I would take Gambhir's 97 in the WC Final over the 700 runs Kohli accumulated in the ODI WC but when he really needed to put up a score he failed. It was no different than his Perth 100 coming in at 300/2 and scoring that impactless 100. Scoring cheap runs coming in the wake of Rohit taking apart the bowling or when Shami, Bumrah and bowlers had already kept opponent to a lowish total isn't something to be proud of. He had a chance to make the difference in the final and he showed his true colors as usual. It's similar to Kohli's Test runs - couldn't win even a single Away Test but never missed an opportunity to score cheap runs. When someone like Shardul Thakur has more of an impact in Away Test than "King" Kohli, that says it all.

Yes, both Shardul and Kohli have more impact than Gambhir in away tests.

 

Secondly, when I am talking about selection and non selection, you are turning this into a Gambhir vs Kohli fight and that too as a batsman, which is not even debatable.

 

Lets focus on why Gambhir the so called team man and superstar eliminator has failed to make the hard move, also the results after his selection are out there for all of us to see, till now he has completely failed in his duries as a coach, and has shown why he will always be a bootlicker to both the senior folks. Everyone is a gangsta until the real gangsta arrives, your Gambhir has sucked ass and you need to chin up and face the truth.

 

Gambhirs wt20 final knock was saved by a Misbah brainfade, if we are discussing hypotheticals then I can do that too.

Finally, what matters is the legacy you leave, no one will remember Gambhir who was not even the tenth popular player in his team, on the other hand Kohli has reigned supreme as the biggest superstar, he has defeated Gambhir in everything that matters.

I think people are missing the point here. Comparing Kohli to the NRIs on this forum is an inaccurate analogy. Kohli is an active cricketer playing for India, so he should live in the same environment, play domestic matches if required, and bond with the team. Instead, he lives in the UK, never plays any domestic games, doesn't travel with the team, uses a private jet, and is still the first name on the team sheet series after series, despite underperforming for years. This can be uninspiring for many cricketers who toil hard in India. He can surely live anywhere in his personal life but when he plays for India he is a public figure.

It has always been like that. I'm sure we had Gavaskar and Kapil fans earlier. Then we got Tendulkar fans followed by Dhoni fans and now to Kohli and Rohit ones. Maybe in the future we'll have fans of Gill, Jaiswal and other batters.

 

I think that's something in our culture - we always want to have stars around or want to make someone a star. Look at our movies or politicians. It's always about individuals. never about the team or the political party etc. We follow our cricket the same way.

 

I don't see this in western nations. They like their stars - sports or movies - but not to the extent we do. In fact in sports they would rather kick out an underperforming star in an instant. Look at how Tom Brady was let go by New England Pats or Peyton Manning was shipped to Broncos by Colts or the way 49ers traded Joe Montana to Chiefs when he was past it. They don't suffer non-performance at all and in fact kick out stars earlier than they should in most cases.

 

If Indian cricket was run the same way as NFL or other professional sports franchises are run in North America, Kohli would've been let go in 2020 and Rohit wouldn't have anywhere the career he had with the Indian team.

Since I am from that period, I can tell you that the level of fandom was much lower. It really got kickstarted in the SRT era and accelerated from Dhoni onwards
