a Ponting, Cook, Root, whoever.

Root is probably second most talented player ever since Sachin to play the game with a flawless technique & vast array of shots. I think he will miss it... But may crack 15k mark. The Bazball in question will be his undoing. I already have seen him miss 2-3 easy tons in Pak NZ & now here. Ashes will be interesting... Obv a Poor Ashes can get to him like it did to Cook when he slumped into a rut Bigg Brother and sage 2

Obv a Poor Ashes can get to him like it did to Cook when he slumped into a rut I think Cook was the most resilient test player I have ever seen. Classic test match player, at 28 he was churning runs like anything, it is scary how his career went downhill when he was only 29 and still ended up scoring 12k runs. Cook had to open in the toughest country to open the batting in test cricket. Root on the other hand has more shots in his armoury but had real conversion issues before 2021 but since then has been able to catch up with Smith in terms of scoring centuries and eventually more runs. I think Root will break the record of Sachin if he goes the Anderson way. No franchise cricket, no LOIs (He is anyway playing Odis only), then he has very good chance. Lone Wolf and raki05 2

He is still doing well and except in Australian conditions, he has churned runs everywhere. I still feel he too will fall short even though he has a better all round game to succeed in his 30s than Cook was which is why he should get to 14k runs for sure.
Majestic Posted June 3, 2023 Posted June 3, 2023 Both Root and Tendulkar are also good 6th bowlers. raki05 and Lone Wolf 2

Could never play Johnson either or Ryan Harris Oz own him like a b---- He also struggles in India anytime we dish out turners. Jaddu and ash did a number after that first test which was flat as. Also thakur has a knack of owning him. He has a habit of getting out to all rounders. Got out to Watson a few times and CDG kept him in check too. He is still well ahead of coolie though. Make no mistake about it.

That Johnson version was terrifying for England & also SA.

He never did. 2016 was. Joke. Flattest pitches od all time. Coolie scored 100s for fun. We won 4 0 btw. We saw his aukad vs India in 2022. He sucked big time outside that first match which was again a flat deck. Even in England he only played well on flat pitches. Any pitch with assistance he got bamboozled by bumrah or shardul.
Jay Posted June 4, 2023 Posted June 4, 2023 Make no mistake he is better and we'll ahead of coolie. Let me make that clear. But he will never be as good as Smith. Way ahead of Kane too. But just not Smith. Infact I would say he is close to sachhu bhai who is a tier below Smith himself.
zen Posted June 4, 2023 Posted June 4, 2023 I am not sure who (apart from mostly quantity focused folks in places like India) would be interested in such “milestones” . 200 tests & 15,9xx runs, who cares! 100 100s (a made up milestone), who cares 43x wickets in 131 tests, who cares … … … I am not sure if even Joe Root cares! Jay and Laaloo 1 1
vvvslaxman Posted June 4, 2023 Posted June 4, 2023 Root may start focusing on T20 cricket in the coming years. Easy money there.

Exactly. Only Indians care about records lol. Like who cares. What matters is who was the better match winner. I am not sure if sacchu bhai is better than root in terms of being a match winner although sacchu dint have the luxury to play with the best Asian fast bowling attack with the likes of bumrah shami ishant and sirsj etc.
