Looks like PR machinery of other star players has been activated. They are mad that now everyone is raising similar questions about their paymasters, and attacking Ashwin over timing of his retirement, reasons, calling him selfish and what not. So bloody obvious.

Right call by Ashwin and what an amazing player. Along with Jadeja one of the main reasons for our dominance at home. He not only was the main bowler but also scored important runs to save the team. In fact over the last few years he and Jadeja were the ones picking up wkts and scoring runs lower down the order coz of "no show" from our fake kings.

 

I wish selectors jettison other players, especially our senior batters who haven't done anywhere close to what Ashwin did but are still hanging around like a bad smell. They won't have the self awareness to do what they should've done a long time ago but hope BCCI finally sees the light.

Shami ka serious doubt.

His knee issue is still floating around...bowling 10 overs is way different than bowling 20 overs or more in a day.

Usually Kohli and Rohit PR groups are at each others' throats. First time seeing them united and targeting Ashwin for the selfish timing, him not being a team man, finding mistakes in his dressing room speech etc. Clearly some big names have been rattled. This wasn't part of the script.

Ashwin is quite tall, only behind Ishant among Indian cricketers of last 20-25 years I guess. Earlier we had Abey Kuruvilla.

Maybe they're finally seeing the mirror on the wall. If someone like Ashwin who has performed much better than them has retired due to one bad series, the pressure on them will increase given they haven't done anything anywhere close to what Ashwin has.

Wasn't Venkatesh Prasad quite tall as well? I thought he was 6'4". Kuruvilla was useless bowling 120kph thunderbolts.

He hasn't played Test cricket in 18 months and people are expecting him to solve all our issues.   And even then he wasn't anywhere near his best even when he last played.

Wow. That came out of nowhere.

 

His statistics and achievements are there for all to see. But Ashwin's uniqueness is his intense love of the game, which manifested in 2 ways:

 

(1) Zero tolerance for rule-breakers. He is a gentleman's gentleman and will be "nice" but only to an extent. If you crossed a line and started disrespecting the game or taking undue advantage of "sportsman's spirit," you became persona no grata.  He called out chucking more aggressively than any active player I have ever seen, and of course, the non-striker backing up too far. He made a huge contribution to the integrity of the sport.

 

(2) His humility that allowed him to play the game hard against anyone, anytime, anywhere. Even after becoming an international icon, he had no hesitation playing in TNPL and other less glamorous settings. He just wanted to play and keep improving.

 

A savant and straight-shooter.

He saw thw 7 day break and couldn't wait till the MCG test and then knowing he is dropped. He was in the Test squad for all 4 tests. Awkward timing for an Indian legend.

His body is not the same anymore. For someone who is not exactly athletic has managed his career for 13 years. He also played LOI for a while. Then played IPL for 14 years. He also takes part in TNPL . He had great cricketing fitness. Hope Sundar acquires the same attribute. You don't need to have six pack. You just have to have good match fitness.

I read some news that his kit has already been despatched to Aus..and also the medicos are now happy with his knee..unless these are all PR stunts..

MVP of Indian test cricket along with Jadeja , one of ATG test players. The greatest match winner in Indian test history.

 

NZ series showed , home test wins are not as easy as some morons including Ganguly have taken for granted.

 

He will be sorely missed.Very big shoes to fill. I don't understand why people are criticizing him for retiring midway thru the series.

 

His body is not cooperating with him.He looked like shell of himself in last test he played after his injury.His bowling lacked the bite.

Great post. He also looks to solve problems wherever he sees one.

 

He spoke about RTM being unfair to players which led to a final bid rule introduced this year. 

There were some more nuanced problems that he has spoken about in his channel. Some of them were very interesting.
