David Johnson, once clocked 157.8 km/h during the Test match against Australia, passed away in Bengaluru at age of 52.

He played two tests for India in 1996.

I'm surprised to find out there was a bowler who clocked 157 kph in 1996. Why was he given only 2 tests??

PS: he had a bustling runup and was quite wayward. Might have thrived in the current era of sport biomechanics

Some guys were just born at the wrong time, 1.5-2 decades later and he could have gotten on the IPL gravy train.

This was back when K'taka seemed to produce most of our seam bowlers.

He never clocked 157.8, was more of a 135-140kph bowler, similar to Agarkar in terms of pace.

But again, our selectors are never known for supporting fast bowlers, they wanted trundlers who can bowl line n length irrespective of how mediocre they are

Very very saddened by this. He and Doddanarasaiah Ganesh were derided endlessly by internet warriors even years and decades after they played for India. They may not have been international class bowlers when they debuted but, with some guidance, may have contributed more than they could.

 

RIP and Om Shanti to you, Mr. Johnson.

RIP. Was so excited to see him when he debuted. Huge Credit for bowling nippy pace day in day out on unhelpful domestic surfaces especially being from Karnataka  condolences to his family.

Must be an error. He wasn't that fast. If he was, we would be over the moon talking and raving about him. Anyway, its sad to see his demise. 52 is way too young to die. Om Shanti David

Peak might be closer to 145+... but the diet , fitness & the number of tests India played overseas was limited in 90s

I don't think he was that quick. 145 is 90 mph. He is more like 135 still decent for 90s standards

Not really. He ran in much faster than he bowled. He was probably more like 130. 

 

Don't know when he was clocked at 157, but that was likely a speed gun error. In those days, these systems weren't that reliable.
