'Money, Arrogance, Ego': Kapil Dev Blasts India Stars, Echoes Sunil Gavaskar's Sentiments

Sunil Gavaskar had earlier said that the current top stars in Indian team have never come to him, seeking help on technical aspects of the game, unlike previous era's players.

 

"Differences come out, the good (thing) about these players...is that they are very confident. Negative point is they think they know everything. I don't know how to put it better than that. But they are confident, but they think 'you don't have to ask anybody'. What we believe is an experienced person can help you," Kapil Dev said on The Week.

 

"Sometimes too much money comes, arrogance comes. These cricketers think they know everything. That's the difference. I would say there are so many cricketers who need help. When Sunil Gavaskar is there, why can't you talk? Where is the ego? There is no ego as such. They feel 'we are good enough'. Maybe they are good enough, but extra help from somebody who has seen 50 seasons of cricket, he knows things. Listening sometimes can change your thought."

 

Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar, one of the most respect names in Indian cricket, had recently that current Indian cricketers have rarely come to him for advice.

"No, no one has come. Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar, VVS Laxman regularly came to me. And they would approach me with a specific problem and you could tell them something which you had observed. I don't have an ego about this, I could go and talk to them but since there are two coaches - Rahul Dravid and Vikram Rathore - so sometimes you hold back since you don't want to confuse them with too much information," Gavaskar recently told The Indian Express.

Why can't Gavaskar go and talk to the players.If he is  at the ground will Dravid, Shastri or any batting coach  will stop him from  talking to the players.

 

It is not ego, they might be shy to talk to Gavaskar.

So do you think it is their ego that Kohli or Sharma are not approaching Gavaskar?

You said they were shy to talk to Gavaskar lol. You genuinely believe that the likes of Rohit and Kohli are shy by any means? 

 

It may not be ego and it's definitely not shyness. They just do not care about improving their techniques at this stage of their careers where they are allowed to mint crores by merely turning up to the field.

Earlier era players didn't have dedicated batting coaches. Now that's no longer the case. If players of today go to Gavaskar, what will Vikram Rathore do?

Rohit has made enough money in IPL , he did not have to do anything but he still tried to become best test player he could be, went back after injury by quarantining and going back to play third and fourth test in Australia 2021.

 

If he was not hungry like Pandya who has not done anything but comes across as Viv Richards he would taken easier route by quitting the tests.

 

 

People here could not wait for him to become Indian captain.

 

 

Approaching a guy like Gavaskar with their inner issues  is not easy.If Gavaskar or any other older ex player see any issues and want to pass on help , they can easily approach Dravid and let him know their thoughts and then setup a meeting.

 

It is very easy to say they have huge egos and money has ruined them.

 

Not everyone is Pandya? I have no idea how he has been made captain without him doing much in 7 years.

Gavaskar is one of the greatest batsman who has played this game. Nothing wrong in approaching him but generation gap exists. 

 

I blame coaches more than players, they should be conducting some camps where they can invite guys like Gavaskar or if he is in commentary team quickly get his input by taking the struggling batsmen with them to talk to him.

That's what I meant. Rathore must organise such meetups or talk to Gavaskar himself and pass on the knowledge.

Seeking help from outside would be infringement on Coach and batting coach roles.

 

Do not think shyness is the reason with IPL and other stuff they are all well connected now, it was the in the past that newer players are in awe of previous players.

They may be more scared of current super stars then the older ones.

"We don't tinker the technique too much" _ This is the standard answer you get. Having said that if a batsman is seriously interested in addressing an issue be it is Mental or Technical nobody can stop you.  DK for a brief period went through a sort of boot camp under Abhishek Nayar's watch. They play in multiple formats. So they carry the flaws along the way as you can get away with flaws in T20 formats. I don't say they are not working in the background. They can very well be doing that. But repetitive mistakes from some players make me wonder whether they try hard enough.
