yeah but if you watched the follow up , the umpire is claiming the law states you should be ready to "receive" the ball within 2 mins, so if your equipment isn't ready by then thats the batters fault.

The thing is - there is room for interpretation here. What if his equipment was ready, and he just tightened the strap and it broke although it was ready? What if it broke after he faced the first ball?

So from now on, batsmen must come in, take guard, take stance - definition of ready to face ball. Then as the bowler is steaming in, back away and tighten the helmet straps.

I get that rules are rules and am ambivalent about the whole thing, but am leaning more towards a bit of grace to the batsman in this particular situation.

Absolutely petty behaviour by Shakib.

Even umpires where absolutely pathetic.

Shakib wouldn't have dared to do this against India due to IPL/T20 money.

Since SL is arch rivals for them, he was selfish.

Matthews was a key player who came at a critical point of the game. It definitely is a game changing moment.

All the posters talking about rules don't understand that this completely kills the fun of the game when players try to abuse such rules which are there for abuse not for legitimate reasons.

Don't know about the fun of the game. But this incident has single-handedly ensured that everyone who didn't care for this game does care now.

It has lit the fire under the SL vs BG rivalry.

People who think this is “out” should just stop watching cricket. Bd has been pathetic and shakib was terrible this series. He just wanted a win at all costs.

Sl should have had balls and won the match and rubbed it in BD players face.

But SL, sucks soo bad now. No self esteem or nothing.

BD, you have stooped as low as our kitty neighbors called pookistan. Smh

Dont think for a moment this is the last time this will happen, Im sure Pakistan and Australia would pull this stunt over India in a final.

Foolish to think that they wouldnt employ this tactic.

Just look at the recent Ashes series.

This rule should be modfied to ensure that batsman is out only if they fail to take ground within 3 minutes.

The rule is fine.

The rule should however allow some objective common sense by the umpire's discretion.

Mathews wasnt deliberately taking his time, it was genuine malfunction of equipment.

Ready to face he was, strap coming off was accidental and not intentional . Umpires and other senior heads in BD team should’ve taken the judgement call. Cricket is not just rules

After the death of Phil Hughes in 2014, the umpires in this game should have used discretion and common sense.

A malfunctioning helmet can lead to death, its not an exaggeration.

Don't give a * about Lankans really, they denied/try to deny SRT a tone on at least 2-4 occasions that I remember, denied Sehwag for sure through Randiv. There was another Mankad incident by Ashwin against Thirimanne in 2012 Oz tri series, the *ing umpires almost forced Sehwag to withdraw the appeal but he shouldn't have :hitler:

Also Ashwin's never Mankad anyone in intl games as far as I know, unlike that chucker Senanayake in 2014/15 so why Is Angelo crying about Mankad so much when he was the cap that time :whack2:

Bcos those incident happened when the game was on..Lankans are not fanboys of srt or sehwag..they can bowl the way they want. Nothing against the spirit of the game.manakading is perfectly legal as batsmen are breaking the laws. This is B's as the game was not on...a helmet strap broke..it would not have been the case if he faced one ball and then the helmet broke.

Then they should shut the * up about spirit of the game BS, btw who bowls deliberate wides or no balls to deny opposition players a landmark? That's actually worse & petty!
