He was hailed as the fastest bowler in India when he made his debut. Might have been a 140'ish bowler. Might have touched 150. Certainly a bowler with potential who was never taken care of by the management.

His pace reminded me of Aaqib Javed's if not more

Went on to tour SA immediately after his debut

Srinath was clear 2 yards quicker than him on naked eyes alone

Srinath at that point in his career was a clear 2 yards quicker than any bowler in the world. Ofcourse people would refute it, but then facts are facts. 

But if handled better, Johnson could have been a good foil to Srinath.

Iirc Klusener at that point and Srinath were out and out fast from both sides

His career actually got over because of Allan Donald. In the 1996 first test in Durban india were blasted out for 66 and around 100 by Allan Donald.  We meekly surrendered and he played in that match. Didnt do anything special and that was it for him. Sprayed around the ball. Incidentally india played much better in the next test with sachin azhar scoring mind boggling centuries in cape town. The partnership was for ages.. there is even a book about it

india lost the test but the next test india should have won. Amazing century by Dravid till rain n cullinan saved them. 
 

Johnson was the one who lost out after the brave series and by the time his radar got straight we already had zaheer khan in 2001 with srinath..

Played 2 Test matches during 96 for Ind  vs Aus one in Ind-del and other vs SA in Durban, do not think speedometers were that common those days and specially in Ind and SA and in Test series. That 157 kmph is supposed to be bowled in in the Del against Aus.

 

Not sure how quick he was but action looked similar to Fidel Edwards (WI intnl). 90s and 2000s Ind did nt find any good quick bowler.  It was v.similar to how its today under current TM.

If IPL and speedometers where not have been there ppl would be saying samething Ind does not have fast bowlers, and there would be some passing reference by some batters here or there that they thought Mayank or Umran or Tyagi were quick.

Apart from that time period under Kolhi Ind has been poor in managing. developing and supporting fast bowlers.

 

Ind cricket always said they wanted fast bowlers with control not sure any of 90s -2000s bowlers could bowl 2 balls at same spot. Aus praised Munaf for his ability to ball consistently in good areas, control only came with Shami, Bhuvi etc and there on. All through out 90s Ind pacers would ball one ball outside off and then other on leg.

A former intl cricketer, or a sportsperson, committing suicide is extremely sad. Hope it wasn't due to financial hardship. Surely we have enough resources to take care of our former cricketers and sportspersons.

That is a small sample. I remember watching him bowl in that Test vs Aus. Early part of his spell was a little sharp but his bowling slowed down considerably after first couple of overs. Anyway, respect to the guy. Very unfortunate that in a situation where cricketers make so much money and live in such opulence that a former international cricketer has either been left out of the space or wasn't provided with the requisite support by BCCI.

Yes,he was quick then for a brief period both he and Srinath were talking points for their pace in that particular series

I remember watching him play in that test match and getting the wicket of Slater. He was hyped as a very quick bowler but sadly never lived up to his potential. I think he was bowling in 130s in that match which was pretty decent pace back then.
